I don't think an effective student section is ever classy.

You're wrong.

Let me clarify a little bit. Can a student section be effective in creating a good atmosphere and loud noise by being classy? yes they can. Can a student section get under a players skin and make them visually agitated by being classy? no. To really get under a players skin you have to be willing to cross a line so to speak. You have to say something both rude and personal that will really bother them. In some cases players laugh it off and thinks its funny. I think Tree this year would be an example of that. (kudos to him. That's my favorite is when you get a player to laugh that's when you know they hear.) other players rise to the heckles and let it elevate there play. That would be Diggs this year. and others let it get to them and it effects there play. that would be McCrae. missed 5 straight ft's I don't think its a coincidence either. It was the taunting the ozone gave hence his late game reaction. You can't invoke that without being un classy. Or maybe you can. If so please post a video of it or give an example of one

Reggie Miller, Larry Bird, and Rasheed Wallace are known to be among the very best trash talkers in basketball history, but I've never heard them to be "un classy". If you can't get under someone's skin without being classless, you are lazy. All of the organized jeering off Javon's trying to hook up with an Ohio student is fair game. Remember when Kevin Garnett told Carmelo that LaLa tastes like Honey Nut Cheerios? That's the line you don't cross.

Reggie Miller the choke signal to spike lee? a little bit un classy. I wouldn't call him a classy player. bird was way before my time and I don't know much about Wallace I don't think of that Detroit team with much class after the malice in the palace but he may be an exception. i'm talking about fans more than players. player to player its a lot easier to get under someone's skin bc they know you. For some random person you never met to get under your skin it takes something extra. Chanting date rape isn't classy. no matter what the context.

I know this is really late, but I was the 110 player whose drums were hit by McCrea. It was infuriating, but I am proud that our student section got him riled up enough to do such a childish thing.

Never too late for BA. Welcome to the board. Thanks for the input. Band was pretty active this year in vocal cat calls.
