He is a douche. 1st class/\
Completely seconded. It's amazing to me that someone with so little of a clue can be put in charge of social media for a college athletic conference in this day/age.

The MAC's Assistant Commissioner of Communications and Social Media has posted 33 items to his official MAC social media account in the last 3 days, 6 of those posts were regarding the MAC. The other 27 were mostly about the Cavs, the Browns, the Indians and the Country Music Awards.

I'll say it again, it is literally his job to use social media for the purpose of promoting the MAC. Not the Cleveland area pro teams.

Kinda time to replace him. Can't really walk it back from where he is. He is not pro MAC as much as he is pro Cleveland (which may in it's own way be a redundancy). He does not have the chops for the job. Seems like someone who actually understands the value of marketing and social media with a passing fancy to build the MAC brand would be an infinitely better choice at this point.

It's generally a good idea to perform one's job with some dedication to one's basic job duties and to keep irrelevancies distinctly apart.

I said it when JSF was having a spat with him in March about the social media silence about the Ohio Women's NCAA Tournament game:

The guy is basically an intern who they've kept around for the past 8 years. He doesn't understand the social media space. He doesn't understand simple marketing strategies. Worst of all he gets under the skin of most of the fanbases and responds to criticism like a petulant child.

This is an athletic conference made up of member institutions and affiliates with some decent sports marketing programs. You're telling me you couldn't find someone who wants that job, in a similar salary band, who could create value in that role instead of purely antagonizing everyone?

an update since last night- 1 post about Women's Golf Championship and 2 retweets about Shannon Evans transferring, all before 9am. Since then, 10 straight posts about the Browns and the Cavs. His last post on his personal twitter account was 4/17.

Phil Burwell
@PBurwellMAC

Director of Media Relations for the Mid-American Conference

Seems like he is much better at filling his personal timeline with pertinent tweets

Jeremy Guy
@JGuyMAC

Looking for some #MACtion? You've come to the right place! Assistant Commissioner/Communications & Social Media at @MACSports. Just a kid from Chardon, Ohio.

Seems like both tie themselves to the MAC and have their titles on their profile. While Burwell makes his MAC related page all about the MAC, JGuy clearly does not have that same dedication and singular bent. I would follow Burwell all day long for news of the MAC and kick Guy to the curb

Top of Burwells' page just happend to have great content

This right here is what drives me nuts. He actually has a personal account and yet still uses his conference account to tweet mostly about things that have nothing to do with the conference. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't he get suspended a year or so ago for misconduct on Twitter, which led to the creation of a personal account in the first place?

At any rate, I finally muted him last night. As someone who is really into MAC basketball and has a passing interest in MAC football, I have zero use for his tweets again until November, especially when half of them are just complaining about the lack of crowd noise at Cavs playoff games. Sweet hot takes, bro.

The reason he uses his MAC twitter account to tweet ridiculous personal stuff (i.e. Cleveland-based sports nonsense) is because of this:

6,204 followers.

His absurd viewpoints on non-MAC issues gets out to more folks than his personal account (which by the looks of things no longer even exists)

Self-serving....that's all it is. Feeds his ego that 6k+ care what he has to say...

I've met him a few times....seems nice. But what's been said is exactly right, he's in over his head. Swimming in the deep end.

This league is at a major crossroads....and in trouble of falling into irrelevance. It would be nice if our social media person understood that and dedicated their time to promoting the league and trying to find ways for it to stay relevant and even grow. Wins on the field/court do wonders for the brand, but marketing it is also a huge part....and this guy just isn't getting it done.

I'd argue that the league is very close to potentially breaking through...if it were sold the right way. Men's hoops has taken steps forward in recent years, and football continues to get a couple nice wins every September. It needs to be sold and marketed better from the top down than it is now. Sell the league to people who actually want to watch college athletics, not nearly pro-sports like nearby rival leagues. Of course getting back on a better regional TV deal could go a long way with that.

In his defense, I think there are some things he's done well. Getting over 6K followers is an accomplishment in and of itself. He probably should get some of the credit for pushing the #MACtion hashtag to the point it became a thing.

I don't have an opinion on his overall job performance either way, I just want to see the personal communications limited to his personal account.

Spencer Hall is one of the best follows on Twitter. He cracks me up during fall football Saturdays, especially when Florida is playing. I'll definitely give him the credit for #MACtion. Another great follow is Deadspin's Drew Magary.

"I just want to see the personal communications limited to his personal account."

For me, this is the real point specifically aimed at him. I don't want to read about the Browns, Cavs, and Indians when I'm trying to learn about what's happening in the MAC.

15 of his previous 18 tweets had been fanboy posts for the Cavs. I'm guessing he didn't suddenly decide ton make a change on his own. Hope he got an ear full.

Given that the MAC Director of Media Relations just left for a similar title at CARTHAGE COLLEGE, the MAC probably gets what it pays for.

This is amusing to follow. He again made reference to his personal account last night, encouraging people to talk Cavs with him on there. He proceeded to go fan boy on both accounts and again deleted the tweet referencing the personal account. I'm not even sure the point of him having two accounts.
