I'd look for him to get back in the Mac when a good job opens up again and rebuild his coaching reputation like Jim Christian did.
Not a good comp, Christian didn't need to rebuild his rep.
And he certainly didn't rebuild anything here - he left us a mess.
He did a good enough job to get an ACC head coaching job. And one bad year is hardly a mess.
I hate to rag on the guy but he did awful here. Pretty much just rode out the talent Groce gave him then left when it was gone. He returned a entire team that made the sweet 16 and couldn't even get them back to the tourney. I think a big share of the 10 win season we had this year has to fall on JC.
Everyone loves to point to "no NCAA tourney" for JC as a failure without pointing out the failures Groce had with the same group. Did Groce take us into the tourney, he sure did. But what was his best conference season in the MAC? Were we ever higher than a 4 seed in Cleveland with him? Yes, JC took the Sweet 16 bunch and failed to make the NCAA tourney...but he was also 14-2 in the MAC. So we couldn't beat Akron, that was it. How often we forget that under Groce we only beat Akron in Cleveland by a single point. It's not like we were head-and-shoulders better, talent wise, than Akron in EITHER year. JC loses the Sweet 16 crew in his final year and still won 25 games and went 11-7 in the MAC. How were Groce's MAC records, again? 7-9, 9-7, 11-5. Yea, he dominated the MAC schedule. (<--sarcasm)

That Sweet 16 was the worst thing that has happened to Ohio basketball in some ways. Unrealistic expectations went through the roof, our coach leaves to cash in on the success, and we still have unrealistic fans who act like no NCAA tourney run=failure. In my opinion, that's pretty stupid.

Good post. I do not believe we were more talented than Akron in 2013. Furthermore, though the games weren't often easy to watch, I was very proud of last year's 25 win season in terms of give-a-damn effort. Winning 25 games the year after graduating the program's best senior class while also dealing with injury and attrition issues all year, I feel, was an enormous accomplishment.

You're being overly dramatic. There's plenty of room to be disappointed with JC's tenure without being painted as unrealistic. Let's start with going 1-5 vs Akron. Those 5 losses included blowing double digit leads multiple times and being out-toughed in every game, losing in OT twice on our home court. And its very reasonable to be upset that he didn't get us back to the tournament when we had the lead at halftime in the MACC and end up getting embarrassed 39-17 in the second half.

Or how about JC's 3-7 record vs OOC opponents on the road with 5 of those losses by double digits? The one thing JC did better than Groce was he avoided losing to teams he shouldn't lose to, mostly.

OK, OOC road records. Not including neutral site games because they aren't true road games, Groce was 1-4, 2-3, 1-1, and 5-1 respectively in his tenure here in OOC road games. 9-9, with only one year of a winning record in OOC road games. And that 5-1 season was against the murderers row of Marshall, Oakland, Portland, Wright St, and Northern Iowa (the only impressive win of the bunch). There was a 35 point loss to Louisville in there, losses to Delaware, Marshall, Tulsa, a 25 point loss to Pitt...so yeah, Groce was great in OOC road games. For one year against extremely light competition.
