I can't believe this is the best job he can get. I understand that it's big East, but the Big East is not what it used to be to me.

Buzz was pushing 4M according to some sources with his perks. Shaka is a native of Wisconsin so that may have something to do with the decision.

Interesting development, Bornacatfan.

The winning percentage as a head coach isn't eye popping, but  Tod Kowalcyzk would be a strong candidate at Marquette in my opinion. He is a former assistant there and at Rutgers, was reasonably successful at UW-GB and  has proven he could build a winner from the bottom up at Toledo.

Keep in mind, Smart is from Madison, which could make this a tantalizing opportunity for him, particularly since the Wisconsin job probably isn't going anywhere soon.

Also saw the rumours of Chris Mack to Wake

WOnder if Mack goes if there is any consideration to pluck Whitford from BSU to come back to the program. I would not think his record at Balls would be a particular negative given what he started with.

He has turned down UCLA, Illinois and a few other high profile jobs in the past. Illini fans are happy with the choice for the most part. There are still a few that think Groce is all fluff.

WOrd now is that Shaka turned down a very good offer . Milwaukee Television already announced the move....ooops . Looks like Joe McKinley has better sources than local reporters LOL. TIme will tell.

Tad Gordon said:
I talked to Shaka a couple of hours ago and there is no truth to the rumors… They did offer a very nice package but he said he is trying to build this thing in Virginia… So don't worry, our recruits are coming and Shaka is staying!!! Get over it!!!!

I'm a family member of J.Tillman… I communicate with the coaching staff frequently… Today alone I have talked to two of his assistants and Shaka.

Somehow I can't see Mack leaving now that Xavier is in the Big East. Having to deal with Cuse, Duke, UNC, Virginia, NCSt, Pitt and others may not be that appealing. I know there are some who might say "don't let the door hit you" since they aren't fans of his, but he's a Cincinnati guy through and through. And really, how is Wake that much more attractive anymore than Xavier?

Majerus had a good line for the reasons on why he went to St. Louis and never left: "don't go to a place for the money, go to a place you can win."

I'd consider Wake more attractive because of two things:  ACC and $$$$$$$$

Mo $$$$ long term "winning" than short timer elsewhere if you are Shaka (or any other similiar candidate). Plus - the long term Life and Legacy gratification - Shaka has 20 year career window of achievment opportunites - and window of Right decision making opportunities. He's playing this as good as anyone far as I can see.

The only way I see Shaka departing VCU is if its one of those years that the cupboard is bare. That is usually the pattern. Hold out until its going to hurt you. I didn't know the Shaka situation so I thought it Marquette could be possible if he had to rebuild at VCU. Its the only reason to make a move like Marquette.

I'm in Detroit with client. Rumor here is Izzo to Pistons. If that happens. Look for run at Shaka by MSU. That is a move I see him making.

When it comes to Izzo, I'll believe that kind of rumor when I see it.   That said, Shaka comes across as a very smart guy.  By my estimation, he's not leaving VCU unless it is to go to a very high level school:  Some place like MSU, Indiana, Kentucky or the like.  He has VCU at a spot where they're as good or better than more than half of the "power conference" schools.  Why go to one of them to have to take a step back for 3 years?  He's already making very good money at VCU as well.

Detroit management would have to give Izzo a TON to entice him to leave.  Look at the record, look at the roster and of course, look at the city.  The deck is stacked against the coach whoever he is.  And would someone like Izzo, really want to deal with today's professional athlete after being in complete control on the collegiate level?  Just don't see it.

And by the way, TOS to USF, now that their prospective hire kinda/sorta fibbed on his resume...

Mack is a leaf on the Skip Prosser tree, which explains everything in regards to Wake Forest.

I don't think Shaka or Izzo either one move personally. Jobs are not a lot greater than what they have and present problems for both that they do not need.

What's the saying about two moguls talking and one telling the other that the difference between them is that he recognizes/understands the concept of 'enough.'

I think..hope...a guy like Izzo recognizes when he's hit the ideal.  And stays.

I think Shaka just goes into each offseason hoping to get 3-4 offers each year to boost his confidence and boost VCU's appreciation for him.

And boost his reputation for an elite job when someone like Boeheim or Coach K retire.
