3 page thread discussing why they don't have a hanging scoreboard.

I like them.

Edit:
Mind. Blown.
We can't afford it. Check
It would help recruiting. Check
Can the ceiling support it? Check
Mention of VCU corner video boards. Check.

I believe they are going through the same thing as Toledo did a couple of years ago and are ineligible for postseason because they failed the APR. That's got to be tough on a fanbase.

App St. was 9-21 last year with 4 of those wins vs non-D1 teams. They won their exhibition game Thursday 71-69 vs the Bobcats of Lees McRae College, a DII team that finished 7-20 a year ago. (side note: The Bobcats' logo is a green paw print.)

App struggled with the Bobcats early on but was able to hold them to just 32% shooting for the game. App shot at 42% and out rebounded LM 57/39 but committed 20 turnovers and was only 53% from the FT line. Their top 2 scorers were 11/11 at the foul line and the rest of the team was just 4/17. They've got a new coach so they will be going through some of the same adjustments that we're experiencing. With the difference in talent and the home court advantage the outcome of the game should be favorable, the bigger unknown is how much will our team improve over last week.

Boone, NC, is a college town along the lines of Athens. Wish we had them in the MAC, but travel wouldn't work too well for them going north in the winter.

Quite a bit bigger than Athens and a big winter tourist area with ski resorts and the like. Their stadium is really slick looking built into the side of the mountains. And believe it or not, they have an 18 hole golf course. Nice town as is neighboring Blowing Rock.

And as a side note, just as many OU fans like to be referred to as Ohio, our opponent on Saturday is pronounced Appa Latchin State.

+1. I agree, especially in football-would be a great addition to the MAC.

What's the deal with getting Chandler Thomas' transcript from Grambling that showed he graduated? Shouldn't that be a relatively routine thing? Isn't he someone who could play 10-15 minutes a game?

I spent a long weekend in Boone last month. It reminds me more of Kent than Athens. There are a lot fewer bars and a lot more restaurants and retail than Athens. The football stadium reminded me of Peden with a big hill. It's at elevation (3,333 feet) and you can feel it. Amenity-wise, it's comparable to most MAC stadiums. Their tailgating scene was way better than anywhere in the MAC. It's a cool town with beautiful surrounds and great hiking nearby.

I am overly concerned about the number of eligible players.
At the current time we have 8 and waiting for 1 to clear and 1 to get healthy.
This basically means the starters will be playing big minutes which is not what you want at this point in the season. Any kind of foul trouble issues and we are in trouble.
We are at a disadvantage in every game because of this. Most teams play 8-10 guys regularly. I would expect coach to have a plan B and add in some walk-ons. You need to have at least 10 guys to play 5 on 5 in practice.
This issue along with all the new players will make the challenges for a good season more difficult to over come.

Saul has added like three walk-ons hasnt he? How many do you think he needs? Don't worry about practices. Even if Kaminski and Thomas aren't ready to play games they can still practice.

Chandler will be eligible any day now. I am a little puzzled on why he is not eligible. The only thing I can come up with was that his summer internship with Nike may have been his last undergrad requirement and that credit needs to be present on his final Grambling transcript. Maybe. Whatever the case is, if we are waiting on Grambling, I hope Chandler, with help from our DOBO, is a pest with them on the phone.

Well, if the transcript takes as long as getting the actual degree, I wouldn't be surprised if this isn't done until December. Summer classes/internships/credits always throw a wrench into the process.

This could be the question of the day, and maybe the week. Sounds like someone may be putting some red tape in the way of Mr. Thomas.

we have 16 players on the roster, at least 14, maybe 15 will be eligible for the season. The one player with an injury has recovered and is cleared to practice, the one player waiting on transcripts will be cleared any day now. The sky is not falling.

Having spent my entire life in the region, I refuse to use the currently politically correct soft a in Appalachian. Schooling in Bellaire ingrained the hard a.

Appy State too.

And Lou - as a kid, you would have never said you lived in Appalachia - you would have said the "steel valley" or just the "valley." Including that area of Ohio in Appalachia is a fairly recent phenomenon for government demographic reporting.

I guess 71 didn't realize that Plan B was Saul's Plan A? We already have four walk-ons and all of those transfers who aren't eligible to play are eligible to practice.
We could play 5v5v5 right now. I am GLAD we have the early stretch of OOC games to get our inexperienced newcomers time and to develop a rotation. That'll prepare us for MAC play, and while we go through these early games trying to develop new guys we still have a great core of 3 seniors in Ndour, Stevie and Bean to lean on.

There are some very low expectations around here for the level of talent we return. The sky is not falling.

Nah....we were in the foothills of the Appalachians according to Mrs LeMasters' 4th grade geography books. It was a little later we found that we were in the poverty pocket when all the mills closed down. Then it was the Appalachian poverty region for that war on poverty.
Life Magazine even did an "expose'" about football in the Valley, headlining it as an "Escape from a Mill Town" if memory serves. Essentially saying all we had was football or the military to look forward to.
You are correct about it always being called the Valley, though.
