thanks to the race I got into the Carnegie as all the other lower priced motels were taken. Wheedled my way into a pretty good rate and just walked back across the street from the Gym via the connected skyway. Rooms are magnificent and a welcome relief after this season gave us the small and tight room at Bloomington Ill and an even smaller room at the microtel in Olean NY. It has been a season of travel but this place is special. Owner went broke and bankrupted himself on buying hte antiques that make the place so speciall

Heading for Hooters as the guys have some free tmie and the boy wants some wings.

Oh yeah the carnegie is really nice, plus that means you don't have to drive to the dome.  Have fun.  Shoot me a pm if you have any questions.

I took 9 hours to go from Ashland to Johnson. City.... all the time I have been trekking to Ohio I hear the mantra about being in the middle of Applachia. ....I am not so sure now...
Whoever told you that didn't know his or her geography very well. Athens is on the northern edge of Appalachia. The most northern city in Appalachia, and the biggest, is Pittsburgh. Look it up on the ARC web site.

Tickets will be available. IF you have never seen pictures of our arena, it is pretty odd. We play in a dome which used to contain our football field. . . . Some teams tend to shoot poorly in the dome because your depth preception gets thrown off. Its kind of like playing in an airplane hanger.
I'll bet this did affect our shooting, unfortunately. I've seen this phenomenon before in gyms where there is so much "openness" that your depth perception gets thrown off. When we played in Louisville's Freedom Hall two years ago, I think it was a factor, though we were also kind of overmanned in that game. I'll bet we win this game if it's in the friendly confines of the the Convo.

OCF, you still singing that song about the depth perception in Freedom Hall throwing off our shooting?  For one thing, it's a lot like most arenas and not all that much different in background from the Convo.  Secondly, our opponent had to face the same challenge.  Thirdly, we play in a pretty good sized arena (Convo) without a wall immediately behind the basket.  Now, I'll grant you that the depth perception problem could have negatively impacted our shooting at East Tennessee last night due to the configuration of the facility.

We shot over 40% from three last night. I don't think the shooting background had that much to do with the loss. Now if you are saying that the depth perception was why we missed so many layups and short shots, maybe.  Personally I put the loss down to playing a good team on the road. This was a good team we played last night.

I agree with ya, Van.  This is a team that lost only one home game all year and that was to a great Belmont team.

"Great" Belmont team, Jeff? C'mon.

Maybe 2-3 "great" teams per year. Some say no "great" teams this year. Certainly not Belmont.

You can argue semantics if you'd like but Belmont would have steamrolled the MAC this year.

They only lose one guy, and he only played 19 MPG.  They are going to be very good next year.

"Great" in comparative terms...re:  mid major basketball and the ASun...not talking about the overall landscape of college hoops.

Carl.

the only place a problem in shooting exists is in the minds of guys who ascribe to the theory that they cant shoot well because of the background. A shooters eys are on the rim and rim only. I teach enough of them and talk about different gyms and backgrounds that by the time they have travelled in a typical school season and AAU summer season they understand how to focus on the rim. THe only ones that continue to miss are the mentally weak........

To be honest that gym felt closed in once you put bleachers on 4 sides and filled them up. It felt way more closed in than say the park withthe sky over heaed or FOrd Feild, Lucas Oil, Georgia DOme or  Houston....you know where guys continuously complain and make headlines saying they cant shoot in open places

A more pertinent discussion would be the tightness of the rims in NBA arenas vs the softness in college programs of the fact that certain coaches adjust the rim on the visitors end 2" higher than 10 foot ond only their kids who practice there every day know the secret to consistently hit shots on the shouth end of the gym.

Had this discussion w you  2-3 years ago. I could teach you to shoot in the convo the park or Freedom Hall. You wont change your perspective moving from one to the other.

Dr. Freeman,

Thanks for your insight.  I'm sure you're exactly right about the negligible effect that this type of gym would have on players who are properly trained both mentally and physically.  However, it seems to me that I've noticed this effect on more than one occasion with the 'Cats over the last decade or so.   Perhaps we have too many guys on our team that let this type of "open arena" spoof them.  However, just to contradict myself, I do remember that we beat Syracuse in their "football stadium" field house in the Hunter Era.  So, maybe I'm just looking for an easy excuse.  Say, maybe, I should hire you as my personal shooting coach.  Lord knows that that would be your hardest assignment ever!

Let me end by saying that I'm personally impressed with the way that you've adopted Ohio with a commitment that is more far-reaching the end of your son's stellar basketball career with the university.  That's a real mark of character in my book.  Go OHIO!

I love this place. Sorry I was in Illinois for my undergrad. I told Coach Groce that I would be herre long after he is gone when we met last year. As for shooiing I am up to the task but the hardest part for a guy like you is to forget what all you have learned over the years. Old dogs are the hardest to teach....... or rather unlearn.

Will be intersting to see if OSU continutes to shoot as well as they do inthe arenas thay have been playing in. No way has that background thrown them off.

Well, A&M did not shoot as well as usual -- but maybe the UK defense had more to do with that than the gym!

I am watching teams in Football arenas like Lucas Oil hit many shots from behind the arc.Michigan is shooting very well tonite as did several others in the last week.  I always think of this thread and our conversation at Freedom when I see those teams knocking down 3 balls at an alarming rate in the tourney.
