I really enjoy the conference tournament time of year. And we had out first two number one seeds go down last night.

- Patriot League #1 Bucknell fell to #9 Holy Cross in their quarter finals.
- Atlantic Sun #1 North Florida lost to #4 Florida Gulf Coast.

Interesting note in the Atlantic Sun, despite losing, North Florida could still make the NCAAs. FGCU will be playing 12-21 Stetson in the finals. Stetson was hit with an APR post season ban. The A-Sun let them play in the tournament, with the provision that if they won, the #1 seed would fill the AQ spot in the NCAAs.

Live by the three, die by the three. North Florida was up 21-12 on FGCU yesterday after making their first four three-point attempts. From that point on they went 4-27 from three and were outscored 77-37.

FGCU just lost to Stetson last Thursday in the last regular season game.

That's odd. Why even let them play? They'd still give North Florida the bid if they had lost in the first round?

Just watched a great OVC semi finals game. #8 seed Austin Peay takes down Belmont (and former Ohio signee / OVC player of the year Evan Bradds) 97-96 in OT. Belmont had a tip in at the buzzer called good, but was correctly overturned on replay to give the Govs the win. Austin Peay had to win their final game of the regular season game just to make the tourney. Great game.

This is one of the best times of year! Never gets old seeing the pure joy and excitement on the players faces when they punch a ticket to the dance-especially if they caught lightning in a bottle as a lower seed. I honestly enjoy watching the mid to low majors tourneys more than the big boys.

Lots of great hoops to look forward to over the next month!

Great start to Championship Week. From Austin Peay, to Larry Hunter's Catamounts 2OT victory on Sat (Though they lost today), to the MVC Championship game, some good games this weekend. FGCU now up 5 with under 3 to go.

FGCU wins by 2 in OT to head to the dance. Good game to watch when you have not rooting interest.

As an aside, the FGCU staff did a great job with containing post game court storming. They had a wall of staff blocking any fans from getting to the opposing players and coaches.

Great drama in the ASun. 8 teams, in first round of tournament 7 upset 2 and 6 upset 3. In Semis 7 upset 6 and 4 upset 1. 7, Stetson, can't go to NCAA Tournament so if they beat 4 FGCU in Final then reg season champ, #1 N Florida gets ticket. If FGCU beats Stetson, they get go. FGCU wins in OT by 2pts. Fun to watch.

Linc DArner Coaching the Phoenix of UWGB has Valpo on the ropes in OT. Been watching him since he played in Anderson IN late 80s . Led Fl Southern to the D2 championship. Pretty good looking squad to make Valpo an also ran. Great game

It was. Crazy play by Valpo to send it into OT. Both Summit League semi final games were crazy too. SDSU commits back court foul with 2 sec left up by one and Denver kid misses front end of one and one.

I watched the MAAC final last night. Very exciting game, with Iona winning at the end. Monmouth could still get an At Large. I'm hoping they do. If anyone has earned it, they have.

Iona-Monmouth was certainly exciting. Now the bench mob has to sweat it out all week. Amazing to see how far UNC-Wilmington has come, knocking off Hofstra to punch their ticket. They were one of the most pathetic teams I had ever seen when we had them at home in Coop's senior year. Even with how bad we were last year, we still crushed them.

Chattanooga - ETSU was a nice nightcap. Both of those teams have some ath-a-letes.

Loads of good games last night. The CAA final was outstanding, along with a bunch of the first round MAC games.

Jay Bilas agrees, kind of surprisingly. Dick Vitale, doing a later game last night, said they should as well, not surprisingly.

In fact, Vitale bemoaned the fact that .500 teams from big conferences get invites over 25-win teams from smaller conferences. He said that how big schools set up their non-conference schedules is keeping the smaller schools from getting the chance to put together impressive non-con wins needed to get a look on selection Sunday.

Maybe if guys like Vitale start saying this, real change could occur in the selection process. I think he's right. Look at UNC losing at NIU, and Monmouth beating UCLA, even Akron at Arkansas. I think it's proven that mid-majors can play well against "bigger" schools given the shot. Besides that, who in the heck wants to watch the 8th place team from a P5 conference (besides that conference and its fans), that's 18-12, and 8-10, play in the NCAA Tournament? It's as bad as two 6-6 teams in a participation bowl.
