Saw this on CBS Sports' Rapid Reports:

"Two Buckeyes assistants reportedly are potential candidates for in-state HC vacancies: Jeff Boals at his alma mater, Ohio University, and Dave Dickerson at Miami University. Dickerson was Tulane's HC before joining coach Thad Matta's Ohio State staff. Boals has expressed interest in the Ohio job."

Do we know how express the interest was?

Re: Trent - Assistants need to start somewhere - so why not here. Prior to being a college assistant they can cut their teeth on the HS circuit - like at say, Jackson, Ohio or Schlage High School in Kansas City. Or they can gain knowledge playing in the NBA.
I gotta think the ONLY reason Trent would be interested is to work with Boals and at OHIO. I doubt seriously that Gary is looking at venturing into a long term NCAA coaching career path. A few years alongside helping his former teamate - then back to the "real" world of "retired" NBA player.

Quotes from Boals - Ohio State Scout:

“Any time your alma mater pops up, it will definitely be interesting,” Boals said shortly after Ohio State’s practice. “It’s humbling (to be considered). I think my focus is helping Thad Matta and Ohio State to win a national championship. This weekend I’ll be worried about Ohio State and hopefully we’ll be cutting the nets down Monday. Then we’ll go from there.”

“You don’t work for Thad, you work with him,” Boals said. “He gives you a lot of empowerment and responsibility and helps you prepare for that situation. There is no better guy in the business – he has no ego at all. He cares about everyone getting the job done. He’s been great, obviously with his coaching tree in the short time he’s been a head coach is pretty phenomenal.

“He wants guys to who want to be head coaches and his track record with his past assistants, guys have moved on and the ship still sails. There is one common denominator in this program, and that’s Coach Matta.”

“My goal is to be a head coach someday and if that happens this year, great, and if it doesn’t, I am still working for a great guy at a great institution,” he said. “It would have to be a special situation to get me to leave Ohio State.”

A little surprised at all the Dustin Ford love on the board.  If you go to the chat room on just about any gameday there's almost always lengthy discussion and criticism of Ford's work with our big guys.  Quite frankly I'm not qualified either way to say what kind of coach he is, but just found it a little strange how quickly people's opinions of him have changed around here.

Have you looked at or voted in the New Coach Poll on here? Right now Boals #1 w/56 votes, Pitino Jr #2 w/9 votes, Dustin #3 w/9 votes. I think a lot of us "love" him - just is he the best top pick for the top job right now?

With how well Ivo and Reggie played during our March run, it would be foolish not to recognize what Dustin has done for our bigs.

I have been "watching" all throughout GroceWatch (thanks for keeping us all updated!) and now I'll jump in...

One Dustin Ford - I have nothing against Dustin and really hope that he is kept on the coaching staff (in fact I think it is important that he is), but I really hope they bring in someone.  I have all the faith that Schaus will hire the best coach for the job, be it Boals or someone else.  So far he has a great record for doing just that.

On the idea of Boals and Trent - As much as I loved watching Trent as a Bobcat, I don't know about him as a coach. Also, I think I remember reading around the time that his number was retired that he and Boals did not get along too well as players...

Actually I think Trent gave nothing but praise to Boals for pushing him hard in practice. I think Trent said he might have not liked it too much at the time, as part of his maturation, but I'd say they are good friends to this day.

Look who the first tweet came from.

If Boals is the guy we'll have a new coach by Tuesday at 1:00 now that OSU has lost.  Negotiations will begin tomorrow in NO in earnest if he is the leading candidate.

Boals is not as qualified as Groce was four years ago. Groce was the assistant head coach and had been at tOSU 6 years, Lots of tournament experience at Xavier and tOSU, plus he had time at North Carolina State and Butler .Groce was part of much higher profile staffs and programs. Groce was recruiting at a much higher level for a longer  period of time than Boals has.
We need to be sure we get someone that will take us to a higher level, not just maintain where we are now (Schaus' words)

He's 70 years old but has said he wants to be back into college coaching...what about Larry Brown? I know he discussed wanting the SMU job.

(I'm not advocating for this... This thread is just getting stale and the coach at my current institution sen me pictures of himself with Brown last night so it got me thinking.)

OK, so, looks like I was completely wrong and the people who said Schaus will go outside the box were right.
