Per Jason Arkley

The 2013 Diamond Head starts this weekend. The Hawaii holiday tournament will give Ohio games vs high majors in neutral court setting

Here's a link to the 2013 event: http://espnevents.com/diamond-head-classic/

It's an 8 team tournament in Hawaii over Christmas. Teams in this year's Classic include Iowa State, St Mary's,  South Carolina, and Akron.

Usually a good tournament.  Been 6 years since I've been to Hawaii, maybe it's time to go back.

The WSU Shockers are also confirmed for this event next year. It is an ESPN ran event, likely the reason a MAC school gets a spot most years due to our relationship with them.

From various twitter accounts it looks like Nebraska and Colorado are also confirmed for 2014.

Nebraska, Colorado, Wichita State... those are teams we can compete with, I think. Hopeful this won't end like those Kansas or Pitt match-ups from recent seasons past

Step in the right direction. Good to see that Akron made this last year. Are we starting to see a return of the MAC team to the preseason tournaments or is it JC that is bringing Ohio back into the picture for these unilaterally?

This is great news, and hopefully OUr guys make a some noise during next year's trip to Hawaii.  Some that are making statements to the tune of "finally, we're in a 'real' holiday tournament" should try to get a view on reality.  Do the math on why this isn't an annual trip for OUr team.  Think about questions such as:  How many of these "real tournaments" are there?  How many good to decent basketball programs are there?  How much does it cost to travel to one of these?

UNLV, WSU, Colorado, and Nebraska? Good get. Two of these teams are currently ranked. Icing on the cake would be having Dayton, Xavier, Ohio State, Cincinnati, or West Virginia to play a game in the Convo.

I'm in.  It's not the Maui Invitational but only a 20 minute flight.  Hopefully we can win it this time.  The St. John's game was fantastic (I think somebody still owes me for the DVD I sent them).  The SMC final was aggravating last time.  The Stan Sheriff Center is kind of like a miniature  Convo.  Looking forward to spending sometime with fellow Attackers in the Aloha State.

Hey, hawaiian bobcat, I think we met in the concourse during the Rainbow Classic in '07 before the opener  against St. John.s. I assume this tourney has replaced the Rainbow Classic so what's different about it?  Won't forget the full court pass Bubba Walther threw to Leon Williams for a layup to win by one at the buzzer. Come to think of it, Leon was also the recepient of maybe the greatest clutch Bobcat pass when Fears went full court to Sonny Troutman who missed the corner shot but Leon tipped it in at the buzzer to win the MAC tourney.

Anyway, Stan Sheriff Center is definitely a lot like the Convo, plus beer and better food. Doubt I'll get to make it back but my family had a great time in Oahu and Kauai.

The allure of Nature Boy.

And it seems like JC has this program on a nice track.

George Washington is also in and of course host Hawaii, so that makes Ohio, Colorado, George Washington, Nebraska, Wichita State, Hawaii and two other teams to be announced.

when you include the Thanksgiving tourneys, there's a lot. Not saying we do this one every year. Stick to the facts, please, and don't put words in my mouth.

The Rainbow Classic and Diamond Head Classic are essentially the same thing just different sponsorship.  Stub I think we did meet before the championship with SMC.  I had some fun with a member of their dance team with the ordeal ending with me stating something along the lines that my maid went to SMC.  I fully expect to meet Monroe Slavin at this tournament.  Christmas came early this season and next.

UNLV being 1 of those 2 TBD?

Good stuff, and I like the list of teams.  A good group, but not completely overwhelming either.  It will be a fun few days (and even more fun if you can get to Hawaii).

The paragraph near the bottom implies UNLV will be one of the two remaining fields.  It will be interesting to see if any of these teams besides Wichita State and Hawaii will travel.  I saw WSU a few years ago at the MIT play in the 5th place game and they were packed and cheering like it was the final 4.  We could represent ourselves well at this thing could lead to better tournaments in the future.

My apologies if you think I was putting words in your mouth - not my intention.  I'm truly asking what you, and others who think we should be playing in tournaments like this how we should go about doing so more often.  I don't know the cost, or the selection process.  I'm just guessing that there's serious competition to get into one of these, so I don't think we should assume it's easy to get into one.  I'm glad we are though.  Hopefully they play well against some quality opponents.

a question - how long has it been since we've been in one? I'm not assuming its easy, but we have probably one if the better non-major programs fan base, I doubt that it is a money loser for us, and you would think we would go every few years if you count all the early season tourneys as well.

I hope I did this right. This is a copy of Thanksgiving tourneys last year and you're telling me that we can't get into one of them each year?

I get conflicted with the timing of these things. If we have a Bowl Game I think I would always be inclined to support football and attend the bowl.
Since the bowl games are announced around mid December it is difficult to make Hawaiian travel arrangements that don't conflict with the bowls that have MAC tie ins.
That being said, it would be nice if there was a travel package from Columbus to Hawaii including airfare, hotel and team events.

hi ytown, it was nice to meet you in St Pete. Anyway, these are Thanksgiving tourneys, so they would not conflict with a bowl game anyway, maybe a regular season game though

The Diamond Head Classic is over Christmas.  The Sheraton Hawaii Bowl was lucky having both teams also in the Diamond Head Classic.  I know with the added MAC tie in Bowls it would be impossible for Ohio to end up in Honolulu but it would be perfect.
