A great SP quote in the post game - "They have nine seniors, we have one. When those guys are selling car insurance, we'll be winning championships."

Indiana St./Norfolk St. play tonight at 8:30 ET.

I'm guessing Saturday gets streamed just like today?

My takeaway is this....

I really thought after watching Ohio struggle vs. TSU....that going away from Athens to the distractions of V.I. and facing a team like Tulsa (that just beat #9 Wichita by 10).....that this was going to be an ass-whooping.

So to see Ohio play well for 30 of the 40 minutes was encouraging. The last 10 minutes....ummmm....a bit disturbing to say the least.

But I guess it's better to see Ohio get up 19 and blow it than to go down there and get drummed all day by Tulsa.

Today proved that Ohio is capable. Not sure we would've got that feeling had they lost by 15 and never been in it.

Yes...blowing a 19-pt lead in the final 11+ minutes is brutal.

But still some positives to takeaway....

Simmons is good....but he wilted under the pressure late...too many turnovers and trying to do it himself. He's going to need some help handling the ball and handling the game.

Kaminski showed the stroke we all knew he had....but he was kind of invisible late. He's going to need to assert himself as a go-to-guy late to help Simmons handle the load.

The freshman stumbled a bit...but I like what I saw from Dartis again today. Taylor appears to be coming along slowly.

The most frustrating thing (other than blowing the 19pt lead) was Campbell inability to stay on the floor.....again! He is a fouling machine. I know the refs were whistle-happy today...but this is three games in a row where's he's had at least 4 fouls and been forced to sit with foul trouble. He has to find a way to stay on the floor and play defense without fouling. He's just too good to play 20 mins a game.

Still can salvage a couple wins on this trip and head home with some momentum. Very anxious to see how this young/inexperienced team bounces back from this disappointment. That will be as interesting as anything to watch vs. Norfolk/Sycs on Saturday.

Didn't see it. But from the recap and the comments here, I'm okay with it. Very young team that played very well for a while against a tough opponent.

Simmons was ALL OVER IT from the box score stats. The other freshmen, not so much.

I gather that Saul was reasonably happy, saw that this group has some talent. I'm sure that he's aware of the holes (point guard..etc).

This will be a fun year. Seems, from a distance, like a likable bunch with some talent. And coachable--right?

50-70% into this season, I think most of us will like this team a lot.

Arkley is getting trolled on Twitter by Tulsa fans who are offended,!OFFENDED!, by SP's remarks. They are hilariously misguided. A couple of my favs-

And that loser will not start here until 930 at the earliest. A short night for them. I like out chances.

I watched some of the IUPUI victory over Indiana State last weekend. If it is Indiana State we will face tomorrow, they are beatable.

Florida State and DePaul lost today so does that mean one of those two will be our 3rd opponent?

Yes.
Indiana State and NS are way more deliberate, slow paced teams. Norfolk state plays very much an inside game. Indiana state better outside shooters so far.

I was surprised that as tight as the refs were calling this game, they swallowed their whistles in the last minute or so. We had a couple of offensive possessions that would've had defensive fouls called in the other 39 minutes but were no-calls. Wonder if they saw the other teams getting impatient in the tunnels and thought they should move the game along.

I think we had just one FG in the last ten minutes. Not so much from poor shooting but from tight D by Tulsa.

It'll be interesting to see how our young team responds to this loss in just 24 hours.

I was reading their board during the game and they are a bunch of tools. Tons of stuff along the lines of "Ohio is one of the worst teams in the country. No way should we be losing to these guys". Like many of the fanbases around the country they have a seriously inflated opinion of their standing in the national hierarchy.

always have Van. When we made that trip to Tulsa I had a great time with Joe McK but I found their fans to be total boors.

Looks like the Sycamores gonna take this one.

Borna, Tulsa looks quite a bit better to me than Indiana State, but i sure don't anything about BB like you do. I only saw the first half of the ISU-NS game, but they were not terribly impressive in any phase of the game. Did you like what you saw with them?

Perimeterpost....Thanks for posting Saul's after game quote.

I wanted to chime in as well

WOW, I find this quote some what unprofessional. No need to make a statement like this. Now I am not a Tulsa fan but I was still disappointed by this quote. Certainly, Saul was quite upset with how we lost but to make such a disparaging comment about the other team was, IMHO, uncalled for.

Saul need to mature a little , take a lesson from Frank.
I wonder if Schaus will have a few words with him?

After posting my comments I read this from the Arkley blog at Messenger.com

Addition — At 7:06 p.m., Phillips released the following statement. He indicated he would not be addressing the matter any further.

“To clarify, I was just trying to underscore that their guys are seniors and ours are underclassmen, and I also stated that they are clearly an at-large team if they don’t win their conference. I certainly didn’t mean to imply that their guys won’t have pro careers, but I was just merely trying to underscore that they have a senior-laden team, which I have all the respect in the world for.”

It would be my guess that either he realized his comments were inappropriate or someone recommended that he "CLARIFY" his comments.

I thought Simmons played really well most of the game, but looked exhausted toward the end. 38 minutes may be too much for a player who has to carry so much for his team. I'm excited for this team going forward.

Huge Saul fan but I thought his comments probably warranted a "Stay Classy" thread.

Are you kidding? What an over sensitive world we live in today. He was clearly trying to emphasize the youth on our team. Can everyone just relax, take a deep breath, and stop looking for a reason to feel disrespected? Really.

You really have to be looking for something to be offended by to be offended by SP's comment. It should be clear that he is saying- when these seniors are working in the real world these freshmen will still be in college. The use of "insurance salesman" is just a random use of an everyday, average job in the real world. Could have been any profession. If you read that and think " how dare he assume that all of these amazing college athletes won't all be professional athletes in a few years" then you are just trying to hard.

For added context, although none is needed, here is the full quote-

"Twenty-three turnovers. Twenty-three. That’s how it got away.

That just can’t happen. And especially against a good team. What’s sad is we put ourselves in position to get a really good win. I don’t think people around, anywhere, know how good this Tulsa team is.

I watched them kick Wichita State’s butt the other day. They’re good. They’re going to be an at-large type team if they don’t win their league.

You look back, the two things that went wrong: we didn’t take care of the ball and they got out in transition, and we couldn’t play without fouling. Although they had a hard time playing without fouling too.

“Disappointing, disappointing. They have nine seniors, we got one. When those guys are selling car insurance, we’ll be winning championships, so. When their guys are selling car insurance, we’ll be winning championships.

We got to learn from it, we got to get better."

there is no insult, explicit or implied. The reason SP released a clarifying message is because the beat rider for Tulsa threw a hissy fit and reached out to our administration for a quote from Saul.

Watched the game and my take...our guys were totally gassed at the end of the game. Tulsa's "D" in last 10 minutes reminded me of Nolan Richardson's Arkansas teams and 40 minutes of hell. Hopefully, conditioning improves because it led to at least 5-7 turnovers over the last 7 minutes.

Saul better get inside Campbell's head and explain the difference between a good foul and a bad foul. Why does he continue to get 3 fouls in the first ten minutes of every game? We can't beat TOP 50 teams with Campbell on the bench.

I'd also like to see Treg do less driving to the basket. He's constantly out of control which leads to a travel or a charge.

Other than that....very pleased. If we can somehow take these last 2 games on island, it's going to keep momentum moving forward. With that said, next year's team is going to be scary, scary good.

I meant ISU was going to take the game I was watching last night. I think we should match up well with ISU....(the team I always use when folks say
your son played at Ohio State?" to which I reply "do you call that place in Terra Haute, Indiana?") I do think Tulsa is a lot better than the Sycamores especially after ISU lost a few key peices last year....never count Coach out though, he is pretty good and the kids they have are competitors. It will be a good game. BBIQ is always competitive.

EDIT. so dumb. Thinking ISU won and we would play not thinking we play the LOSER. I am not wired that way....
