According to Chas Wolf @highmajorscoop on twitter:

I thought Shauss was known for making good hires on his own, not sure why he would feel the need to go with a search firm this time around.

To make the search more broad. Too many candidates are interested. This school is on the move.

Those guys are vetting the candidates and he needs them. There are not that many DI jobs and the phones will be ringing off the hook.

This shocking to me. It goes against everything Schaus has ever said.

I don't get it.

BINgO on this, he is on the record more than once stating that hiring is his job and he will do it.

Unfortunately, the search firm is using this chart to narrow down the search:

There's only 24 hours in a day .. JS can only do so much.  He can't handle the search himself ... and if he wants the best candidates he needs help as time is of the essence.  In the end he will make the decision.  If a CEO leaves the Chairman of the Board doesn't make a decision by himself .. a head hunter will find the best possible candidates and they go from there.  I imagine JS wants to name a guy within a week and maximizing the group of candidates he looks at is important (and I suspect he was also caught off guard by BC's moving so fast on JC).

Jerry, you are missing the point, JS HAS never used a search committee, he's done every hire to date on his own. That makes some wonder why now?

I'm not even saying that it is good or bad... Just weird...

Look at how Jason Arkley just started a recent article on the coaching search.....

http://www.athensohiotoday.com/sports/ohiouniversity/who-...

Quote:expand_more
Jim Schaus, Ohio’s Director of Athletics, takes special pride in one aspect of his job.

In a day and age when more and more ADs turn over coaching searches to expensive search firms, Schaus prefers to handle all potential coaching hires with a personal touch.

“I’m an AD, it’s what I’m supposed to do,” Schaus said in 2012.
But apparently we are hiring an expensive search firm?

Something does not add up. I could find 100 more Schaus quotes on hiring his own coaches and with his track record I don't think many would question him on that.

Maybe the report that he is using a search firm is just another rumor.  We've had our share of those.

Plain and simple, one word...DUMB!

Any AD worth his weight in salt has a list of 4/5 candidates in his top drawer.  Go open the drawer and figure out who is best.  The whole search firm thing just takes too much time lets you blame someone else if it doesn't work out.  I know it is the in thing to do but I am old fashioned.  Arkley is right and so was JS in 2012...it's his job to hire a coach.  And, he has done fine without a search firm in the past, I guess.

Hell, there have been enough good ideas for a new coach on BA.  Tell him to come here if he doesn't have his own list!

For those questioning the use of a outside firm, you need to think about the potential relationships that these firms have with agents and agency firms.  This only open us up to more options and makes us a more legitimate candidate for those options.

Could he be using it as a front to exclude the Boals and Fords from consideration?

Perhaps McDavis is feeling more than a bit burned by JS's last hire and wants a different approach this time.

Also in this age where it's impossible to keep something quiet, confidential and a secret, a coach working through his agent can express interest in a job without ever having to contact the AD or institution.  The search firm serves as the intermediary and narrows down the field.  If a coach doesn't make that cut, only he knows that he expressed interest in the job and can continue coaching his team without a fan base criticizing him.

Maybe I'm naive ... but I truly think JS was totally caught off guard. This happened fast. The first few candidates either withdrew or were otherwise eliminated. Up pops JC .. he's off to talk to BC. Boom, he's gone. I think he did intend to stay in Athens a while. But looking at $$$ and ACC versus MAC ... it was too much to pass up. How can JS quickly find the best fit almost immediately. Clearly he doesn't want this to drag out too long.

This isn't a search committee. A search committee is when you have a player rep,
a faculty rep., etc. I had thought we used Parker to find Christian.

Nothing to see here.

Right you are Mike.  I was on the search committee for AD when McDavis hired Schaus.  There were about 10 to 12 folks on that committee.  We reviewed resumes and conducted interviews and gave top names to McDavis and he made the choice.  It was a very interesting and informative process - eye opening would be a good description.

My guess is he is using the firm to cull through and verify background info. On the heels of the recent hires where resumes got torn apart and errors exposed he is smart to let an outside firm do the legwork and verifications so that he can focus on the interview process and listen intently to their answers and b vision

Using a search firm is part of playing the game. Schools and ADs that don't use a firm get blacklisted in coaching circles. So if JS was ever thinking of leaving a search firm would never help him out. These firms are in bed with agents and can influence them. It's like the mob...better to pay up...

I'm still with JSF, this is a move from the Schaus M.O., not saying its wrong or not an industry standard, I am saying Schaus has taken pride in being the beginning and end in these decisions, the change is intriguing.

Ummm, no. The thing is, Schaus has used firms to hire Christian, to hire Groce, to hire Gregg Marshall. He uses his words carefully. He says he doesn't use search committees.
