Really. I don't see how any one can argue against more games, no matter what our record. It gets our guys more game experience--this is a bad thing?


Why don't we just end the season early if we start out the year with not a very good record, especially in conference...kinda like this year.


Sure more game(s) can lead to bad stuff...but the only way we have a chance to get grooving and play more good ball this year is, surprisingly apparently, to play more games.

Not playing more games is a thought without merit.

I never expected this much complaining! Enjoy the extra basketball! I for one am excited that I get to attend Monday's game and catch the boys one more time this year.

I'm enjoying the extra basketball, no matter who we are playing. I wouldn't care if we were playing all D-III teams. I'm pretty sure it isn't the games per se that make these tournaments beneficial, but more so the extra 5-10-15 practices you can get in when your team only has ONE SENIOR. This tournament may not benefit Treg, but he just earned the rest of the guys 3-4 extra practices. That can't hurt for next year.

Can you imagine being a UNC-G fan and hearing at the end of yout 12-16 season that you're playing in a postseason tourney? How weird would that be?

The Vegas 16 only filled 8 of its 16 spots, the CIT only filled 26 of its 32 spots, but the CBI managed to fill all 16 of its spots.
I guess that is the question I'd like answered. 68 (NCAA) + 32 (NIT) + 32 (CIT) + 16 (CBI) + 16 (Vegas) = 164. They only filled 150. I understand there are a few programs that turn down invites, but to get to the likes of Seattle and UNC-G, it would have to be at least 100. Did 100+ teams turn down postseason play? Seems unlikely.

Maybe the CIT & CBI should just merge into the NIT and make another field of 64. I'd rather see that than the NCAA go to 128.

In the past I've criticized the importance of these games, but that's purely from a fan's perspective. It's like having the MLB runners-up play during the World Series. But having been to one a couple years ago I realize that the kids who are on the floor are there because they love the game and generally want to win. (I wasn't sure about our effort vs Denver in the NIT a few years ago.) And the real benefit for OUr team is that our young team gets more practice and more playing time this year, which should make them better next year. If the Athletics Dept can afford it, go for it.

As for last night's game, was Campbell ailing? He was pulled during the final TO of regulation and was standing outside the huddle, bending over and with a towel wrapped around his neck. He seemed to be having some kind of discomfort.

We have a banner up for winning a "preseason" tournament - so why not for any post season tournament?
We're in pretty good company as far as winning that preseason tournament. Winning at O$U, at UVA, then taking two at Madison Square Garden is not something many MAC teams will ever match. I'm proud of that banner.

What is interesting is how close the games were overall. Russ mentioned that during the game as well. It's also interesting to see 4 of the 5 lowest rated teams win games. And Duquesne winning 120-112-and people complain about our defense. It's a crazy world.

Albany was also rated above us in Sagarin, they're a pretty good team, we were fortunate to win-thanks Treg.

Agree! Those 4 games, taken as a whole, provided some of my most exciting moments as a Cats fan. After taking down OSU in C-Bus, it was off to ranked UVA. Cats took a big lead that shrank alarmingly but still prevailed. Then to Madison Square Garden and a good George Washington. Then a pulse-elevating win in OT against an even better New Mexico State.

I don't really see any other reason that the there aren't better teams in these tournaments than 100 schools turned them down. Do you see many Ivy League schools wanting to play on? How about the financially strapped Historically Black colleges? I know Colorado State turned them down here locally. There may all kinds of conflicts with spring breaks,tests, etc.

I'd go with 128 in the NCAA and 1 other tourney of 16 or so and that's it, but it's a free country with sports channels wanting to fill airtime.

I agree, but since the NCAA bought and subsequently ruined the tournament from it's previous glory days, it's not even in the same class as it was prior. The prestige is long gone since it's currently only a 4(it may be 8 in the coming years) team tourney now.

The preseason NIT was always biggie for for us "locals".

Always gave you something to do the Friday of Thanksgiving weekend.
We used to go into the city,check the store windows have dinner then go to the finals.

Since they went to the current format nobody cares anymore.

I'm sure some other BA folks know of others in their areas who declined. I'm pretty sure that there lots of schools in lesser conferences that aren't willing to foot the $40,000 or $80,000 bills for hosting the first 2 rounds.

I can't believe Optimist misses us 71s.

Look guys...it's great that OHIO can extend the season and get some more experience and a win or two or three. But, seriously, to get excited about this tournament is just difficult. I can't believe any of you are that excited about the teams in this tournament.

I have to admit, last night I didn't even watch the game and didn't visit the Chat room. First game I've missed all year. I guess I am just ready to get outdoors and get Spring going.

I'm with you. I don't care who we are playing. This is essentially a Holiday Tournament played in March. We just played a good team. If we beat UNC-G we will probably play another good team. Some people just seem to want to complain about everything. This was a very fun year and I'm not ready for it to end. If you feel it's not worth your time don't watch. I'm sure Treg Setty is thrilled they opted to play in this tournament.

In terms of resume, winning this tournament ranks right up there with those November wins over Athletes in Action. (Those weren't gimme's either.)

I agree, this has about as much meaning as a South Green pickup game in 1993. But, more Ohio basketball > less Ohio Basketball.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't think anyone here thinks the CBI is a major tournament or is in the least bit prestigious. There's only one tournament going on right now that anyone is really excited about and it sure isn't this one.

That being said, I think most of the positive posters are merely saying this is a good experience for the team and it's a couple more home games, that's all. I don't understand all the nay-saying about this tournament; we know its minor at best and that's OK. This young team still needs game experience together and this is a nice way of providing it, that's all. Nothing more nor nothing less.

That was a very good field. UVa made it to the Elite Eight that year while both GW and New Mexico State played in the NIT. The other team in Madison Square Garden was Memphis who was a Sweet 16 team that year. Beating tO$U was great but they were really bad that year. Still, just like the UNC win a few years later, it's in the books.

Amen.

And the win over Albany is probably our best win of the year, ranking wise. Glad we got to play it.
