The Selection Committee is going to look at this as a bad loss. Our at-large chance is officially shot.

. . . for the CBI!

This team has made so many poor decisions that it would not surprise me if they pulled the bus over to pick up a hitchhiker on Route 23.

or let one off as he vents on social media. Nothing worse to a coach after a bad loss to have someone spreading covert hostility to the world

According to Arkley. Worst loss since loss to BG in 2009. Says Groce made team come out And watch Falcons celebrate. Ohio has trailed by 25 at some point in 3 of 4 MAC road games this year.

Actually, worse loss since farther back than that. OU lost that game in 2009 by 34, and it lost tonight by 36. Arkley said he'd have to go farther back to find the last time the team lost by this many.

Maybe that is what Stevie's tweet was referring to.

If I were Coach, I would collect all of their electronics and let them ride back from Michigan with only their thoughts of how atrocious that was.

And the option to chat with the hitchhiker.

Think the Athletic Department would reimburse me for the $6.95 I spent to watch the first 3/4 of the game. I decided to do the dishes and clean up dinner for the last 1/4. That was way more entertaining and bearable.

Is there such a thing as a "signature loss"? If so, this would be it. We'll look back on this in a few years and laugh like we do when we remember losing to Utah State 5-0 in football (or whatever it was). We can only go up from here...

I would stand by a Social Media Ban but I don't think it's Saul's style.

I really don't see Saul making many changes to the line up as the talent after the starting 5 is not there and the last thing he would do is to play with the players heads.
I believe he knew 2 things taking this job; 1) That JC's recruits would back out leaving him with 4 spots to fill very late in the recruiting season. 2) He would be the 4th coach at Ohio in 7 years which always impacts performance.
In addition he needs to make a hard decision with 2 returning players for next year that really are not contributors. So he will now have 3-5 positions to fill.
The good part in all this is that if my assessment is correct he will basically have a team with all his recruits for next year. A no excuse year 2.
The only player he should show favor for is Mo as he might have a shot at the next level, emphasis on might.

WHy are they responsible? Most of us knew this one was coming and a lot decided not to invest. I made a hundred and some games over a 4 year period and saw some atrocious losses. Saw more games in the last 4. Never regretted being in a gym or watching/listening to the Cats win or lose. 6.95 is great money in my book. Beats gas in the car, dinner, drinks and time away from work that you would spend if you road tripped to the Convo or an away game.

Big Hint. They are gonna lose some more this year. DONT SPEND THE MONEY IF YOU FEEL THAT YOU ARE BEING RIPPED OFF....come back in a couple of years and jump back on the bandwagon.....we'll save your place.

As for the Groce/BUGS game he did have the guys watch the celebration for a short time. Remember that one. Hard to win up there and at EMU. And there were many games where the phones and media were tightly controlled or put in a box overnight to ensure they were focused on the game. I work with a performing arts group that turn their phones in in MAY and get them back after the national championship in AUGUST. They are there and focused on each other and the performance the entire tour.

Couple things:

1) Mo DOES have a shot at the next level. He could play in Europe right now and make a nice living for himself.

2) Next year will be vastly different because they'll have depth and competition for spots, and most of them will be Saul & staff's recruits. Also, for what Saul wants to do, Simmons & Kaminsky are going to make big differences. I can also see Ryan Tayor going to a higher level with summer work. I continue to feel like someone is going to end up leaving, opening up a scholarship to work with in April. Don't mistake that for knowledge, its just a gut feeling. Next year we'll be fine.

Great post, bornacat. Agree absolutely. I subscribed to the webcast last night even though I kind of saw a bad game coming. Those who stay on the bandwagon now will enjoy the fruits of the program when it gets better.

Burn the tape and move on. Hell didn't we go scoreless up there for the first 12 minutes a few years ago when DJ was a freshman? That place just seems to bring out the absolute worst in us.

Actually, the "scoreless till the 900 minute mark of the first half" happened during DJ's junior season, when we reached the Sweet 16. We had just lost to Toledo up there the game before. I saw both in person. After the terrible performance at EMU, that's when the team began it's big run to St. Louis.

The only difference is that year's team didn't get run by 36. They lost by 13, and had it to within 5-6 late.

This year is what it is, and it's gonna be up and down in terms of results. I just hope Saul sets the tone for expectations for effort and focus on the defensive end. He still has some guys he needs to set the tone for future seasons on this squad. I'm sure all of that is on his agenda though.

Well the second-half feed was remarkably better . . . the play of the Bobcats, however, was not! After the end of the game, I listened to both Russell's interview with Saul and the interview on the webcast with EMU coach Rob Murphy. The former was interesting because I've never heard Saul so angry. I expect some major changes before the next game. We may see some new faces get more playing time and/or some changes in roles. The latter was filled with "coach speak," but my takeaway points were that Murphy is a class guy and that he didn't take total credit for OHIO's bad shooting. He said that their defense was good but that OHIO "couldn't hit the broadside of a battleship" in this game. (rough paraphrase)

I know we shouldn't pick apart what is said on the coach's show but the defense was not good. They gave up 1.06 points per possession to an EMU team that is one of the worst offensive teams in the country. They have only given up less than 1.0 point per possession once in MAC play. It is hard to sustain that kind of defense and have a winning program.,

Perhaps, my writing wasn't clear on this point. Murphy was saying that EMU's defense was pretty good, but that it didn't account for all of OHIO's poor showing. Some of it he implied was due to our extremely poor shooting percentage even when we had open shots.

'97-'98 we lost to BSU 106-57. That could be it.

I was thinking this morning that this is one to just shake off and move on. The last few Ohio coaches have had difficulty winning at EMU. TOS was 2-2; Groce was 0-2; JC was 1-0, a 58-56 win. It's probably the combination of EMU playing zone for 40 minutes and playing in an empty gym.

Never mind. It was the EMU game where we were scoreless for the first 10+ minutes. In the game before that one we were up 15-0 on Toledo only to fall behind at the half and lose the game. Awesome road trip.
