Starting 5 - Setty, Harley, Simmons, Kaminski, Campbell. Setty player of the game. Hustle as expected. Took the ball end to end several times. Some nice footwork/moves at the hoop/taking to the hoop.

Simmons had several nice assists - a couple better than any seen all last year. He also likes to find a seam and go to the hoop. Watching him progress is going to be fun. Kaminski was cold shooting today - but he contributed on D pretty good.

Campbell solid. Harley looked pretty good. Mompremier some energetic minutes. Nothing spectacular from the Frosh - most of them got minutes - most Block I think and not unexpected.

IN Tech has some athletes, and some shooters - but our size and speed on D was too much for them. We had a Lot of blocked shots.

Most of the rebounds we lost were hard off the rim and not near the basket. Shooting was cold.

Great crowd for first exhibition game after a 10 win season.

Giving up 16 offensive rebounds to Tech, ouch!
This is not good. Don't care how the ball was bouncing. Rebounding is hustle. Confident Saul will work on it.

Kind of expected that...my friends who know the team and compete against them talked to me Thursday extolling the virtues of the 2 6'8 kids that had transferred in....their words were "it will be a good test for OHIO as those 2 will make it interesting if OU does not bring their game". They felt the big kids were a steal for Tech and would be a factor this year to get Coach Peckinpaugh's team a favorable record and perhaps a tourney berth. Not surprised we gave up that many OB's to Tech. Coach was a tenacious rebounder and teaches that skill very well. I remember him boxing out Oden and having the big fella clamoring over the 6'4 redhead falling and injuring the wrist that ultimately sidelined the much heralded frosh at tO$U. I think I have a pic but we are not able to post those anymore.

Tech's starting five were all transfers from other programs. For me, this was a half-century flashback of sorts.

I sit 6 rows up on the aisle right behind the coaches' end of the bench so from there you get a pretty good view of what is going on on the bench and on the court. Granted it was only one game but I liked the fact that I saw a team playing together today.

Biggest concern was missed block out assignments. That will come with additional training and time on the court together. The progress that Setty showed made me smile. The guy has gone from a completely out of control awkward kid to a player with some developed moves and good footwork. He is definitely a starter this year along with Tony and Kiminski up front. Simmons reminded me a bit of Robert Tatum, solid build, controlled performance and good shooting form. At 6'5", Gollon will be a nice backup ala Paul Baron - same sort of on court attitude.

It was a fun day in the Convo after a train wreck last year. A few non-basketball observations - the new seats look very nice but make the upper reaches of the Convo appear very dark. This is the best dance team I've seen in quite some time. And finally, was the ozone on strike yesterday?

I recently read a biography of John Wooden. His opinion: boxing out is not relevenat. Instead he preferred quickness to reach rebounds first.

The latter somewhat necessarily involves the former as part of going for the ball is edging other players out.

I guess what I was saying Monroe is that we didn't do the best job of positioning to be able to go after the balls quicker which is kind of what Wooden was saying. Sean Stonerook was the master of that at OU.

And one other very important thing - it looks like stand for defense is gone. Hallelujah!

i agree with a lot of Alan's thoughts on Setty, O Zone (or lack of), and the darkness of the upper reaches. I do think the new seats make the old girl look better though.

My only real team concerns from yesterday were rebounding and the inability to get freshmen more PT.

Individual player thoughts of note:

-I won't go on about Simmons, other than to say, I'm really glad to be able to see 3 years of a player like him. It's gonna be fun!

-I have concerns about Harley. He shows flashes, but doesn't seem terribly effective in the time he's in there.
-I hope that Laster works his way to a little more PT than yesterday.
-I was really glad to see Wadley look very fit and effective yesterday. I hope it lasts all year. He'll make some plays for us as long as he's healthy.
-I'm hopeful we'll eventually see Dartis, Block, and Gollon develop a little more as the year goes on. They're key to the three years that follow this season if we're going to continue on the path back to being a top 3-4 MAC program.
-I like what I see physically from Doug Taylor. Fella is a big guy! I'm hoping Dozier develops into the player I read about - the stretch 4, much like Kenny. Looks thin and young right now.

I've said it to a few in conversation. My only real expectations of this bunch are to win more games than they lose, and have shown improvement by the time we get to about Feb 1st. I'm looking forward to watching a team develop over a couple years again.

A couple of quick thoughts that I have that haven't been mentioned (as much):

1) Did anyone else notice the TO numbers? We had just 6. I like that number.

2) The 3pt shooting was off, I don't think that will remain as bad as it was on Sat. Had we hit a few more it would have been more of a comfy win.

3) We did hold them to under 30% from the field.

4) Wadley earned more PT in my mind, thought he looked very active and effective.

5) Jaaron forced it a little at times in the second half, but I love that we have a pass-first PG for the first time in a while. And did he even attempt a 3pt FG? 7 assists/1 TO, I can get used to that.

This is excellent news. Stand enthusiastically until the other team scores, then meekly sit when they do -- it made no sense.

That Jaaron dish to Wadly at 1:49 is sick. Going to be exciting watching him thread the needle like this all year.

The earlier no-look pass to Laster under the rim was equally as good if not better. But it wasn't in the video.

Like all the talk and focus on D in the recap vid. It was apparent at the game. This team may be ahead of the "gelling" and "focus" curve on D for this early in the season. I had some concerns about how the D would be TY - especially early - as several others on here have posted. I am optimistic. FGCU will surely be more of a test - looking forward to being at the game!

The D is going to determine how good we are. I think offensively we will be better than last year but unless we can get stops, something we were dreadful a year ago, it won't matter.

Now that you mention D, I seem to recall that last year's team had trouble limiting guards/wings from getting penetration. I didn't really watch for that at the tech game last week, but I'm curious to see how they do with it.
