Try talking like that after you notch that first NCAA win, there, Zippy.

We have more NCAA tournament WINS than they have NCAA tournament APPEARANCES!

And don't get me started on the trash "arena" that is the JAR...

Speaking of the James A. Rhodes Gym, any updates from those up north on a new building in Akron for basketball? (and other sports/concerts, etc)
Akron is teetering on the financial brink, so there will be no new arena in the next decade. They brought in an idiot as president who tried to change the name of the university (failed), to rebrand it as "Ohio's Polytechnic University" (branding now being scrapped), to raise enrollment (applications and deposits for next fall are down double-digits), reduce attrition (significant loss in second and third year students), improve employee morale (faculty leaving in droves), and improve fundraising (donations down more than 30% in last accounting). There's word the board is trying to find a way to dump him without losing face, which is basically impossible. Their board chair needs to go too. My favorite: They forgot to order diplomas for mid-year graduation ceremonies and had to scramble to avoid huge embarrassment. Second favorite: Dean of college of education sending out a letter announcing new name of school (Lebron James...blah, blah) and misspelling Lebron's name. It is a dumpster fire up here in Summit County.
Well, the "Polytechnic" stuff is still all over the mail my HS senior son receives from Zippy.

My guess is that they say the same thing about us. Yes we've won more NCAA tournament games but they are over the last 10 years the best team in the MAC unfortunately.
I agree that we have at least as many delusional fans (all message boards do), but I refuse to say that they are the "best" MAC team over the last 10 years. Ours is a league where the only lasting memories and significant national impressions are Tournament wins. I think most honest Akron fans would trade our last 10 years for their last 10 years in an instant.
Without question.

I read something on there that their recruits appreciate the "20 wins a season" thing. Yeah, I bet that gleaming 20 win plaque in the trophy case is a lot better than an NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 banner, an upset over Georgetown, front page of the USA Today, two guys close to being in the NBA recently (Cooper, Mo), a better arena, a better campus, a better education, etc, etc, etc.

I can't wait till they change their name to Ohio Tech. Then they'll actually be somewhat interesting.
No sarcasm intended when I ask: How many of Akron's recruits are intensely interested in "a better education?"

They have told people it is being phased out. Their Board Chair admitted in an interview two weeks ago that it hasn't been successful. The enrollment numbers themselves tell the tale. I suppose they will exhaust existing printed materials...but they recently changed their television ad and deleted the Polytechnic mention.

How many NCAA tournament wins does Ohio have? As I search my dust bin of a memory, I think maybe 7 - one around 1960, two in '64, one under Nee, Georgetown, Michigan, Central Florida.

2012 Akron Fans after losing the MAC Tourney to Ohio in the Q's East Garage chanting "ONE AND DONE!" clap...clap...clap-clap-clap.

Two Weeks Later: Whining about how they would've been a Sweet Sixteen team because they were clearly better than us and we made the Sweet Sixteen.

One Year Later: They embarrass themselves and the conference in NCAA tourney by absorbing an 88-42 beat down courtesy of VCU.

Personally, I've always rooted for the conference teams outside of MAC play, but that Karma is good stuff.

This question of the most successful program over the last ten years is interesting. Yes Akron has had the most regular season and MAC tournament success. Ohio has had the most post season success. Another measuring stick could be the number of coaches hired away during that stretch. Since TOS in the 05-06 season, Ohio is on their 4th head coach. Dambrot has been at Akron since 2004. I don't think Zippy survives losing the coach that coached Lebron. I look a t Dambrot much like Charlie Coles with the idea when he leaves, that program will take a step back. Miami has taken a step back.

Has anyone else had 3 head coaches hired away in the last ten years? In the mid-major landscape that is another mark of a good program. Do other programs want to poach your coach? Ohio lost two very good recruiting classes when the head coach departed.

If one of the previous two head coaches would've stayed, I think Ohio would be view as a more consistent teams in the MAC. If Phillips decides to stay for 10+ seasons, I have a feeling we'd be the best program over the last 10 years status.

Forgot to order diplomas? I'd love to know who the scholastic products rep is for Akron. Seems like a pretty easy account to pick up.

Not only hasn't anyone had 3 head coaches hired away I think the entire conference has only had 3 in the last 10 years. Jim Christian, Geno Ford and Bobby Hurley. That's the list. From 1990 through 2002 the conference had a bunch of coaches move on to higher jobs though.

Our co-championship year featured an opening round NIT loss to Denver(!!) - that season is hardly a cherished memory.
That's actually a very good point and puts the whole argument in perspective.

As tempting as it is from a sporting perspective to dance on Zippy's possible grave, this is a really bad thing for Northeast Ohio. With flat to declining numbers of high school graduates across the state, there were bound to be winners and losers in enrollment. In the case of Akron, it's getting smoked by Cleveland State and Kent State, which have both done major work and attracted donation and students in the last decade. CSU has gone from pure commuter school to a legitimate urban residential option and Kent State's campus is vastly improved and connected to a sparkling new downtown Kent. Akron has made strides, but not kept up.
