I think Shaka just goes into each offseason hoping to get 3-4 offers each year to boost his confidence and boost VCU's appreciation for him.

And boost his reputation for an elite job when someone like Boeheim or Coach K retire.
Except Boeheim has already named his replacement, and I am pretty sure Coach K will be afforded the same opportunity.

The only real precedents I can think of are Bill Guthridge and Gene Bartow. Guthridge didn't stay long enough to judge whether he would've been a long-term success. Two Final Fours are great, but he also was handed Antawn Jamison, Ed Cota and Vince Carter to start off with. Considering he was handed a juggernaut, I'm not sure I'd call Bartow a success.

Oh, and poor Mike Davis. But those were wacky circumstances.

Those Guthridge teams can be compared to the Fab Five in their collective talent with no NCAA title. And then there was Matt Doherty. And then there was Brandon Hunter making Matt Doherty angry. And then there was Brad Daugherty speaking greatly of Brandon Hunter making Matt Doherty angry.

Just throwing out names here, but does anyone think Archie Miller will be back at Dayton next year?  I hope he is, but if Dayton's experience is anything like Ohio's circa 2012, then we all know what the answer is.  I could see Miller having his choice among the available openings.

I think it is easier to understand Miller passing up everything other than Marquette if you look at JC's experience at TCU.  He took a job in a league with multiple bids for more money, but it was a dead end job.  There is a reason some of these jobs become available.  Archie Miller is young.  He has a good thing going and if he is patient and continues tio be successful, though not necessarily to this extent, a good job will become available.  Shaka Smart can afford to be selective because he is well paid, has a great program going, and whatever he is looking for will eventually happen.  Just chasing a higher level league or more money doesn't always help your career.

Does Dayton have a shot at getting into the Big East? They seem to be a prime candidate. Catholic, basketball-crazy, premier facility. If they do, I could see Miller staying there.
