Couldn't it also be argued that back in Daniels' day the MAC was a lot tougher?
I would say so but much of DJ's success was earned on the National stage. I can still hear Verne Lundquist saying "This...kid...can't...miss" against Georgetown. I remember him outplaying Trey Burke on the way to taking down Michigan. I can still see him hitting the huge off balance floater in between two defenders with the shot clock at zero against USF right after Jim Spanarkle had said "Cooper's got to make something happen".

Yeah, Antonio Gates was a pretty fair Elite Eight hoops player.
This is one of the problems with people making these lists based on lists of stats, versus watching the games 15 years ago. Gates was one of the better talents who's come through the MAC, though he was only here for 2 years. If you weren't watching at the time, his contributions aren't likely to stick out from old statistical leader lists, making him easy to overlook.

Every now and then I think about DJ's steal at the end of regulation vs. UNC, and fantasize about what the announcer's call would have sounded like at that moment had Walt hit that free throw.....

actually it was Walt that made the steal and tossed it to DJ, I fantasize about what the announcers call would have sounded like if DJ's half court shot at the buzzer would have been two inches to the left.

Just found a replay on YouTube, and you're right. For some reason I thought DJ swatted it out of his hand on the way up and took it down the court for the shot, but it was Walt that tipped it to DJ.

Imma blame that on the good luck beer I drank that game.

Whatta great game that was to be at live. UNC had us down about six minutes in. I think we trailed 23-12. It was definitely tipping point. We could not, no way afford to fall further behind. We did not.

I see a box score that says we got outrebounded 56-26. I thought it was worse, like 63-21--crazy that we could get to OT that way.

I could talk about that UNC game for hours.

Just for the sake of some variety, how about DJ's steal leading to a fastbreak leading to a no-look over the head alley-oop to DeVaughn when we blew out Georgetown DJ's freshman year?

DJ was something else.

I remember reading a book about the things that are wrong with AAU basketball. Basically they follow the number 1 ranked 5th graders AAU team up until college and at one point in the book they play a team from Chicago with DJ Cooper on it. I'll never forget the book describing how the other teams guards(coop being one of them) kept draining 3's on them and their coach was freaking out because he had no idea how to defend it and at that moment I said to myself, yep that's Coop.
