Upsan is correct that if you want to prepare for theological seminary (which is all graduate level degrees), most bachelor's degrees will be sufficient for admission to a seminary if the GPA is good enough.

In most churches, degrees, especially seminary, are needed for ordination and employment as a minister.  There are exceptions.

As for youth ministers...like JSF said, not all youth ministers have specific theological and ministry training, but it gives a candidate an advantage if they have a degree in ministry.

Some undergraduate schools have bachelor degrees in ministry related fields, including youth ministry specializations.  Maybe this is what Kendall is wanting to pursue.  Or maybe he's involved in a church in Georgia where he can get on the job training.

It's possible for someone to prepare for ministry while at Ohio University, but if somebody wants to start taking related courses on the undergraduate level, you can't do it.

Is it essentially too late to fill his slot if he does indeed not come back?

No.  One would think so, but it isn't too late.  Some good players still available.  More wing players available than other positions usually.

Most of us had our first experience on campus at the beginning of Fall quarter with all of the students back on campus and a dorm full of other freshmen sharing the same emotions. For student athletes they come to Athens in July and the vibe is much different. The bball team is so small, there's only a couple of other freshmen to commiserate with. If you're susceptible to homesickness there's not a lot of distractions for a freshman in Athens in the summer.

With that being said, I don't regret spending every weekend my freshman year striking out at the Greenery instead of driving back home to see my high school girlfriend. Carpe Diem.

I've wondered before if the ghost town environment of Athens in the summer could be negative for some kids coming in for their first semester.

I loved my summer in Athens, but I was also going into my Senior year and well aware of the area/established with a group of friends.

I don't know that starting in summer would necessarily be bad, but it would definitely be different than starting in the fall. Just a different vibe. Much quieter and less of the college feel.

OHIO is lacking a seminary because its a public school. There isn't an AG school or emphasis either with Ohio State having that role. The main avenue for outreach at Ohio is medical services where they have the capacity to provide it. There is no law school in Athens existing in a small market. I think it contributes to the party school perception not drawing in the more intellectual crowd.

If a person coming to Ohio University wanted to immediately go into seminary after graduation from OU, I would recommend taking a bachelor's degree in the liberal arts or humanities.  I would recommend getting involved with a solid, intellectually challenging church in Athens.  I would also recommend investigating possible opportunities with parachurch organizations on campus.

Another option would be to prepare at Ohio University for a non ministry career, then later in life attending a seminary for a mid career addition or change.

The trend in the U.S. is toward bivocational ministry, in which a person has a job in the "secular" world and also has a part time job with a church.

I can't think of any public universities in the U.S. that has a seminary.  Many have graduate programs in religion, but they are usually not geared toward preparing people for practical ministry, though one could be in such a degree program and be involved in a local faith community in order to prepare.

Many private colleges with a religious affiliation have majors in ministry fields for bachelor degrees.  Those who take these often don't go on to seminary after getting the bachelors.

Hard to say what kind of preparation track Kendall has in mind.  I would say he's receiving some direction from his local church in Georgia.  Whatever path he chooses, I wish him well.  I hope the option of returning to Ohio is still on the table.

I could be wrong, but I thought I saw somewhere that his gf's dad is his pastor. Regardless, some adult needs to talk some since into him, throwing away a full scholarship is a big deal.

As for replacing him, we already had an open scholarship so its not like there is someone out there that we wanted but didn't have room for. I don't think his leaving changes the search and offer process, it just creates one less option off the bench. Jordan Perez was a g/f we looked at when we signed Laster and Taylor and he was the odd man out. His only other offer was from Texas Pan-Am and according to verbal commits he hasn't signed with anyone yet. My preference would be to hold up and not tie up a 4 yr scholarship with someone we weren't excited about.

Don't I recall a thread/comment about a fairly strong campus ministry/minister that is involved with the team?  A husband and wife maybe?  I would hope someone connected Crute with them.  That said, if that is his calling...

Mark & Judy - Athletes In Action. I would be Very surprised if they have not been in contact with Kendall on multiple occasions.

FYI...Two 1960s grads - Joel Hunter and Mike Armstrong - of my  high school earned bachelor degrees at Ohio and then went on to divinity schools.  As did my Ohio classmate John Edwards.

The AIA husband-wife team you are referring is Mark and Mindy, I believe.  Mark is the unofficial chaplain for the football team.  The old Delta Tau Delta house is now the AIA House, and Mark and Mindy were instrumental in making this happen.

I may have error per "Mindy". They are Very connected to the team. For those who may not know who we refer to - they have a "flag" type green & white banner they hold up at most every game - right behind the bench. Easy to find them if they are at an away game where they always do the same, and they do go to quite a few!

Mike, I think there are quite a few people who have earned a bachelors degree at Ohio then ended up going to seminary. I noted in another post that that's possible. What's not possible is to take courses in ministry on the undergraduate or graduate levels at Ohio...those courses don't exist. But you can take a liberal arts degree and that is good preparation for a master's program at a seminary.

I'm an ordained priest in the Church of Latter-Day Dude. All I had to do was fill out a form online. What's all this talk about studying and seminary?

Among Athens's many strengths is there are several churches and organizations meeting this description. (Of course, there are also ones I'd recommend avoiding.)

And Athens is magical in the summer... if you have some experience with the town. If that's your first impression, it can be really tough.

Mike Harris. Allen Hester.

We extended an offer to DJ Porter out of Pittsburgh earlier in the year. As of now, he is headed to JUCO, but it might not hurt if Fuss gave him a call.

I used to think Athens was dead in the summer, but these past 6-7 years it seems like more and more students take summer courses.  No, it's not as busy as during Fall/Spring semesters, but it's not a student-less wasteland, either.

I believe Tim Woodson transferred in the early '80s for similar reasons/endeavors (as Crute) - at least that was the rumor on campus. It was as Nee was coming in.

Good memory, cc.  Same situation.  Woodson was a significant talent.
