What a BS story.  "A tournament Ohio's own players don't want to play in."  One player, true, but that's it.

They don't mention today's "Man on the Street" interview in The Post, in which three of four students interviewed said they thought the CIT has been a good investment of their general fees.

They also ignore the fact that some money is recouped.  Let's say 1,500 tickets per game at $10, plus $5,000 in concession profits.  That's $20k per game to date, or $60k of the $108k they say we've wasted. oh, and our players don't have to miss class due to travel.  If we get to the CIT championship, I could see $60,000 in ticket revenue, $30,000 in concession revenue, bringing us far closer to break even.

That "Fast Fact" is shoddy journalism. It does not "cost" $36,000 to host a game. The figure may well be a net cost, but the $36k is up-front and does not factor in ticket or concession revenue.

I agree this story is poor journalism at best. Wait until we see the true numbers after revenue is figured in. Even without any revenue figured in, instill believe it is worth the money. Also, the fact that students subsidize the games are why they GET IN FREE.

A related story from the Messenger/Jason Arkley -

The university says the tournament is worth the cost.

So if you read between the lines, the cost per game thus far is probably more like $10k or less.  That's worth it in my mind.  I have to assume that traveling for the NCAA or NIT would be more expensive.

Definitely an attention article. While it may be correct, the numbers in attendance would show a difference merely between ticket sales and host costs of around -$10K which wouldn't nearly be as attention grabbing.

The net costs of these CIT games are a fraction of the cost what it takes to bring an Alabama A&M to the Convo in December. Plus, if you've decided to budget for it among other priorities, I don't see what the issue is.

Here is the ad Ohio had out for the December 14th game. I'm fairly certain "competitive guarantees" are in the $60K to $100K range these days.

Ohio U. Aaron Fuss 7405973388 fuss@ohio.edu Ohio University is looking to HOST a DIVISION 1 Opponent in a guarantee game on December 14, 2013. Competitive guarantee offered. Call ASAP!! 2013-2014, Guarantee - Offered 2013-07-16 18:35:13

Two things come to mind.  Players didn't want to participate?  2-0 record in the tourney shows that to be false!

Second, for just about all athletics outside of football at the "factory" schools (OSU, AL, etc), EVERY sport is a money loser and needs support.  So under the "shouldn't play because they require a subsidy" argument virtually all intercollegiate athletics, regular season or post season, no matter the school, should be done away with.  If the author wants to be honest and make that point, fine, we can debate on the basis of fact.  But it's the opposite of honest to cherry pick one team at one school in one tournament to attempt to prove....well, I'm not sure what.

Absolutely ridiculous.  The sentence "from the Post Season Opportunity Fund, a fund supplied by student fees, to $180,000 for this post season" is so insanely misleading.  Elsewhere in the article, they do at least acknowledge the idea that the costs are being recouped, but come on.

If we advance and host all the way to the championship, I bet the revenues will exceed costs because I would expect attendance to be quite solid for the semifinal and final.  At a minimum, the vast majority is being recouped.  And that's without mentioning any future benefits reaped (recruiting, experience, etc) or the much debated intangible value athletic success has on a university as a whole.

The posters have done a masterful job of rightfully trashing this shoddy journalism found in Hustle Belt and The Post, so I don't have to add anything.

One would be unwise to write something about Ohio University for a website without fact checking first. Do these people not know that Ohio is home to the best Journalism school in the country? We're gonna pick you apart, so it's safe to back up your arguments with thorough knowledge rather than heresay.

Pet Peeve Disclosure:|

What Hustle Belt does is NOT journalism. It is a blog. It consists of opinion that is sometimes based on a news account. It does not have stories or articles. The next news that Hustle Belt breaks will be its first.

We will sound much brighter if we accept this as fact and move forward as such.

I'm not a big fan of the CBI or the CIT.  It's sort of like MLB holding a tournament for teams that didn't make the playoffs at the same time the World Series is going on.  The fan interest is elsewhere.  But if there's a benefit for the players, without costing too much money, then it's worthwhile.  The players who we'll rely on next year are getting some PT vs pretty good teams so there's benefit.

Does anyone know how the PSOF works?  For example, if that money isn't used, does it carry over to next year, is it used for something else in athletics, or used for something else university wide?

Also, if we go the distance in the tournament and spend $180k from the PSOF but collect $180k in revenue, does that revenue go back into the PSOF, or does it go to the athletic department?

For the record, it doesn't matter all that much to me....it's always interesting to me when bolgs/articles are written about an organization the size of Ohio University "misspending" $180,000.  The university had $593,924,131 in operating expenses in 2012.  If we're truly worried about 0.03% of the university operating budget, we probably don't need to be discussing the financial feasibility of having post-season athletics...we need to be discussing the feasibility of continuing to have a University.

I almost started a thread on how big of a joke The Post is yesterday but I decided to wait and see how long it would take for the issue to be brought up.

The ridiculous here is so extensive I'm overwhelmed by the number of topics that are rant worthy.

Don't know if anyone else noticed but that Hustle Belt piece is gone now.  But yeah why would The Post try to do any level of real research like the Athens Messenger does?  I mean who wants to be a real journalist anyway nowadays.  We all have seen the crap going on in the news with the Malaysia Airline thing, people just want what most creates views and controversy.

Interesting quote from today's Post.  I wonder if the Post or the other two papers in town will persue this.

Ohio Athletics has pulled $36,000 from the Post Season Opportunity Fund for each of the first two games the Bobcats hosted and will pay the same amount for Wednesday’s contest.

That figure is the cost before game revenues such as advertising and ticket sales, though an average of slightly fewer than 3,400 people have attended the first two games. Athletics did not return a request by The Post for revenue earned from the games.

Money WELL spent, especially if we make it to the Semis/
Finals.
$180K spent (before revenues are counted in) to be on a National Sports Network and have the results reported nationwide is easily worth it.

It costs the Football team about that same amount to go to ONE MAC away Football game....

I would assume that a win today would mean significantly higher attendance and revenue for the next game (this wkd?)

I am hopeful tonight's attendance jumps but I could see it being ballpark of our last two games. However, make it to the next round and I think we get ticket revenue high enough to pay for any minor loses we have had so far in this tournament.. The finals would undoubtedly pull some solid ticket revenue. I have no clue what we could expect from concessions or advertising. Gotta love that those are nationally televised games though...

This is easy for a finance guy; the answer as to why is that people worry about what they can comprehend.  The average guy, and almost certainly, the average internet blogger can't relate to 9 digit numbers - it isn't relevant in their world.  $36K a game, that's some real money.  You could buy a nice car with that.  In Athens, you can probably pick up a couple of rental properties.  Hence, why would you "throw that away"?

Full disclosure, It's not so much that I'm not a fan of the CIT.  I'm not a fan of putting on airs about it.  It's a profit motivated, made for cable TV event that happens to attract D1 clubs for their own good reasons.  Nothing more.

Now, if Jim Schauss, Jim Christian et al had a contract incentive kick in for winning it like the $18K A&M's Gene Smith got for a wrestler winning a third national championship, then I'm going to question the motives.

According to Smith's contract, he gets a nice monthly financial allotment for two cars.

No offense guys but I think you all know I am not that enamored with the 3rd and 4th tournaments.  My only comment would be that about 50% of the fan base isn't enamored with it either and has NOT shown up.  We did lose one player and perhaps some others haven't been up to snuff because of injury or desire not to participate (although not quitters).  The best good news is the tourney doesn't cost much money and the young guys, bean, setty and campbell especially, are getting some good PT.
