My guess is that they say the same thing about us. Yes we've won more NCAA tournament games but they are over the last 10 years the best team in the MAC unfortunately.
I agree that we have at least as many delusional fans (all message boards do), but I refuse to say that they are the "best" MAC team over the last 10 years. Ours is a league where the only lasting memories and significant national impressions are Tournament wins. I think most honest Akron fans would trade our last 10 years for their last 10 years in an instant.
I think we are arguing two different things. They have been the best MAC team for the last ten years in the regular season. But they haven't been dominant. They've just been consistently very good. Here's how they stack up with everyone else since 2005.
MAC TOURNEY TITLES
Akron - 3
Ohio - 3
Kent State - 2
Buffalo, Miami WMU - 1
MAC REGULAR SEASON EAST DIVISION TITLES
Kent - 4 (2 outright, 2 co-champs)
Akron - 4 (1 outright, 3 co-champs)
Buffalo - 3 (3 co-champs)
Miami - 1 (1 outright)
Ohio - 1 (1 co-champs)
BGSU - 1 (1 co-champs)
NCAA Tourney record
Ohio 3-2 (+1.0 avg pt diff)
Akron 0-3 (-24.0 pts)
Kent St 0-2 (-14.0)
Miami 0-1 (-2.0)
Buffalo 0-1 (-6.0)
WMU 0-1 (-24.0)
Where they have excelled however is in Cleveland. They made the MAC Championship game 7 straight times which is no small feat. But that 7 year stretch is their positive history. They are Al Czervik (Miami is Judge Smails and we are Danny Noonan).
