Many threads have already been started, but we are trying to consolidate discussion as much as possible under one thread.

And, will Schaus have a hire by the time the Final Four is over?

Criteria for selecting a coach:

Long term: Hire a coach who will build a program where future head coaches can be developed from within the staff. Look to Butler and Xavier as examples of this. Set a goal of continuity in the program when future coaching changes happen.

Short term: Hire a coach who can stop the bleeding--either retain the recruits signed by the Christian staff, or else have the recruiting resources to bring in several good players of his own who will be eligible next season.

Other thoughts:

* Hire a coach who will put together a staff which can be very strong in recruiting the state of Ohio and surrounding states.
* Emphasize making immediate connection with current players.
* Emphasize integrity; someone who will not get Ohio in trouble with the NCAA.
* Hire a coach who will have a strong personal relationship with his players.

Based on my 10 minute conversation with Schaus in Cleveland last year, I can tell you he was very much in favor of hiring a guy who has previous coaching experience when he talked of the JC hire.   He was very proud of the fact we could hire a guy like that.  I'd be willing to be the looks that direction first.

That said, I have no idea which way he will go.  I just know that I trust him wholeheartedly.

I agree with the many who think that Schaus can be trusted to bring in a fine potential hire.  Just don't jump all over Schaus if it doesn't work out.  We can ask that he hires well.  We cannot ask that he guarantee the results.

A sound list there Jeff. I would also add to that a strong fundamentals coach. Someone who understands the latest trends in the game. A coach for 2014 and not 1984.

Process over results. Sometimes, that can be hard to shake out.

To Mark's question, I would be shocked if a new coach is not introduced to the Ohio University community by next Thursday night, 1 week after the job opened.   I do not think it is mandatory that we set up a program where we hire from within, although that's usually a plus when u do.  I always believe that the athletic director should undertake due diligence, and find the best available candidate wherever he may be.

To reiterate what I said on one of the other threads. The last two hires were great moves, we expanded our presence in that the last two coaches went to the Big 10 and the ACC. However, now is the time for continuity. I would suggest an alum whose heart is with the program. Dustin Ford appeals to me because he has been a head coach at the high school level, in addition to being a Division I college assistant. Having been an assistant coach and a head coach at the high school level myself, there's nothing like being the captain of the ship however small, rather than just watching the action an arms length away.

I would rather we have someone like Ford or even Boals build up the program and leave after several seasons than a flashy hire come in and it is 2 or 3 seasons and done. We have some cache after the last two coaches went to premier conferences. Imagine how Kent State must feel after Geno goes to Bradley and is literally in limbo. Talk about a lateral move. Let's get an alum with experience and passion who will stay a little while and continue what Coach Groce and Coach Christian started.

Based on our track record with coaching searches the next guy is going to be great (Nee, Groce), good (Hunter, TOS) or somewhere in between (Christian). I'm sure the administration is going to use the hiring as an opportunity to generate positive publicity program and announce another boost in budget with a new coach. The time to lower expectations if they were going to do it was when TOS left for Bryant. After a decade of basketball where we watched Kent State pass us by and the MAC slide down the conference pecking order.

I like Boals as a person, and he'd surely be passionate.   However, I have two major concerns:

At OSU, he's primarily responsible for the post players.

1)  OSU has had a hell of a time recruiting big men in the last few years.  I'd assume he's responsible for this endeavor, or at least has a large hand in it.  Why is he struggling to land them when they've shown success in sending big guys (Koufus, Mullins, Sullinger, Thomas) to the league?  I'm asking, because I don't know he answer.  But that is mildly concerning.

2)  Developing big men.  In the last three seasons under his tutelage, I've watched a 5* McDonalds All-American develop into a bigger flop than Mighty Wings.  This is more than mildly concerning, IMO.

So Schaus' last 4BBall hires have been: Turgeon, Marshall, Groce and Christian. I think the guy knows what he's doing. I'm betting he's also been quietly studying the landscape in case the very situation we find ourselves in would arise unexpectedly. I trust in Schaus.

Groce - applause
Christian - in the end booo

The coaches we've had in here I would describe as solid recruiters and good tactical coaches. What I would like to see is a coach with a strategy for the program on both sides of the floor and recruit excellent talent to fit that strategy. I  here a lot of assistant names thrown about here but rarely on coaching merits. A young assistant from a top program would like Groce stick around 4-5 years even if he made the tourney once or twice. We didn't pay JC enough to keep him from going to BC. What I see programs doing at the high mid major level is starting the young assistant out at 500-600k and once they prove they can win an NCAA game pushing the salary up closer to 1 million. OU has not had anyone walk in and perform to the level were they deserve a million dollar salary like Shaka or Greg Marshall. Hiring within is great so long as you can afford to pay for great assistant coaches. This next hire might be more about who they can get on the bench than the coach himself.

TOS and JC boos?  Are you kidding me.  Both had very good records at OHIO.  If you don't like the personality or the way they left that is one thing but both moved as ahead or kept us above water.

Now Bandy and Hahn...both nice guys.  Just didn't move the program but had a really tuff act to follow.

I remember all the threads like this two years ago when Groce left. I don't think Jim Christian's name was mentioned once prior to him becoming the guy. I predict whoever gets the job this time will again come out of left field.

If you think Schaus might pull another left fielder, consider:
* JC had success in midwest and was middling in another geographical region
* JC was hired by one AD at TCU who was then replaced.

Now the circumstances have changed and there is not the necessity for HC experience there was to keep DJ and crew in town following the Sweet 16 run...

BUT...

I think the above JC scenario applies to Brian Gregory. Former UD coach with now former X AD. Oil and water. He'd be my left field guess.

JS came out of OSU-Xavier endless coaching tree. That was a big perk for bringing him to Athens. If he has Dustin as the #1 guy on his bench in Illinois that says to me that in his opinion he is an A list assistant. A guy worthy of the coaching tree. I say he's worth at least considering on those merits alone. Give him a nice budget for assistants and try to load the bench with guys in the coaching family. You don't have to pay Illinois a buyout for him. Dustin's salary is 155,000 over at Illinois.

I like it. Definitely had his best success at the high mid major level and is over his head at Georgia Tech. The only problem is he's got 4 more years left on his contract and he's over 1 million per year. If he was closer to the end of his contract I'd say we could get within striking distance. He's got a 4 star PG signed for next year in the wings that he can bring over.  A 20% cut on his base salary like JC absorbed puts him at 800,000. OU could write him an 8 year contract to give him more security. Make a big statement hire to keep the recruits on board.

The Great DJ Cooper says bring Dustin back to Athens.  DJ's a leader and knows a little about building a championship-level team and program.  I like Boals as well-8 years as an assistant... he's ready.  Nice to have two former players as Big 10 top assistants.  Both would be relentless winners IMO, given their knowledge and passion.

Go Cats.

  2. I read the news.. Congrats coach christian... bring back !!
