I'm going to tee off here in a sec on Zippy. But realistically, it's more a rant against their fan base than their team.

Do any of you ever go over to the Zips message board and read the nonsense over there? If not, it's good for a chuckle. There is such an air of superiority coming from them that it's disgusting. Here's my big question: why do they have this superiority complex? All that bunch has ever done is win MAC games. And it's only recent history that has even seen them sniff the NCAA brackets. Talking about being an at-large selection, speaking of their squad as "a sweet 16 team," it's beyond hysterical to me. Try talking like that after you notch that first NCAA win, there, Zippy. That's right, 0 NCAA wins. 0 NIT wins. Heck, has Akron ever won ANY basketball postseason tourney game? Ever? Reading their boards shows you how condescending and dismissive most of their fan base is towards the rest of the MAC. We may well go up there and lose tonight. But there is nothing...NOTHING I would love more than to see them in Cleveland and send them back home in a 39 mile long trail of sadness and tears. And you know what, Zippy nation? You should thank us when we do it. It will save you the longer travel to the tourney sites for your inevitable 1-and-done there. There are 12 teams in the MAC, only 3 of them have never won an NCAA tournament game. You're one of them, Zippy. Chew on that for a while.

I respect the team. I laugh at the fan base.

We have more NCAA tournament WINS than they have NCAA tournament APPEARANCES!

And don't get me started on the trash "arena" that is the JAR...

My guess is that they say the same thing about us. Yes we've won more NCAA tournament games but they are over the last 10 years the best team in the MAC unfortunately.

Well, they are giving away a bobblehead of their greatest alum....oh, wait... Maybe they should put out a bobblehead of an NBA player that actually went there...oh, wait...

How did I forget that? When are we going to do an Oscar Robertson Ohio bobblehead? I mean he went to college IN Ohio, right?

I agree that we have at least as many delusional fans (all message boards do), but I refuse to say that they are the "best" MAC team over the last 10 years. Ours is a league where the only lasting memories and significant national impressions are Tournament wins. I think most honest Akron fans would trade our last 10 years for their last 10 years in an instant.

Without question.

I read something on there that their recruits appreciate the "20 wins a season" thing. Yeah, I bet that gleaming 20 win plaque in the trophy case is a lot better than an NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 banner, an upset over Georgetown, front page of the USA Today, two guys close to being in the NBA recently (Cooper, Mo), a better arena, a better campus, a better education, etc, etc, etc.

I can't wait till they change their name to Ohio Tech. Then they'll actually be somewhat interesting.

I agree with both of these actually. It depends on how you define what you're talking about by "best MAC team." If you're talking about the team that has performed the best IN the MAC, i.e. MAC regular season and MAC tournament games, it's hard to argue it's not Zippy. But if you're talking about the MAC team that has been the "best MAC team" on a national scale, the conversation is very different.

Speaking of the James A. Rhodes Gym, any updates from those up north on a new building in Akron for basketball? (and other sports/concerts, etc)

I think we are arguing two different things. They have been the best MAC team for the last ten years in the regular season. But they haven't been dominant. They've just been consistently very good. Here's how they stack up with everyone else since 2005.

MAC TOURNEY TITLES
Akron - 3
Ohio - 3
Kent State - 2
Buffalo, Miami WMU - 1

MAC REGULAR SEASON EAST DIVISION TITLES
Kent - 4 (2 outright, 2 co-champs)
Akron - 4 (1 outright, 3 co-champs)
Buffalo - 3 (3 co-champs)
Miami - 1 (1 outright)
Ohio - 1 (1 co-champs)
BGSU - 1 (1 co-champs)

NCAA Tourney record
Ohio 3-2 (+1.0 avg pt diff)
Akron 0-3 (-24.0 pts)
Kent St 0-2 (-14.0)
Miami 0-1 (-2.0)
Buffalo 0-1 (-6.0)
WMU 0-1 (-24.0)

Where they have excelled however is in Cleveland. They made the MAC Championship game 7 straight times which is no small feat. But that 7 year stretch is their positive history. They are Al Czervik (Miami is Judge Smails and we are Danny Noonan).

There was a plan last year to use tax revenue to build a new arena across from Canal Park. Those plans were scrapped (the tax revenue would be used for safety services instead) and I haven't seen anything new since.

Uh... I dislike Akron almost as much as the rest of you guys. But, 7 straight MAC Championship game appearances, 4 MAC East titles, and 3 MAC Tourney titles means you are the best team in the MAC in the last 10 years.

Unfortunately, they are the equivalent of "4-A" baseball players. They do great all the way through AAA but can't handle the majors....

I agree. Frankly, that kind of consistency is what Ohio should be targeting. It should also come with the expectation to win a tournament game once out of those three years, though I acknowledge some of that comes from the match-up given on Selection Sunday.

I get it. If you're a junkie of the MAC and you follow it closely, Akron is without question the most consistently successful team over the last 10 years. I still say that no program in this league would trade three NCAA Tournament wins for even 10 outright regular season MAC titles. Our co-championship year featured an opening round NIT loss to Denver(!!) - that season is hardly a cherished memory.

Zippy does have two post-MAC tournament wins. They were 1-1 in the NIT in both 2006 and 2008. They've lost six straight post-season tournament games since then.

If you are willing to trade Akron's regular season championships in basketball for our NCAA tournament success in basketball, you probably agree too strongly with that crazy guy over on the football board.

Which OHIO team would you prefer, the 2012 team that won the MAC tournament or the 2013 team that won the MAC regular season??? Zero debate in my mind.

Just a quick thought regarding NCAA Tourney victories - how do you post Kent with an 0-2 record when they got as far as the Elite 8 when Gates was there?

He specified last 10 years. If you go back to 2000 the standings are different.

You make a good point here. I guess I'd like to hope there's a happy medium that Ohio could achieve that is somewhere in between.

It's kind of silly to rail on a program for their postseason failures...when your program is in the conference that they've dominated to reach those postseason games in the first place. I'm not saying I would trade our postseason success for their regular season success, but I might be more proud of it.

Akron is teetering on the financial brink, so there will be no new arena in the next decade. They brought in an idiot as president who tried to change the name of the university (failed), to rebrand it as "Ohio's Polytechnic University" (branding now being scrapped), to raise enrollment (applications and deposits for next fall are down double-digits), reduce attrition (significant loss in second and third year students), improve employee morale (faculty leaving in droves), and improve fundraising (donations down more than 30% in last accounting). There's word the board is trying to find a way to dump him without losing face, which is basically impossible. Their board chair needs to go too. My favorite: They forgot to order diplomas for mid-year graduation ceremonies and had to scramble to avoid huge embarrassment. Second favorite: Dean of college of education sending out a letter announcing new name of school (Lebron James...blah, blah) and misspelling Lebron's name. It is a dumpster fire up here in Summit County.

Read more closely, I am railing against the fan base's perception of their program. When I read on their Miami thread about how "we're a Sweet 16 team fooling around" and other such nonsense, I literally laughed out loud. You've never even won a tournament game, but you think you're a Sweet 16 team? The only Sweet 16 teams they have seen have been OTHER MAC teams!

New Rebranding initiative: Akron Junior College, administered by Kent State University as a feeder institution, as Kent takes ownership of the law school. Just a thought . . .

"Kent State University - Akron Campus" does have a nice ring to it.
