I'm in agreement with not offering Perez, but I'm still concerned with depth.  My fingers are crossed for the Ric situation to come through the way he wants it to.

I agree that there's value in any video.  They show what a player likes to do, skills he seems to possess.  They can indicate how a young person competes.

But if the competition is passive/weak, then there's not much insight in cherry-picked highlights re how those skills hold up against good competition.       So, highlights can give about the least info.

I agree.  I am trying to be optimistic, but then you have to realize you're talking about the NCAA.  The chances of him getting another year seem pretty slim to me.

With some luck these late arrivals may have just been late bloomers that were past over after their junior year. We will certainly see if this is the case next year as I believe they will get more PT than normal due to the fact that so many of the recruits backed out.

Bobcat71,

Laster was pretty heavily recruited by some OK mid major programs like Buffalo and BGSU.  He comes from a good HS program that plays good competition.  I believe he will be a good one for Ohio.

On Ryan Taylor...though they didn't offer, Michigan and Wisconsin showed serious interest, which is a good sign.  If it's indeed true that Ohio was his only actual Div. I offer, that's puzzling.  I do know that he was highly prized by this coaching staff, so I trust their judgment.

Simmons, the PG transfer from Houston, had an OK freshman year and got significant playing time in a strong league.  He had a stellar HS career at one of the best HS programs in Ohio in Kettering Alter.  Was offered by some really good programs in the region before he chose Houston.  I'm optimistic he'll be good but he has to sit out next year.

Kendall Crute, of course, we have known about for some time.  Was offered by some good basketball schools in the South.

borna can refresh my memory but Tommy Freeman wasn't exactly swimming in high D-1 offers and I would take five of him on the court any time.  I know it's comforting to see offers from big schools but in the end you just have to trust the coaching staff.  Marin Bota and Johnnie Jackson would have given us an extremely highly rated class if they had signed here right out of HS.

With Mo, Tony, Stevie, Bean, Treg and even Wadley returning I look for the 2-guards to really get some work this year. I wouldn't see redshirting anyone. Taylor is physically ready to play with a year extra while Laster looks like he's fairly smooth. I like Crute as a spot up shooter and Harley I think will be a key. Mo will average his 18 and 8, Tony will go for double figures and the two senior guards will go about 15 and 8 dimes combined. Look for Treg to improve offensively. That leaves about 20 points out there for the newbies. Unless one of them really surprises I think they will all play. This is really an exciting year for us. I thought last year was rebuilding. This is kind of rebuilding but our top 5 returning (not including Wadley) is as good as anyone's returning top 5, unless Tree and Harney return. I am still doubtful they both return.

I mostly agree, but Toledo returns practically everybody (lose Pearson and Smith), they should be scary good in the MAC.

If Setty and Harley blossom, look out.  Those two could be a handful.  We saw glimpses from Setty.  Phillips specifically calling out Harley as talented early on is encouraging.

It's good Phillips sees potential in Harley. I've never seen him play so I can't comment on that but being a redshirt and never having seen the floor, I'd don't want to put my hopes too high here, at least in the short term.

Here's a matchup we'll never see and we only speculate on: Christian's OHIO team next year vs Phillips OHIO team. Very different teams with different coaches. To be honest, I gotta think JC's team would be better hands-down with a 4 star frosh and 2 JUCOs, but you can't  fault Phillips at all considering the circumstances.  And maybe his coaching might even things up some.

You're right..Toledo is going to be amazing. I was thinking more of the East. Toledo will be extremely tough with Juice and Drummond.

Here's what we're looking at now.  Starting five likely to be:

1 - Stevie
2 - any combination of Harley, Crute, R Taylor, Laster, Bean
3- any combination of Harley, R Taylor, Laster, Setty
4- Maurice
5- Campbell

It's going to be interesting seeing how all the new faces to the rotation.

I love that we are set at the PG, 4 and 5 spots. I would say that those 3 spots are as good as anyone in our league has. Our 2 will be Bean and he's extremely seasoned and solid. I will love that 3 to go to a non-Setty. I love Treg's energy off the bench. I think the new Grambling transfer, although a power forward, looked in video like he has wing skills. Like Taylor as well.

I think we will be deep again now that Thomas has been added. If 2 of either Crute, Harley or Laster pans out for minutes and Wadley improves just a "little" we will be tough. I just hope Wadley improves, he is an X factor.

In the limited time I saw him on the floor, I thought: huge frame, surprisingly quick for his size, but extremely limited offensive skill set.  I could be wrong, I ain't Coach K, but that was my impression.  If nothing else he can rebound and block shots, but if he develops some offensive game he could be a handful.

I'm anxious to see who, if anyone, makes "the leap" from last year. Someone who seems to have grown exponentially in the offseason. Think Ivo his sophomore year, or Wilkins last year.

Of course I wouldn't mind it if Campbell turned into Gary Trent but he's already shown enough growth to be satisfied with where he is at, I'm thinking more specifically of Setty, Wadley and Harley. At this point Setty appears to have the best odds of making the leap.

Anyone remember last summer when the feedback from the Coaches Caravan was that JC and staff were blown away with Wadley and had huge expectations for him? Very similar to the way SP was gushing about Harley this summer. What's that about? Is this just bluster to give a kid a psychological boost by publicly stating your belief in him or is this a sincere expression of optimism? Granted, Harley didn't play last year, but can he or Wadley make a huge leap forward this year?

I think a more realistic hope for Campbell would be to turn into the next Brandon Hunter. A rebounding machine that can take over a game. There is nothing wrong with being the next Brandon Hunter. Gary was a once in a lifetime player for the conference. Nobody will ever dominate the MAC like him.

I am drinking my second cup of Harley Kool-Aid. A guard who had a huge growth spurt and needs to fill out his body. Start fixing better food Boyd Dining Hall. I think we will see flashes from him this season and look out for 2015-16. A 6'7"-6'8" guy with guard athleticism can create havoc. A more graceful Ndour possibly?

If Wadley could be a defensive presence without being an offensive liability then please sign me up.

I can't remember any of  the Caravan comments related to Wadley, but I did re-read Wadley's recruiting thread and was encouraged to see that someone in the know, (With the previous staff, anyways) said he was a surprisingly good shooter from three. Now, was it said to boost his confidence? If it was said at the caravan, maybe. On a fan message board, I would have to think it was more of an honest assessment of his ability. I don't know of course but, it is my gut feeling. That said, I'm not sure what kind of offense Saul will throw at these guys but, at the very least, that shooting ability never hurts...
Defensively, at almost 7' (Per Borna's estimate) and with a huge 7' 4" wingspan, if he can figure out where to be at the right times, he will not even have to jump to block/effect quite a few shots. I'm excited to see what he can do... Besides, this year he will not be expected to put in starters minutes with Campbell and N'dour (and even Setty), manning the post. But I would love to see it be a tough decision by Saul to pick who plays.

Edited to address Perimeter's earlier Caravan reference...

Welp... From the Chandler thread, let me just clean some of this egg off of my face... Here's hoping Wadley get's it together and/or gets a redshirt year due to the depth we now have in the post...
Good lord...

Safe to say that we're not going to use up that last scholarship this year?  If we don't that leaves us with 11 active players since Simmons has to sit out this year.

Overall a pretty young and inexperienced team, but I guess that will serve us well in the future.  We still might be able to redshirt somebody if Saul wants to.

I'm not concerned with experience as much with 3 Seniors (Taylor, Bean, NDour) likely starting but I am concerned about depth. Especially in the post. Last year, Christian commented that we didn't have enough guys to run a full 5v5 scrimmage the 2nd half of last year and it showed. Not having a full roster scares me coming off a year like last year where injuries hurt us so badly.

My biggest hope for Saul recruiting last year was that he would hold all of our current players. He did that and I think we will be pretty good because of it. If we stay healthy, I think we surprise people and finish Top 3 in the MAC. The season could get ugly if we have a big injury though. Spefically, NDOUR... If he goes down, not many big bodies left down low...

I view Khari and Setty as 3's more than 4's/5's. Hopefully Wadly takes a big leap to help Campbell and NDOUR.

Setty has been solid all summer...look for him to open a lot of eyes..Bean also I was in town at a recent workout and he crossed over the guy guarding him and met Tony at the rim but dunked over him! Was a WOW play for sure. He mentioned to me that he was only 75% healthy last year and that this season Stevie and himself will be "hell on wheels" together.. Quote

This is interesting, and perhaps the first time I heard Bean struggled with injury last season.  I'd love to see he and Stevie really assert themselves.  As for the injury bug, hopefully that's out of OUr system and went out of town with JC. (not that he was the cause)

A full season of a healthy Mo and Stevie will make a major difference for this team.

Sounds Great - sounds like we got some tricks up OUr sleeves - and do not really surprise me much at all.
