If exposed to that extreme cold, frostbite could set in in 30 minutes. I'm not surprised they cancelled.

Maybe if you're naked. Generally people dress appropriately. And minimize time outside. It's really not a big deal.

Well, if it's not a big deal for you, I guess it's not a big deal for anyone.

University policy - when the wind chill gets to -20 or the sheriff declares a level 3, the university is closed. It's on the university website.

Minor issue, outrage at somewhat overreaching bureaucracy, counteroutrage at overreaction to somewhat overreaching bureaucracy, both sides entrench, repeat.

You can now slot every argument in American society into the same track. They all end the same place.

Except history and facts are on my side. I'd love to see one instance cited of someone getting frostbite because of the outdoor portion of their commute to school. It's about comfort, not safety in any way.

I did my undergrad degree at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin. Going by this rational classes would have been canceled from January to March.

That kind of cold can trigger an asthma attack within minutes. What if someone's car breaks down? The cold becomes a real concern. If it's a few minutes walking, yeah, probably no big deal. But it doesn't take much to make it a big deal.

Our boy Andrew must have more power than we think - OU is open tomorrow even though projected wind chills when classes start tomorrow morning are the same as they were today. Bundle up and walk like a penguin.

Somehow we managed to survive in Athens today as did all the universities in Ohio that remained open. Mail was delivered on time, businesses were open as usual, Fed Ex on schedule with a delivery, city services functioning, and I even got some blood work I needed done.

Ohio campus transportation systems on their regular schedule, Ping open, Baker Center open, Alden open. Classes closed. Very cold but very doable in the real world.

Exactly, and not surprising. My kid's school cancelled when it was around 0 wind chill very early last winter, and by the end of winter there was 8-10 days with wind chills colder in which they had school. Funny how safety can NOT be compromised...unless it gets to be too much and we realize we have work to do. Make no mistake, the whole thing is a joke.

Jeffrey - Again I would love to see even one case of serious issue caused by a student's foot commute in frigid temperatures. My wife & 2/3 kids have asthma, and they'd all tell you the world shouldn't revolve around their increased chance of an attack.

Did I say it should? All I'm saying is it can be a problem and it's not entirely unreasonable to err on the side of caution.

I wonder if tax season brings out these feelings in all folks who work in finance.

Exactly. These decisions are seldom made with any objective criteria. They are seat of the pants. And, there is more of a tendency to close schools for weather-related reason today than "back in the day." And, to top if off, my wife could not go swimming at the Aquatic Center on Thursday because of the closure. And, this makes her even more angry than when she can't find a shuttle bus! ;-)

Back in the day, the Athens City Schools did not have rural bus routes. Most students walked to school so there wasn't the need to close schools. When I taught OWA at AHS in the early 80's and did home visits mostly in the northern part of the district, I got a real feel for the dangerous conditions navigating those roads. Flat streets on the east side of Athens may look perfectly passable. Driving a bus up or down Sand Ridge Road is a whole other deal.

For those of you not in Athens, kids here haven't gone to school since last Thursday.

In terms of the city schools, Alan, that's a point well taken. Now, I could go into a diatribe now about why the state should have never forced the consolidation of AHS, Chauncey and The Plains, but I'll save you the pain. A much better plan, for a number of reasons, would have been a consolidation of just The Plains HS and Chauncey.

Angst over softening over today's youth. Check. Inflating of consequences. Check. Evidence of prior generation's superiority. Check. Blame the government. Check. Free space for grousing.

BINGO!

BINGO!

I'VE GOT A BINGO!

Just noticed that Columbus City Schools are closed again today (Friday). It must be all those hilly rural roads. ;-)

Maybe not for colleges and universities, but this is a problem most elementary/middle/high schools could solve by going to school year-round. Go to school for 2.5-3 months, then take a long break, rinse and repeat. Of course, you can't take the whole winter off, but you can save yourself some trouble.

It's all the roads that the City of Columbus can't get a salt truck to because they annexed the whole damn county.

Last school year, we missed a couple days because... well, I guess there were some clouds in the sky. Anyway, you might not believe this, but Houston schools don't have built-in calamity days. The district tried to make it up on Memorial Day and there was very nearly a revolt.

All of the NE Ohio (you know, where we're a lot more used to this crap) public universities closed today until at least noon (most did not open at all). If only their admins were internet hardasses this would have never happened :)

None of the private ones took more than a 4 hour delay and most did nothing at all because this is a gift from Jesus that shouldn't be questioned, but I digress.
