.4 - don't you hate it when facts get in the way.  By the way, hockey is only a club sport so it has already been "dropped."  And given the current results, I'm not sure we can honestly say Ohio plays baseball.

I was there sitting at the scorer's table as the floor engineer for the TV Broadcast.  I was not allowed to cheer, but I kept a straight face and clapped underneath the table a few times. 

I thought the most exciting game during my undergraduate years was the overtime upset of DePaul my sophomore year.  I lost my voice after that game.  I think we went down 0-10 and then we tied the game at the halftime buzzer on a half court shot by Jeff Thomas.

.4.... We can kill that. We have killed that. The potential for our TV ratings gets quite high if we can build interest in the major state markets. The base is already there. OHIO fans are showing for road games in big numbers. @Akron, @Kent, @BG, @Toledo and @Miami.. And the MAC tournament... That kinda interest sells. If you can add casual OHIO fans beyond the alumni traveling to road games in state, you have really got something.

No more "athens tv market won't interest anyone" talk. Expand your horizons. Athens is locked down. Keep going.

Good post. The question I'll post to the board is what attention do we believe we deserve?

Media: I think state news outlets are doing a better job of covering Ohio. I think we see a little more in the Dispatch than in previous years. Even Elton included OU in his wrap up of college basketball. Nationally, we made tons of headlines in 2010 and 2012, so I think we did get the attention we deserved when we deserved it.

Fans: We have the best fans in the MAC, hands down. Ohio Athletics are really a good value for local families. I hope students can get more enthused about sports, but the reality is that most are not in Athens for that. 

Marketing: I get frustrated when I walk around stores in Ohio and see shelves/racks of apparel for other teams not even in Ohio, but can't find one OU shirt or hat. I think the merchandising could be better. I also nearly drove my car off of the interstate in Chicago when I saw a billboard for Miami's grad school.

I was at both the OSU NIT game and the DePaul game.  Both exciting.  Too bad we didn't win the OSU one.  OSU went on to win the NIT in Eldon Miller's final year.  Eldon Miller was one OSU coach that I really liked.  He was the coach at Wittenberg during my freshman year, before I got wise and transferred to OHIO.  Miller is a very fine man.

My Dad took me to his Optimist Club Meeting (Southside / Columbus) at Planks to see Eldon Miller speak a couple of months after he was named coach.  That summer we were at King's Island and we saw Eldon and his family.  Nobody else seemed to recognize them, so we went up and re-introduced ourselves and he and his wife could have not been nicer.  Eldon is back in coaching as an assistant under his son Ben who graduated from my high school (Thomas Worthington).  http://www.uncpbraves.com/sports/mbkb/coaches/index

My first job out of college was as a reporter for Suburban News Publication, beginning in 1983, where I covered Worthington HS (when there was only one h.s. in Worthington). The coach at the time was Bob Miller. I've been out of journalism for over 25 years now, but I just read where Miller announced his retirement. Gotta believe he was the last central Ohio coach that I interviewed a lifetime ago that was still coaching this season.

Not trying to be a tool but those games weren't back to back.  The game right before the Miami game was the game at Eastern where Boals blew out his knee.

That DePaul game was by far the most exciting game during my tenure at Ohio.

I had a lot of positive spin about Cleve coming home and his previous coaching experience with New England and North Carolina.  Had a line about the new look Bobcat's with their green and silver uniforms.

I had forgotten about Coach Seaman. He and Coach Miller were two classy coaches to deal with as a rookie reporter. Can't say that about all of the coaches I covered around the area, circa mid-1980s.

Wow this thread has really taken a life of its own. My recollections on the Ohio vs. Ohio State NIT game of 1986 prompted others to reflect on the Ohio vs. DePaul game in 1983. This was the first big game I remember being an Ohio student. I really feel old when I realize that some of the younger hoops fans on this board may not be that familiar with Coach Joey Meyer let alone his famous father Coach Ray Meyer, whose appearance in Athens in 1983 was I believe the last of his 45 seasons?

The Worthington high school coach discussion is also interesting in that, while I am product of Catholic schools and that configuration at least in the central Ohio area hasn't changed too drastically in the last 30 years, the public, especially Columbus suburban high school scene has changed dramatically. Whereas once there was one high school in Worthington, Hilliard, Dublin, Olentangy etc. now there are several and they all are rather large. Where once a particular coach may have helped a MAC school because of connections, now that is largely changed.

I played high school football for Grandview Heights and Mr. High School Sports Larry Larson in the late 1970s. Grandview, which is land locked and has been for over a century, was and always will be a small-school division team.

When I played we competed with schools from Dublin, Marysville, Olentangy, Hilliard and others. These suburbs had one high school back then about the size of Grandview Heights. Today, all of the above (except for Marysville) have 3 large-school division high schools.

I graduated from Thomas in 2000

The cheerleading squad at OU had a string of people from TWHS on it for a while too, not sure if there are any T-Dubs people on it now though.

Ah! Now I get the Bobcatsquared reference. I miss the old Central Buckeye League. Amazing to think how small some of those suburban schools were.

I remember the nice ovation we gave to the legendary Ray Meyer - it was a great and genuine welcome to OHIO. I also think I had no voice the next day - I don't think I had any voice left at the end of the game!

Mmmm I was living in Chicago by Irving and Ashland. My future Father in Law (Tommy's Gramps ) was a huge Ray Meyer /Depaul fan that got me hooked in hte 75/76 season when Corzine was there. Got to watch the rise of those teams with Gary (Houston) Garland, then through the move out to ROsemont with Strickland/Cummings/Agguire. SOrry to say I was on the other side of Ohio at that point and the Chicago News Media took the loss to OHIO fairly hard. Nice to get some perspective from the other side on that one.

I have two dogs.

Sometimes I ride a bicycle.

Last week, I conversation with one of the neighbors and watched some tv.

Beside calling travelling, change this in hoops:  After a made hoop, let the team what was scored on take it out from the net without having to go back out of bounds beyond the end line.  Easier ignite to fast break.  More action.
