based on his public twitter feed he seems to be very attached to his girlfriend back home, hope this is just a case of freshman home sickness that can be reasoned out and resolved quickly.

How come we never hear about this sort of voluntary attrition with the football team?

Because there are 100+ members to cover. It happens

In ten years of following Ohio athletics, the only football players I can remember voluntarily leaving did so for football reasons, mostly because there was too much depth at their position ahead of them (Bell, Snyder, Brian Sweeney). If they happen, we would hear more about them since there are so much more scholarship players in football than basketball. And on that note, every year there is rampant transferring across division 1 basketball. Why is this not a problem for football?

This sort of thing always tends to happen to us right around late summer and in the fall leading up to a season. Crute, Rio Adams, Marquis Horne, Steven Coleman, Alex Kellogg, and Joe Mitchell all come to mind, and they each had the talent to make a big impact on the court. I'll never claim to know how complex the life of a student athlete is, and if Kendall is not passionate about basketball anymore, I can't fault him for that. But if he does still want to be a college basketball player, a place like OU will still afford him plenty of avenues to be a youth minister.

To be fair to Kendall, do you need to study theology to become a youth minister? I'm not religious so I do not know, but I know OU does not offer that opportunity.

What I find interesting is his future career path, while also choosing to come to Ohio.  I admire the choice at a young age to want to enter into youth ministry.  I just wonder why he and his family signed the letter and chose Ohio with this in mind.  I'm sure there are schools with basketball and his career choice in the same place.  All that said, I certainly hope he stays.  He's impressed me as a really good kid that would be a great addition to Ohio University.  I'm sure he could do a lot of good in youth ministry in SE Ohio while he's there, and drop a few three's along the way.

From what I've seen on his Twitter feed, this has become a passion of his just in the last six months or so.

Certainly, there are opportunities for ministry without any kind of degree, but if that's what his passion is, I'm sure that's what he'd prefer to study, and the degree in that field can be helpful. For anyone interested in going to seminary (master's in ministry program), any bachelor's degree qualifies you.

I'm sure he just needs to think about things. I doubt he's made any sure decisions yet.

Thanks for the insight.  I've not looked into that.  I think he is a great addition to the program, and surely hope he stays.  At the same time, I'd understand the change if that's his real passion going forward as a career path.

I don't think there's a degree or experience requirement to be a minister (my church's youth minister worked in retail for 10 years before entering the ministry), but he would probably need some sort of degree if he wants to be licensed as a counselor (I'm not sure where the line is drawn between between ministry and counseling).

This just never felt like a good fit. The writing was on the wall here for a long time. His real passion is his girlfriend at home, he's gone back to GA on weekends to visit her since he came to Athens. Maybe he will have a change of heart, but my guess is he transfers to Kennesaw State to be closer to her.

Depth was already my biggest concern with this squad...

I think we'll be ok if everyone stays healthy... We have the injuries pile up like last year and we will be in trouble.

Is it essentially too late to fill his slot if he does indeed not come back?

Keep him in Athens until the students come back to town, and I think we'll be fine.  When is that BTW?

Reading this - It looks pretty well final.  But I won't say the "WWHWIHFE" just yet.

Not to sound insensitive but couldn't the additions of Laster and Taylor factor into his new decision? Before they were added he was the lone shooting guard recruit. Now there are two others around him. I hate to say it but our depth will be good this year, now we have an extra schollie to save and add to all our others next year. Saul Ball will have time AND spots to work magic.

Pretty sure we can make an internet meme of the greatest WWHWIHFE in Bobcats history. Stevie Fresh is just dying to get one.

Most of us had our first experience on campus at the beginning of Fall quarter with all of the students back on campus and a dorm full of other freshmen sharing the same emotions. For student athletes they come to Athens in July and the vibe is much different. The bball team is so small, there's only a couple of other freshmen to commiserate with. If you're susceptible to homesickness there's not a lot of distractions for a freshman in Athens in the summer.

With that being said, I don't regret spending every weekend my freshman year striking out at the Greenery instead of driving back home to see my high school girlfriend. Carpe Diem.

Don't I recall a thread/comment about a fairly strong campus ministry/minister that is involved with the team?  A husband and wife maybe?  I would hope someone connected Crute with them.  That said, if that is his calling...

In my experience, youth ministers are the least likely members of a pastoral team to have a theological degree.
