Matt Annen must be standing on his tip-toes. No way he's that tall.

Judging by Bubba's posture and expression, I'm guessing there was an open bar.

I have to admit I'm quite shocked Timmy took the time to attend Leon's or any other former players wedding. Never would have guessed it.

Nothing personal but that comment just goes to show how little most folks knew/know about Tim O'Shea.

+1,

Not the biggest fan of Coach O'Shea's, however it's not because of how he treated or interacted with his players.

Agree...TOS was a good guy. Very pleasant in all of my interactions with him and he wanted to be successful here. You can certainly debate his coaching or recruiting abilities, but don't attack his character.

IMO, the knock against TOS and Ohio was simply he didn't like Athens. Since most of us graduated from Ohio and love Athens, it's hard for people like us to swallow.

Sometimes Athens is hard to swallow too - try going out for a decent meal or playing an 18 hole round of golf or buying a man's suit.  For someone coming in from the east coast/New England, the lack of variety and choices can be tough.  There are many good things here too but it can be a cultural shock for some people.  Just because a person finds out that a certain place isn't for them is no reason to criticize them.  The job looked great I'm sure but a job is only a part of life.

Which is completely fair. Some people love it, some don't. He was a good coach and won a MAC title. Could he have done more with the talent he had? Absolutely. Doesn't make him a bad person though.

Yeah, you only have like 20 options.

Of all the things locals in Athens complain about, the food is mystifying. The growing season is about two months longer than it is in Cleveland, the farmer's market is the best in the state, and dozens of places take advantage of the bounty with really remarkable local cuisine. The vibrant food scene is a huge reason I am in Athens so often.

To avoid a total thread-jack, I also think TOS was a good guy who cared about his players, ran a solid program and won a lot of games, but still underachieved as a coach here. "That's life on the road in the MAC."

My main criticisms of TOS were two fold:

1)   The inability to find consistency at the PG position.  There were a number of his teams that really only needed that player to jump to a higher level.  A Mike Allen type player is what a bunch of those teams needed.

2)  I never felt a lot of enthusiasm from him, which is something JG spoiled us with, and I think Saul will as well.  Even JC showed a lot of enthusiasm despite his critics here.

but Smithfield, RI, population 21K, has a cornucopia of choices for the discerning consumer? TOS didn't like Athens because of where it was not because of what it was.

Come on now fellas.  Athens has a small colection of college-kid-pub-grub places (some of which I love), some bad chain restaurants on East State St., and 4-5 decent but not 5 star fine dining options (1-2 of which I love).  Lets not try to compare it to greater Providence, RI.  I've been to a lot of rural small college towns and Athens is usually better.  But, it ain't the bees knees either.

Anyway, I thought this thread was going to be about TOS to Charleston.  (Talk about restaurants.....)

Great to see the Bobcat pride in that wedding picture.

The de-evolution of this thread is actually helpful to me.  An important client is soon to become an OU parent. I am eager to purchase a gift certificate for her at a nice, high-end-ish Athens eating establishment.  Can anyone recommend one for me?  What is this Zoe place?  Any good?

Last I heard, Tim lived in Newport - bought an historic home there.  LOTS of great places to eat in Newport.

If you have the means, Zoe's menu is fantastic. Some real professionals in the back of house there. You'll want to make sure you purchase a gift certificate large enough to cover the prices. Of course, you can never go wrong with Casa. I've also always had a good experience at Salaam. Rickshaw Thai is pretty good, though tiny. And though they really dumbed down the joint to appeal more to the student crowd, my wife and I were blown away by how good the food and drinks are at Stephens. Sol, Purple Chopstix, and Lui Lui were all hit or miss for me.

Oh, you know what restaurant kicks ass? Rhapsody in downtown Nelsonville. Most of staff are hospitality/culinary students at Hocking and they usually have some easy-listening live music at dinnertime.

Watch out SBH, Ytown Bobcat won't be happy with where this thread's going!  Speaking of which, what about the Over Hang (located at the former Greenery's), the thread of which which originally drew the ire of Ytown?  The place looks nice although I never made it in there to eat.

Strange thread in which I find myself agreeing with Alan, BTC, Jeff and a few other assorted (or is it sorted) people in feeling that TOS was a good guy who cared about his players.  It seemed to me that his personal feelings about Athens mellowed some during his time here, but from what I heard his wife could never make the transition.  It was clear though that he had a great preference for schools in the New England area and his applications for every job that opened up in that area gives stark testimony to that fact.  This irked me a lot, but I never thought TOS was bad person or didn't care for his players beyond their service to his basketball team.

TOS and I would run into each other at the few places you could get fast, good and healthy lunches in Athens at the time, like the Farmacy and Village Bakery. And since I had some connections with Tim-  I grew up in New England too and still spent summers in Rhode Island, or that his nemesis on the court at BC was future NBA AllStar Michael Adams, who  went to the same high school I did (though in different times)- we had plenty to chat about.

Tim liked Athens a lot more than his wife did, plus he had his Newport home while he was here. These matters made going back to his roots always a possibility.  I found him personable- warm, funny, interested in others opinions, and from what I could tell, pretty much a good guy. Although I really didn't know him that well outside of our lunch encounters, he did email when he left, wishing the best for Ohio, and thanking me and others for our support. I still root for him.

P.S. I still love New England but consider myself an Athenian.

I always felt Tim did what he thought was best for his guys. This led him to some poor decisions, but that's not a terrible fault to have.
