Cleveland State announced a partnership with the Cavs today. As part of the deal, CSU will play 5 games at the Q this season, including Dec. 12 vs Ohio.

CSU's president is pretty harsh on what is a perfectly nice arena in the article linked below. It's been a money loser for a lot of reasons, not least of which is apathy toward a middling team in a mediocre mid-major conference. Their biggest problem is an utter lack of local support more than anything else. The rest of the school has been transforming nicely from an open-admissions commuter school into a residential urban university. The hoops program has potential, but I doubt this move (and slamming its own very nice - albeit empty - arena) is going to help at all.

Billy, I bet if we got UC in the Convo the crowd would be bigger than any OAC draw including Marietta.

Two things:
1. It's interesting to me that part of this partnership involves the Cavs managing events at the Wolstein Center. It's not the first time CSU has turned to an outside partner to try to bring more business to their arena.

This is from two years ago, although the problems discussed then are still very relevant for the university today:
http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2013/09/clevelan...

2. I'd love to see this give the CSU basketball program a shot in the arm, but the quotes from today's press conference really sound like wishful thinking at best. Are students suddenly going to start going to more games because they're at the Q instead of Wolstein? Maybe once for the novelty of it, but that won't last long. And will high-major programs really start scheduling games vs CSU because the games won't be "on Cleveland State's home court"? Nah.

The Cleveland State program has been near the top of the Horizon for the last several years. The Horizon itself is a darn good mid major league. I think the product is a lot better than some of you are saying. I'll admit the attendance hasn't been very good there.

We're a big question mark. A 10 win season would not surprise me and a 20 win season wouldn't either. Our most productive players last year were all seniors, each coming from different backgrounds (one 4-year player, one D-1 transfer, and one JUCO transfer) and they each experienced three different head coaches in their careers. Chemistry just wasn't present. This year we will be counting on a number of new faces. We will need a few freshman to play meaningful minutes and we have two well-regarded transfers becoming eligible - a PG from Houston and a big from Michigan State. We have talent and potential, but with only one senior, I think we are a year away.
Good take. I'm glad they are going to this Virgin Islands tournament -- should provide some good chemistry time during the winter in a nice island location. Then, they get back to the Convo for what will be a rockin' game vs. Marshall. Hope they have fun in VI, but realize that they need to take care of business at home.

The Lake Erie Monsters just released their schedule and they have a game at the Q on 12/12 at 7:30pm.

If it is true about Ohio playing at the Q, it will most likely be a 12pm tip off

I was in contact with 4 separate Bobcat fans/alums friends from Cleveland today who all said they were in - and all will be bringing other friends and family! This will be fun.

The full schedule will be released at 2PM. I predict that we will NOT be hosting Akron on a Saturday, once again.

Conference schedule is out on the MAC website. To no one's surprise, the home game vs. Akron is on a weeknight (Tuesday, Feb. 2), but what is interesting is that for the first time in a while, the game at the JAR is on a weeknight too (Tuesday, March 1).

Based on an early look, one thing I find curious is the lack of December Saturday home games.

Looks like just one Saturday home game in the non-conference slate. Overall, the non-con is unsexy. Yeah, let's call Arkansas Pine Bluff again.

Aside from no Akron Saturday home date, the conference schedule is fantastic. Five home Saturday games including Miami, Kent, and Buffalo. Plus, it appears that there shouldn't be any games, except maybe that first Ball State game, while students are away on winter or spring breaks.

The Miami game in Oxford has to be on 3/4 and just not listed. Akron's schedule has them playing Kent that day to end the season.

EDIT: Confirmed on the MAC Website.

No expert, but man that is a bad out of conference schedule. The team is young so maybe it's appropriate coming off a 10 win season.

Good catch. I missed that somehow. I still find December's schedule at home to be odd with no Saturday's.

In a way, I disagree. The holiday tournament should have at least two good RPI games.

Like I said, I'm not an expert , but no head turners in that group. I don't have season tickets like many of you have, so if you're happy I'm all right with that.

RE: OOC schedule, it depends on what your goals are for the team.

For them to gel on a nice road trip/tourney? Check

To get some experience/confidence with some lower-tier teams? Check

To play in front of a big crowd with a rowdy rival? Check

Get alums in other markets to come to an OOC game? Check, in Cleveland (I always like when they can schedule games in big alum markets)

I think we get caught up in the RPI, which will not really impact at-large bids for the big dance as the MAC is highly unlikely to get two bids.
