Best ambassador of MAC hoops since Charlie Coles? I could see that being the case.

I was just thinking about Charlie in that regard. Charlie used to have some great one-liners, and he definitely had enthusiasm and energy.

Saul sure seems as likable as Coles was.

1. I actually felt bad for JC at his presser. Was the video from an official BC website, or a fan site? The 50 minute into of nothingness was bush league. I hope it was a fan site. The into from Bates lacked any emotion and the entire presser from Christian lacked all emotion. Also, the camera angle on the BC logo sheet in the background was horrendous. High school's do better.

2. After watching Russ' interview, I think we this hire may have kept Russ around for a couple extra years as well. I think these two are going to have a few good years of entertaining banter between the two of them.

First interview with Russ - http://youtu.be/YaijPbd59bU

It is indeed "an exciting time to be a Bobcat"!

Very nice interview.  Despite Saul's comment at the end, I thought the bar was set pretty high -- but they can go higher, I'm sure.  I think Russell and Saul are going to have some good moments together.  Once they build a little rapport and get to know each other better I can see the kind of banter between the two that we heard on the Minnesota station interview posted elsewhere on this site.  Great job.  I'm pumped!!!  Go OHIO!

This guy is gonna be a lot of fun...and I think very successful.

My only request:  I don't really care to see one more post with the initials JC in it.  The guy is gone folks.  His two years are now in the books and they were what they were.  Give it a rest and get over it.  We've got a bright future to look forward to, I think!

I had much the same reaction.  I think it was actually BC's production.  They have 50 minutes of techies talking about lighting and audio and less than 30 minutes of presser.  And after all that, the lighting sucked.  At least they had a mic for the press so we could hear the questions (Ohio, please note that for your next presser).  But the press conferences about Flight 370 have been cheerier.  I guess they have to show that they're "all business" for the Boston media.

As for Phillips, he's a lot like Groce.  I think he'll connect with the players a lot better than Christian did.

Funny you mentioning keeping Russ..  Many have deemed Ohio Basketball destined to be a "stepping stone" for eternity. I'm not buying it. There is a reason people who are great at their jobs are sticking around Athens... On this board, I've seen it mentioned that Schaus, Russ, Frank and Arkley are all destined for brighter lights than Athens, Ohio. Maybe, just maybe, they all are buying into the growth Ohio Athletics is experiencing. Yes, they all must have an appreciation for their life right now but I also think they may all have bought into the vision for what Ohio could be.

Obviously, Phillips saying all the right things doesn't necessarily translate into him doing all the right things. If he does though, man, this school and community has all the other keys lined up... Starting at the top with McDavis. If we can get the stability in men's hoops. Woo buddy.

It's apparent Saul is also very impressed with Russ, who was excellent in this interview.

As to whether Russ and Arkley might be intentionally sticking around because they believe Ohio is on to bigger and better things…that's just not realistic.  Even if Ohio somehow became a nationally known program, the owners of the Athens Mess would still pay slave wages. Small-town journalism isn't a wise career path unless you own the paper. Same for Russ - he really needs to get to a bigger stage and I'm sure it's driving him nuts that he hasn't broken through yet.

I agree with that sentiment. I hope the Department is looking at the body of work and upgrading the pay as he builds our brand and exposure way past what it was when he got here. Looking at the year in review on video posted on here and the interview with Saul I think we should be making sure he is well compensated in hopes of keeping him around a bit longer. Gonna be hard to replace. Maybe he can get a bonus per # of hits/views.

Per The Dispatch Website:
"I won’t be that guy who hides in his office. I want to get to know the students, the kids who are cheering in the stands. I want this to be long-term.”

SP won me over with that statement, right there.

Does anybody know why we didn't have Saul on the short list two years ago?

This hire says a lot to me about the state of Ohio Basketball. I think it is clear Ohio is the best job in the MAC. Our facilities, and fan base are second to none in the conference. I think we have graduated to the level that we will only lose Phillips to a power conference program. Even Kentucky and Kansas have lost their coaches to other jobs. Thinking Phillips will have a Jim Snyder type tenure is a little far fetched. There are probably a handful of power conference teams that can't poach Coach Philips from Athens. Think about this 7 years ago, TOS left us for Bryant. The growth of our program is remarkable right now. Coach Philips might be wildly successful and there are not any good power conference positions available. We could keep him for awhile. Coach Philips isn't leaving us for Northwestern or Rutgers.

I appreciate LDB defense of the previous coaching regime. Everybody keeps saying who wouldn't turn down triple your salary money. I can think of a few and their current jobs have since rewarded them. Shaka Smart, and Mark Few come to mind instantly. Both are making bank now but worked up to their salaries by having sustained success in their programs. Smart turned down UCLA. I also find it interesting Schaus tried his best to keep Groce before he left for Champaign, did we make any offer to keep our previous coach? The cost of living in Boston is outrageous and the traffic is horrible. Are the quality of life headaches worth the money? I guess so, I have never been offered triple my salary so I don't know.

I appreciate two things the previous coach did for Ohio. One the green turtle neck in tribute to Charlie Coles was nothing but a class act. It showed more love and honor to Coles then the man who sits in CC's office today. The second thing is the Regular Season Co-Championship. I know it was a "backdoor" championship but only us on BA will remember that fact in 10 years.

It will be interesting to see if Coach Phillips can rerecruit Owens back to Ohio. If the attempt is unsuccessful it might be a blessing. Coach Philips will have 3 scholarships to find guys he knows will fit into his system. He has a good returning foundation if there are no more defections and 3 building blocks for the future. I think Coach Phillips is coming into a great situation.

I'm not sure 2 years ago he was on anyone's list. At that time he was just so-so IMO.

I wonder what way ticket prices are going to go and how the people will feel about that.

Well, maybe not a Jim Snyder type tenure, but at his meet-and-greet last night I asked him specifically about his statements about being here until his 4th grade daughter graduated from high school.  He looked me right in the eye and said he meant every word he had said.  He specifically said, "Just watch me.  I'm not going anywhere. I'm in this for the long haul."  Though we've had previous coaches hint around at having some type of longevity here, like JC's allusions to Smart at VCU, none of them have ever make such specific statements.  I think we've got ourselves a different kind of cat here! oh i'm sure ticket prices will go down in price .... my guess is that like the CIT tournament tickets they will just be a flat rate of $10 per game .... the athletic department will recoup the money to pay saul by popcorn sales .... BANG !! .. oh baby what a big time popcorn sale !!

keep in mind that large, extended buyout clause is a two way street. If things don't work out like we hoped in a couple of year we'll be on the hook for $950K if we want to change directions. probability of that is low, as was JC leaving after 2yrs.

Saul Phillips may have already connected to the players better than JC. Dare I say the whole "twitter fiasco" makes even more sense after seeing his press conference what a smack in the face to Ohio. Or maybe someone else wrote JC's introduction speech..wait a minute that may even be JC's stunt double doing the presser! I doubt the guy even talked to his players on his way out there door..I will ask around to my sources.
