Day Tripper and Old Rocket,

I apologize for letting you down, I clearly don't reach some imagined standard of what a sports fan should be in your eyes. I am a fan of Bobcat football and men's basketball and don't follow other sports teams regardless of their gender or record and didn't realize that being a sports fan was an all or nothing proposition. I now see that every comment I make about our football team is really just a comment I'm not making for the women's club rugby team. How could I be so selfish? It is only through your public shaming of me and others like me that I now see the terrible error in my ways.

Do you think you could find it in your heart to allow me to continue to comment on this board occasionally or must I be banished in shame forever? I'm so sorry for being an inadequate fan, please forgive me. FWIW I did tune into the women's game Saturday but failed to comment on it here and now I feel ashamed for being such a lousy fan. I'm so sorry.

Were that it be in power to forgive, I would. But being a Rocket Fan first, I don't think it's possible and I don't want to over-step the board's courtesy of allowing me to post.

As I wrote on the thread about the women's victory over Miami - What got my interest was reading the article in The Blade of the Bobcats destroying BUGS and seeing what a fine season the women were having. I was simply surprised there was not much note of them on the board. First BUGS women have been a powerhouse in the league and second, just happy to see any Falcon team beaten so badly.

Lastly, I apologize to any of the Bobcat faithful who may have taken my original post so personally. Although, I must admit, I didn't realize there must be a rule indicating the percentage of posts one must have on a given topic. For this transgression, I am truly sorry.

For many of us women's sports were not a big part of our experience at Ohio. When I was an undergrad women's sports were pretty much confined to field hockey, tennis, track, swimming and golf. Most of these weren't big spectator sports. Women's b-ball didn't start until my senior year; v-ball came well after I graduated. Add in the lack of media coverage through the years -- even today ESPN shows only top-25 scores for women, but every D1 score for men -- and the interest level has to suffer.

Maybe there should be a separate board here for women's b-ball; v-ball has its own. Having one board for b-ball makes it confusing regarding which team is being discussed.

When my then-future wife and I were in school there had been no women's sports at OHIO since sometime in the 1930s. It's interesting that there was female sports intercollegiate competition back as early as the 1890s and then it disappeared for several generations until after our graduation in 1968. My wife, however, was -- several years ago -- retroactively declared a varsity athlete and inducted into Varsity OHIO because she was a member of a synchronized swimming team called the Dolphins. It did require a great deal of athletic ability, so I think it was a reasonable gesture to make this retroactive move, but she did not really compete in intercollegiate competition. The level of female athletic competition now is greater than it's ever been, and I think supporting the good women's teams is something that is important, and that many of us (myself included) have not done enough of.

I think keeping it here will bring more attention to it. I don't think that it's all that confusing as it is.

I understand what you are saying. There are many levels of "support". As an alumnus, don't you feel some sort of pride or interest whenever Ohio is mentioned in the media, either academically or athletically even if you have no interest in story? You don't have shell out cash, attend the event or be the cheerheader of the sport. Just have pride in Ohio and morally support whatever is being done.

JSF, what I had in mind was attendance and rooting for the team. This year, for the first time in several years, my wife and I attended a women's basketball game. I think the last time might have been a Varsity OHIO event that she was invited to, so this was the first time on our own, so to speak, since the days of the double-headers. As another poster said, as alumni, my wife and I have pride in the institution and when a team is doing well, we think they deserve for more fans to come out and show that they are rooting for them to succeed. So I guess you might say in terms of women's sports we are kind of "fair weather" fans, but fair weather fans sometimes turn into more diehard fans.

Youngstown SU: 0-30, 10-21, 23-10

Bobcats get blitzed in the 2nd half at home and lose to 6-6 EMU. EMU was 4 for 7 from 3 in the 2nd half, while Ohio was 4 for 21. Oof.

Big and possibly final blow to any at-large hopes.

EMU was also 19 for 19 at the free throw line in the second half while the Bobcats were 5 of 6 for the game. Some critically bad calls at similarly critical times were impactful.
But, EMU played hard and inspired defense and hit 3's well above their average. The 2/3 zone negated almost all our inside game for the night. Overall, just an aberrant game all around for the Bobcats.
It puts more pressure on Saturday's Akron game.

Ohio should be the #1 seed in the MAC tournament. Bobcats are up a game on Ball State and hold the tiebreaker. Final four games for Ohio are not tough, including the three worst teams in MAC (two of them at home) after a home game against 8-6 Buffalo. To lose the top seed, Ohio would have to go 2-2 and Ball State win out against four teams all .500 or better.

Yes, in fact, if Ohio finishes first and wins the MAC tournament, the second-place team gets an automatic berth. Every conference gets represented:

A team offered an automatic berth by the WNIT shall be the team that is a.) the highest-finishing team in its conference’s regular-season standings, and b.) is not selected for the NCAA Tournament. A team that fulfills these qualities will earn the WNIT automatic berth for its respective conference, regardless of overall record.
