Why are the barriers blocking all the ramps other than the main entrance? Security issue? Not a huge deal to start the game because we all have to enter from that was anyway, but it kinda sucks at the end when you park near Wren. Not a huge deal...Just wondering why, all of the sudden, they've blocked off the ramps?

They need all entrances secure for the top-secret installation of Xlerator hand dryers. It's going to be a Christmas miracle!

I asked one of the yellow coats on my way into the Convo from parking in the blue lot behind the Convo. He said it was "enhanced security measures." I hope they change these before the students come back because anything that makes it harder for students to get in will discourage student participation.

I asked one too..He, more or less, said the same thing. Wanted all foot traffic coming in from the same direction. Noticed heavy police force Tuesday night with dogs..Didn't see as much last night. I agree. Hopefully it won't discourage students from coming to watch.

If it makes it less likely that I die in the Convo, I'm ok with it.

Dumb, very dumb. Probably here to stay, and going to be miserable when the big crowds start up.

I don't know, might not be such a bad place to go?

Miserable is a relative concept. An inconvenience getting in and out of a sporting event doesn't approach miserable.

So - let's bunch 'em all up on one ramp and crowded more tightly around couple entrance doors before anyone goes through security - wtf? Is there an IQ requirement for those security decision level jobs? Or just good sales skills......

OUPD Chief who has a solid history and is a well respected law enforcement officer. He is very concerned with keeping the campus community safe.

Real hard to get to the bottom of something, especially when it's published.

thanks for the link....those of us who live out of town but attend functions in Athens appreciate those links as we have our own local news to keep up with but do not have time to comb through the Athens news to find things that may affect our visit. Not sure why you have to be so confrontational but Many of us appreciate the "getting to the bottom of things".... glad to see Danny at least stimulating the sharing of info.

So does anyone know exactly what about this move makes it safer?

That was my question - if the plan is to bunch more people up together into less entrance areas BEFORE anyone goes through security - well.........

However well intended these measures are, they are more than an inconvenience. They force us to live in a state of apprehension if not fear. While I try to be alert and aware of my surroundings, I refuse to live in fear.

I, too, refuse to live in fear but I don't mind attempts at security measures. Admittedly, some measures seem silly or over the top. Some measures seem kind of lame, but I find it hard to take umbrage with those attempting to protect us. I am angry and frustrated that there is a need for such measures. I would rather stroll casually into the Convo or where ever else I going for some leisure and recreation without having to wait in line and be subjected to some kind of search. Those measures won't force me to live in fear. The reason those measures exist are scary and to do nothing at all would be more of a reason to live in fear.

I don't wish to argue about personal perspectives but simply felt compelled to share mine.

I don't know, but my assumption is that the large number of doors all along the Convo concourse make it easy for someone to pop one open for others with nefarious purposes. That's definitely a risk. Having the outer concourse clear of most traffic makes it easier to monitor any activity via direct visual observation and/or cameras.

But for this to be effective, then they'd have to keep this monitored 24/7 on non-game days. To me, there has to be a better way than making your most important patrons, the Bobcat Club and season ticket holders, walk the longest way possible around The Convo to go in the front door. Why not just station the guys in yellow inside the doors to keep someone from opening one for someone on the outside? Or, lock all but a couple of them until the game has started? At least if its raining it gives the patrons the cover of that overhang.

And, I observed a resident student of The Convo getting hassled by security at the last home game in a less than cordial way to show his Student ID.

Bottom line for me: The intent is good, for sure, but the execution of it is not customer friendly in any way in my opinion. At least if they're gonna do it, they could bother to send a briefing to those who buy tickets.

(They haven't that I'm aware of. Did I miss something?)

I get the security issue. My complaint is that the "outer ring" of the Convo is poorly lit and with the snow and freezing temps we've had in the last month or so it is an accident and a lawsuit waiting to happen. If indeed the powers-that-be are going to make this the "new norm" then additional lighting needs to be put in place immediately. If that means making arrangements for generator lighting on game nights, then so be it. The only lighting available now is indirect lighting from either the parking lots or the Convo itself...nothing for that outer ring.

I think we can have all the lighting we need once we complete the engineering study to determine if the roof can support solar panels!

AGREED. And that's kind of my argument - if safety is the motivator for this change, then 1) show it by making those walkways better, 2) send some semblance of an explanation as to why they're doing this.

And third, Tell us about the future use of solar technology to power the new turbo hand dryers, state of the art concessions stands, along with the 4k Ultra HD scoreboard we're anticipating. ;)
