I saw a letter to the editor come across my Twitter feed this morning and hadn't seen any mention of it here (apologies if I missed it):

http://www.thepostathens.com/opinion/letter-phillips-miss...

So what say you BobcatAttack? Ok for Saul to be decked out in Badgers gear at an event during the Final Four? Big deal? Small deal? No deal?

I don't think it's a big deal. He has a long association with Ryan, who was his college coach at Wisconsin-Platteville. Also, the letter writer was big into exaggeration. While I've seen more A&M gear on the OHIO campus than I like, I've never seen a day when there were more students wearing their red than our green. It does stick out like a sore thumb sometimes, though. Saul might have worn an OHIO cap with his Wisconsin shirt, but overall I don't really think it's a big deal. Now, if Groce had worn OSU gear to root for the Evil Empire when he was coach here that would be another deal altogether!

I think it was fine by me. He was on Sirus XM in Ohio gear in the convention hall. I was going to post here last week as I saw him on Channel 4 and 8 in Indy in OHIO gear. Being from the WIsky tree he repped us really well while he still repped his roots.

My take is pretty much right on with what you guys are saying. When I read the letter it made it sound like he was at the game, decked out in Wiscy gear. When I clicked on the link in the article though and saw he was at a UW event my reaction was basically, "eh, who cares?"

IMO Freedman is dead wrong. I see NOTHING wrong with Coach Phillips wearing Wisconsin gear part of his time in Indy.

Remember also that Bo Ryan's son is on our staff.

I wore a Wisconsin hoody on championship Monday. I hope that wasn't "disloyal". Geez.

To his point referring to students wearing Buckeye gear: On multiple occasions I have conducted the OSU/Ohio apparel tally walking across campus. Even on football Saturdays, Bobcat gear wins in a landslide.

I'm actually a Badger fan (Dad went there), and I certainly have no issue with him supporting them, but I'd still say as the head coach he should've worn Ohio. I don't know, it's just a little weird to see the head coach of 1 school where the attire of another. Wouldn't it be weird for Groce to wear OSU gear in support of Matta?

But to be clear, I'm not mad at him, I don't really care, and I certainly wouldn't write a letter to the editor about it.

At one point, OSU gear on campus was a huge problem. That isn't the case any more. If you disagree, I would assume you haven't been on campus lately. Do some kids still wear OSU gear? Sure. WAY more are supporting Ohio University. I am sure there was a slight relapse this season with Ohio State's success in football. I'm not concerned that we are at risk of losing our gains in this department the last decade... Not if we take care of business on the field/court the next couple years... For the most part, the kids these days get it. The bigger problem is alumni from Freedman's era who do not get it.

It may be apostacy, but I'd like to think I've grown up enough that if John Groce had repped his mentor at some point, I'd effing deal with it.

I wonder if our Russell contract has provisions related to wearing competing branded gear. May not be a Wisconsin issue, but might be an adidas issue.

As long as it is not Evil Empire gear (TOSU), I don't care. (Half joking. OK, maybe less than half.)

Seriously, let the guy have some fun and be a fan.

Kind of reminds me of Clark Kellog wearing OU gear to the OU-Evil Empire game.

You don't think TOS breaks out his BC gear from time to time?

I've also been absorbing this data for a long time, in my classes and as I walk the campus. I have noted some changes over the years. For example, there was a brief time, not that many years ago, when Bucknut apparel was getting too much to take. But fortunately that period didn't last too long. As shabamon correctly points out, today it's hands down OHIO.

p.s. Just noticed the optimists similar text above.

It's not like what Akron did when the Suckeyes played for the national* championship. Their president tweeted out his support- https://twitter.com/PresScarborough/status/55476194207913...

and the folks that run the Facebook page for the Zips' athletic department posted this picture wishing the Suckeyes luck with hashtags #TeamOhio and #OhioPride

Compared to those crimes against humanity I find SP's transgression to be harmless.

It will be interesting to see come football season. Yes, I would think and hope the majority of stuff will be OU gear but I bet we'll see another uptick in osu stuff particularly if they come out ranked number 1 and on the cover of every magazine around.

So if Jeff Boals was our coach and OSU and his mentor was playing in the Final, how many of you would loose your cookies over this same question with a different logo?

Maybe seeing our coach in OSU gear would cause people to "loose" their grammar?

I just don't know how I feel about a coach of Ohio running into a coach of another school (Akron, Kent, Miami, etc.) and him not wearing Ohio gear. That guy could back to a recruit and say, "look, he doesn't even want to be there, why should you?"

Other than that, I get why he did and can't really get mad at him for it.

That reminds me of something JC said when thanking Ohio and the its fans after being hired at BC. j/k JC never thanked us or acknowledged his time here in any way after being hired.

Does the green turtleneck that he vowed to wear every time we played Miami to honor Charlie Coles count? I was thinking about how funny it was when we played Miami this season that he only got a chance to bust it out like 4 times.

This doesn't answer this question but the vast majority of coaches would say the only two circumstances where wearing another team's stuff o.k. would be if you were an alum of that school (Magic Johnson in Michigan State gear) or in this case the son of the coach. Having been an operations guy 11 years ago doesn't fall in either of those categories.

I remember attending an SIU golf tournament and banquet a few years back and the former coach showed up wearing Illinois stuff, his employer at the time, and was very well received.
