I get the security issue. My complaint is that the "outer ring" of the Convo is poorly lit and with the snow and freezing temps we've had in the last month or so it is an accident and a lawsuit waiting to happen. If indeed the powers-that-be are going to make this the "new norm" then additional lighting needs to be put in place immediately. If that means making arrangements for generator lighting on game nights, then so be it. The only lighting available now is indirect lighting from either the parking lots or the Convo itself...nothing for that outer ring.

AGREED. And that's kind of my argument - if safety is the motivator for this change, then 1) show it by making those walkways better, 2) send some semblance of an explanation as to why they're doing this.

And third, Tell us about the future use of solar technology to power the new turbo hand dryers, state of the art concessions stands, along with the 4k Ultra HD scoreboard we're anticipating. ;)
Totally agree. I'm gonna figure out how to find handicap parking and ingress. Kind of nervous about the walk around to get in. Butler was a nightmare the other night. Happy it's nice and warm. Life changes, got to adjust and plan ahead.

If prefer dysons but Xcel will work http://www.exceldryer.com /
Tom - the handicap parking is the lot right behind the Convo. Enter off of Shafer Street right across from tailgate park. If you go in the gate where visiting team buses back up to, you should be able to walk right in on floor level.

Student entrance was fine to go in last night. Definitely encourage folks to do that if they don't wish to walk all the way around the Convo. Starting to see more and more "old folks" take advantage of it.

This is actually funny. I do love good satire, even if it is directed at me. I don't like mean-spirited jabs. It's very easy to tell the difference.

I'm sorry, I can't drop it...the barricades are stupid. Admittedly, I am a hater of overreacting and overdoing pretty much anything (remember who was super pissed off when they cancelled the game because someone off campus robbed someone for $5 10 hours before gametime?). But every game I've seen so many people get shunned around and them get annoyed. Those kind of things damage the experience and leave a bad taste in people's mouth. I saw a 110 member holding a trombone, a Mom holding an infant, an elderly couple that probably took 20 minutes to walk to the other side of the building...all shunned, just last night.

Why not just have the guards standing by the barriers just stand by the doors? Then ISIS' evil plan to destroy the Convo can be spoiled just the same. There are already multiple yellow-shirt guys standing just inside the doors as well. Between all of them we could have enough manpower to have a man per 2 doors.

The customer experience you reference is my A number 1 argument it needs fixed from the current method. It just comes across as obnoxious and tacky if you ask me. Did it harm my experience last night? No. But obviously it did for at least the people Andrew saw. That can't be the way Ohio University would want to be perceived. If I were them, I'd sort it out before the last 3 home games, 2 of which will likely be the highest attended games of the season.

So here's my suggestion. Pick up the phone and call Jim. Two weeks ago today, I was scheduled to drive to Charlottesville from Akron. I didn't make reservations because I wasn't sure I could get out of Athens before the snow hit. Once I crossed the Ohio River, I saw that I was in the clear and kept driving and over the next 4 hours tried to call the hotel that I wanted to stay at only to listen to a recorded "we'll be right with you" for 6 minutes each time. I never did get through so I called another hotel and got a reservation. Yesterday I called the general manager the first hotel to share the story. He wasn't aware of the problem and thanked me for bringing it to his attention.

The same thing might apply here - Jim may not know the problem that this policy is creating. Pick up the phone and call him. That's the only way things will improve.

And here I was hoping he was reading this board religiously, taking notes on how he should do his job better...

+1

But let me point out that this is not Jim's policy; it's the policy of the chief of OUPD. However, Jim certainly is in a position to talk to OUPD and have them make adjustments in the policy. The one thing, as I understand it, that is probably not negotiable is allowing parking, as the used to do, to the highest paying customers under the Convo. About two years ago, I was told, that Homeland Security directly identified that as a major security risk. Unfortunately, I can understand why.

It may not be Jim's policy but from a customer service standpoint, he and the police chief can train those who man the barricades to handle things in a more appropriate manner. Also, as I posted earlier, those with a hardship or handicap, can be directed through the gate that visiting teams enter/exit. The point of my post was not to change the policy but to make sure that Jim and others are aware of the customer service issues associated with the new security measures.

Any idea why this is only for men's games? Not wrestling, VB, WBB, Football or any other event?

I can guarantee this is the OUPD chief. He has not won many friends since coming to Athens, from what I've heard. Probably doesn't help that he came from that other school over in Oxford!!

I wrote this off....but like Ruck ....it has remained a festering wound and just erupted with so much pus emenating forth....

Got to the convo and noted the barrier to parking underneath...the nice gent directed us to the back to after taking a right at the light. Went to the handicapped parking put on my brace and began to walk up the hill to the front of the arena as directed. Going up the incline and to the barrier I slipped twice on ice patches. At the barrier I asked the gentleman if I could go up under the overhand to traverse the route to the front. NOOOO. So i started down the slight incline to the front and landed on my ass after I hit another area of melted water that had froze. He directed me to go the other way to the back entrance you alluded to....got inside and was asked for tix. I told them they were up front at will call....was told I would have to go out and walk around. I objected explaining I had no desire to land on my ass again... and was then told they would let me go up the elevator to the concourse then tried to locate the key then had trouble getting it to work. Got off the elevator then walked the entire way around the front to the will call window to sign for my tics. Took a leisurely route back to section 110 and imagined what it must be like for someone who is more disabled or less motivated than I to get to an Ohio game.

It is something that needs to be re evaluated and figure out if there is a better situation.

Sorry to hear about your problems with the new security measures, Tom. I agree that there has got to be a better way that would be equally secure.
