If NIU comes into this game with a losing record we will then have a better than 50-50 chance of a W.

Does this have anything to do with variable change that I saw discussed in the movie 21 yesterday?

NIU is improved from their past couple dark years but I still think we have superior talent. Hopefully we play with some fire.

Yeah, this should be a W at the Convo to start MAC play. I'm interested to see how NIU does this season. They should be decent.

I love when MAC play starts up. The OOC is entertaining but I can't wait to get it going with familiar foes and standings and golf standings and so on.

A good warm up (Sorry McKinney) at home before a pretty tough stretch.

Good if we play well. NIU isn't a doormat these days, and we're not nearly good enough to overlook anyone.

I'm beyond eager in my anticipation of Fake Jeff McKinney's assessment of the matchup.

NIU will come in at 6-5 after beating UC Riverside at home in OT. Their usual leaders were stymied but they got 18 from Johnson and 15 from Baker -- more than double their season averages.

Heard they lost Darrell Bowie, their leading scorer, with a shoulder injury.

At least it gives me several days to try and load the UNCW game. Haven't been able to watch that one yet.

while I'm waiting, the Cavs might as well lose a couple more games!

Looking at KenPom.com:

NIU is a very poor offensive team

  • They average 94.7 points per 100 possessions (285th in the country)
  • Turn the ball over on 22.8% of possessions (317th)
  • Shoot 2-pointers at just 44% (281st)
  • However, their offensive rebounding rate is 38.5% (20th) and they do get to the line with a FTA/FGA of 50.2 (8th)

NIU is an above-average defensive team

  • They allow 98.0 points per 100 possessions (116th)
  • They turn their opponents over on 23.7% of possessions (23rd)
  • However, do allow 50.2% shooting on twos (255th) and 35.8% on threes (252nd)

NIU and CMU are the only two MAC teams I haven't seen play this year so I have no context for the above numbers but IMO the numbers scare me. Teams that drive a lot have given us fits because we are terrible stopping it. And then teams that pressure out guards give us fits.

Despite some early struggles, I am optimistic about conference play. The team will come together in the next 2 weeks. Is it 7 yet?
