In the Convo Jan 12 Cats had a just awful night. Tone, Simmons, and Setty fouled out. BG 22-OU 12 FT's. OU 14 TO's. Out RB'd BG 42-OU 32. Only 8 TTL team assists. BG 26-OU 16 in the paint. Horrible H2.

I think a lot of the issues we had in that game were issues all early season and they all compounded together in one game that night. I think we have improvements across all of these through the season. But I still expect a close game. i think this really depends on a solid game from Tone, Simmons, and a few well timed 3's from KK, Jordy, Block, and maybe even one from Setty.......

I think Saul Ball is in full swing - and I would not be totally surprised if we dominate.
Of all the losses and meltdowns we had early I look at that loss still with an angry heart. I know we squandered a huge lead and BG deserves credit for coming back but I feel like the officials handed them the win with that 10-point possession. I have watched intently through the year at other games in major and minor conferences when players spill into the opposing team's bench. I have noticed two things: their teammates coming to their rescue AND the opposing team helping them up. I still feel, and will stick by it, that BG had a few guys on the bench who were purposely stepping on Jaaron and even keeping his teammates from getting to him. We would have been down nine after the 4-point play but come on, being down 15 instead of 9 was huge at that point.

I probably said five times after the fact that the whole thing is avoided by 1 or 2 BG folks on that bench helping up Jaaron while he's at their feet. Not that I consider that event to be indicative of their general sportsmanship, but that specific moment was very poor sportsmanship in my book. Players end up in the opponents bench all the time. Most of the time the opposing team's bench helps a guy up.

How the officials handled that, and the remainder of the second half of that game were also pretty bad. OUr guys didn't play well in that second half, and they may likely have lost without that 10 point swing from that incident. It still seemed like they also were playing 6 (or 7, or 8) against five for the last part of that half.

So, exact revenge. Bring chip on shoulder so we overcome the troubles we've historically had at BG.

People are still pissing and moaning about that call?! And for the 100th time, the refs didn't hand them 10 points. And it wasn't 10 points either. Simmons fouled their guy on a three and he made it. He also made the free throw he earned on that foul. How are those points handed to them by the ref?? They also made another shot gaining possession after the technical free throws. So yeah, they were awarded free throws, so if you wanna keep belly aching over those free throws so be it. But if you're going to, at least recognized the made three and first free throw for what they were, points earned m, and not given. Otherwise, it's time to get over it and move on already people.

Hey coach, when KK is a zero and Setty getting mauled by Parker, why not have Campbell and Taylor on the floor and let Setty take KK's place?

BGSU, nice job taking the ball to the hole and finishing.

We just cannot defend long and athletic teams. And Saul needs to look at KK vs Block. Gavin coming off of two amazing passing AND scoring games and KK is left coming off a concussion to gun!!! Poor job.

Have you noticed the losing streak they're on? I think BG has only won once since beating Ohio a month and a half ago.
The funny thing about streaks...

Road game against a team that for whatever god-forsaken reason has owned Ohio lately. If we're a contender, we take care of business. but eventually BG will break through with one of their performances that they only ever seem to manage against us.
Damnit I hate being right.

Horrible defense in the second half for Ohio. We gave up 51 second half points to a team that isn't a good offensive team. Terrible breakdowns. How many times can a team walk down the lane and dunk the ball on you until someone steps in and plants the guy on his ass. This team panics at times and it takes better mental toughness to finish teams kind of games. BGSU got into our heads again. We absolutely gave this game away. Just like the first game. Bobcats were fortunate the other leaders also stumbled including Akron losing to Miami.

As if there were any doubt but yep, the MAC will definitely be a one bid league to the Big Dance again this year.

Edit: but hey, there's no reason that one team can't be Ohio!

So many troubling things come from tonight.

KK was feeling some serious rust. Saul even admitted sticking with him too long. Block only played 10 mins. Mistake there.

Where was the fire...energy...passion? Didn't see it...at all. Even when they jumped up by 10, they were still getting abused on glass by BG. Had all kinds of chances to bury a team that A) embarrassed them on their home floor B) lost 7 straight C) were 1-6 at home in MAC

That was not a "playing for a championship" type of effort. And with what was on the line and in game 27 and with opponent, that's a head scratcher. Saul is 0-4 vs BG.

Outrebounded by 10. Only 8 FT attempts. Those are "getting outworked" kind of stats.

That defense was embarrassing in 2H. How many layups/dunks did they let up? 13 of their 16 2H FGs were layups or dunks. Other 3 were two 3ptrs and a short jumper. That's atrocious! Especially when this exact same team did the exact same thing already to you this year.

2H offense was equally puzzling. Antonio Campbell had 9 2H FG attempts, 7 were 3 ptrs? You mean to tell me he's torn up the entire league, yet he can't get post touches/attempts vs BG?!?!

And the body language was bad. Didn't see them huddling up during dead balls....not helping each other off the floor. Was total 180 from what we've seen last few weeks.

Not what you want to see during the stretch run for a title.

This could really be loss that bites them in ass big time in the end...could cost them top 4 seed.

They get an angry UB team Saturday with revenge on their mind...a trip to Akron...and a trip Miami.

None of those gimmies...especially after tonight.

Akron 10-5
Ohio 9-6
Kent 9-6
Ball St 9-6
Buffalo 9-6
CMU 8-7
Toledo 8-7
EMU 7-8
NIU 7-8

Yeah. That's a log jam. 1st-9th separated by 3 games. Ohio could win league or be on road for 1st round game.

Buckle up.

Keep in mind Akron has only home games remaining, so their 1 game lead is a lot more commanding than it appears.

Bitter pill to swallow with some tough games remaining to wind up the regular season.

I do think we are overachieving this year all things considered. It was spoiling the past few weeks to win as much as we did and tonight was one of those come crashing back down to earth games. The best is yet to come for this team.

Campbell and Simmons still played a heckuva game in the loss. I did find this interesting though reading the AP's game summary:

"Antonio Campbell scored 29 points and Simmons added another 24 to lead Ohio, but the Bobcats got just three points from its bench." Just three points from the bench isn't going to get it done.

A part of me wants a third shot at the Falcons in Cleveland. Another part of me wants nothing to do with them given our track record against them.

What's maddening and exciting all at the same time is this year's team could go 3-0 or 0-3 to wrap up the regular season.

As frustrating as it is to be in a one bid conference, it also is kind of nice that we can get hot for a week and punch a ticket to the dance. While Akron is in first place they just lost to Miami tonight-showing that almost anyone in the MAC could win the tournament this year.

if the MAC Tournament started today we would be preparing to play the winner of BGSU at Toledo. We're jinxed against the Falcons for some reason.

With the exception of our now 1 game below .500 record vs Akron BGSU is the only MAC team that Ohio doesn't have a winning record against, historically. Should also be noted that for the past 2 seasons a win over BGSU in football would have put the Bobcats in Detroit.

There's a weird symmetry in that BG's last NCAA Tournament appearance and OU's last MAC football championship happened in 1968.

Now we will have another opportunity to see if this team can rebound by becoming more mentally tough and be willing to play D.
I will say, as I watched the entire game, that we seemed to play without much energy. Almost like the team felt that they could win by treating this game as a scrimmage. As we started to get out rebounded to me it was a sign that we weren't playing hard to the ball.
Yes we are fortunate that all the other teams in contention lost as well, but we didn't take care of our business. It is rare that a situation like this arises and we remain in the same position for Saturday. Will the team come out and ramp up the D and get back on track? You have to believe that the same result with all the other, in contention teams, will not repeat itself like last night come Sat.

For those wondering about Block, he only played limited minutes because he got sick during the game. I don't think he was even on the bench in the second half. I think Saul mentioned this in post game too.

What BG found last night is to just let Tony and Simmons have their games and shut down everybody else.

Win out and we get at least a 2 seed; go 2-1 and most likely at least a 3. Too bad we couldn't take advantage of Akron losing last night, but the situation really hasn't changed since Kent and BSU both lost too. We still have the tiebreakers over everyone who's 9-6.

Didn't realize this. That makes a BIG difference with this team. Block provides a lot of basketball IQ and toughness. Also, guys were probably gassed in those last 4 minutes by then, thus lazy D, fouls, missed shots, bad shots, etc.
