I'm thinking we could give Saul Phillips a look. Here in Fargo it has been thought that he would leave after this year for awhile as he is graduating 6 seniors and the whole core of a team that won its first NCAA tournament game this year.

He is young and energetic. He comes from Bo Ryan's coaching tree.

deadspin.com/north-dakota-state-upsets-oklahoma-in-ot-thanks-to-bonk-1548523607

edit: he is currently the head coach at NDSU and also interviewed at Ball State last year

Not to be a dick, but are you somehow related or associated to Coach Phillips? It just seems odd that a brand new poster out of nowhere brings up a name I hadnt heard anywhere else connected to the job. I do think he is a really good coach though and was impressed with the NDSU program in the tournament

Have to agree that it does seem fishy, but I am in no way associated with the guy. I've been reading the site awhile, just never created account until a few weeks ago.

I kind of thought everyone was putting there own names out there. I figured I would throw a name of a coach out there that I have been able to watch for the past few years.

I said this elsewhere in relation to the BG job:  Whoever we hire (lots of good names have been mentioned) should have strong hoops ties in Ohio.  Over the next few years there will be a slew of talented players coming through the high school ranks and there's no reason we shouldn't get our share.  I believe Stevie is now the only OH player on next year's roster.

This is why I want to see Boals considered.  He knows this state (believe it or not, he was in Upper Arlington recently taking a peak at a talented 8th grader).  My guess is that he connects well with Sonny Johnson  in Cleveland, the former Bobcat who is becoming somewhat of a godfather in the basketball community up there.

But whether its Boals or someone else, we need someone who can recruit this state.

The same guy that gave us the Laferla twins and recruited several head cases that help lead to Larry Hunters downfall? NO THANKS!

Before people start correcting my spelling I could care less if I spelled the twins name incorrectly!

Here is a question and perhaps it's been ask so I apologize if it has. Would Geno Ford be interested in a lateral move from Bradley to Ohio? Money is probably better at Bradley but opportunity to win is better at Ohio in my humble opinion. I know Geno would not be a lifer but I firmly believe he would stay longer than Christian. It would generate a ton of excitement locally and would be a winner at the gate and for the OBC?

Thoughts?

What about Gary Waters? He has built a conistent winner at CSU, had success at Kent and is probably old enough to not chase another job at a big school ala Solich. I dont know if he would want to come here or not, but he is a proven winner in the state with good recruiting ties in NE ohio

Pat Kelsey from Winthrop should be 1a.
Rick Byrd from Belmont should be 1b

My thought is stay away from Geno.  First, he ain't exactly setting the world on fire at Bradley. Second, moving from the Missouri Valley to the MAC is not lateral, its backward.  Third, the way he bailed out of Kent sucked big time.  I read elsewhere on this board he still hasn't paid his buyout.

All valid points. I will disagree with one thing you mentioned. I disagree that leaving an MVC also ran to what has to be considered the MAC's #1 job is a step back?

Unfortunately, I believe that is how outsiders/the national basketball media would look at it.  The MAC is slowly trending down, and is now almost a permanent 1 bid league.  What's the old real estate saying?  You wanna buy a lesser house in a great neighborhood, not the best house in a poor neighborhood....

I have to imagine Rick Byrd has been approached for several jobs in recent years and he still seems content staying put. Older guy, too.

I have to imagine that Jans from Wichita St. would have been our next coach if he was still available.

Now we probably go for one of the Michigan or Ohio State assistants. I think Boals is the obvious choice and it probably would be our last chance to get him if he's interested in coming, since I'm sure he'll be a head coach somewhere very soon.  But I just wonder why Boals would be a legitimate candidate for Schaus now if he wasn't a candidate 2 years ago?

Byrd is up around 800,000 in salary at the private school. That is about the ceiling as to what we could try politically at OU. The MAC wants to improve basketball though.

I'm neutral on Boals. Not enough experience? What was surprising to me is that he has as many years of DI coaching experience as Groce did coming into Athens. And he comes from the Matta tree, which seemed to work out well for us last time.
