As it stands today (assuming Tony returns) what does our projected Depth Chart look like? Appreciate that a player may be listed at more than one position. Thanks.

It's been at least a decade since we've had all 13 scholarship players available at one time. If it holds up like this we are going to have a deep, deep bench.

Starters
PG: Jaaron Simmons
SG: Jordan Dartis
SF: Gavin Block
PF: Kenny Kaminski
C: Antonio Campbell

Bench
C: Doug Taylor
G/F: Rodney Culver
G: Mike Laster
G/F: Khari Harley
F: Jason Carter
C: Wadly Mompremier
G: James Gollon
F/C: Ellis Dozier

I wonder about the odds of Carter redshirting at this point when Tony confirms he'll return. You can't give 13 guys PT.

Or, does someone else opt to transfer?

I would think that Gollon and Dozier will play no more than 3 minutes a game, Wadley is a space filler, 1-2 mins per game...I think we'll see the starters playing less mins. More like Jaaron from 39 to 35..guys like Harley and Laster sharing minutes. I do believe that the big bench minutes will be in the hands of Doug Taylor, Culver (I'm calling it, big time pickup) and Carter. Carter can stretch defenses and plays defense.

No way that Carter redshirts. He's too advanced.

I'm with you Jeff. No way. Way too skilled and he's a body in the paint to clean up the glass. I honestly think he's gonna push for A LOT of PT. Especially with his passing ability in the post. Then again it all depends on how and where Saul plays him.

This comment, along with the Bobcat1998's comment about how he'll stretch defenses leads me to want to kind of ask this question too. I haven't seen him, and I'm interested to get an idea of where he fits on this team. I thought in HS he's really played the 4?

so this?
(appreciating the depth chart approach is more football than basketball)

PG: Simmons, Dartis, Gollon -- back-up by committee
SG: Dartis, Laster, Harley, Gollon -- (Culver may slice into here as well)
SF: Block, Harley/Culver -- see what happens between Harley and Culver
PF: Kaminski, Carter, Dozier
C: Campbell, Taylor, Mompremier

I've been wondering about Dozier. Since he practiced with team all season there is data. I'm assuming from this thread he's not an impact guy? Any chance for down the road?

I guess I prefer to approach this from the angle of "who is getting minutes"?

So we know Simmons, Dartis, KK, Campbell will start and play 30+. We assume that Taylor & Block will get major PT. After that, there's probably a log jam for the last 4 spots of guys getting 10+ minutes. I can't see Saul playing a rotation larger than 9-10 for the most part, which is why I wondered about a redshirt year for Carter.

One other thing worthy of brief thought: would a wing player transfer with the signing of Culver?

Dozier is gonna be as big a question mark as the incoming freshmen at this point. We know he has length. I'm more curious to see what position he's going to play. Ohio doesn't necessarily "need" another big, but a 3-4 combo guy might be nice.

Speaking of Carter, I think we can see him in that 3-4 combo too like Treg was for most of his career.

Defense, defense, defense should be the mantra all summer long. We know these guys can score. Just need to learn to stop people.

I think the best way to answer this question is in 200 minutes instead of trying to devise a complicated depth chart. It is very difficult right now as we have seen how players can really elevate or regress over an offseason, and we really can't be too sure what we get out of Carter, Culver, Gollon or Dozier.

But, that is the point of sports discussion...So here is my early guess:

Simmons - 34
Campbell - 32
Dartis - 32
Kaminski - 25
Block - 25
Taylor - 20
Carter - 10
Mompremier - 10
Laster/Harley/Dozier/Gollon/Culver/Walkons - Not in the regular rotation

Before you criticize, I challenge you to try the exercise yourself. It is very difficult. If you're giving half the minutes right off the top to the best trio in the conference BY far in Tony/Jaaron/Jordan...distributing 100 minutes to 10 talented players is tough.

I like Doug Taylor more than most and would like to see him get a lot of Treg's minutes. I'm excited about Culver but I'm just not sure where the minutes come from this coming season. Unfortunately I think Mompremier, Harley & Laster could be victims of going with the younger guys who you want to develop. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Gollon or Dozier establish themselves and earn minutes but it won't be easy.

Good luck coach!

Simmons, Campbell, and Kaminsky are a great returning group. We will again be one of the MAC favorites. But, we have serious quickness and athleticism issues. Especially with Setty gone. We'll have to figure out how to coach around that. We have very good basketball players. But, athletic teams (Buffalo, Akron, etc.) will continue to have an edge against us. I hope Culver is quick. I haven't heard that word used with Carter so I'm not counting on that from him.

The big question is how we coach around losing Setty's explosiveness, and who steps up to claim his points, rebounds, and minutes and how.

Other than that, I see almost the exact same roles for everyone on the team.

I don't think Dozier should be discounted at all. He was a 3*, I think known for being a stretch 4. He's obviously a pretty big kid too. In my case, in my earlier post above, I'm going based off of guys who have had proven PT in games.

Unless something drastic happens to Wadley over the offseason (and I hope it does), he will be a senior in uniform and that's it. Culver will eat up those minutes. It's about time we have a couple of freshman years with guys stepping up and I see Culver coming in to replace Gavin and stirring things up. His athleticism and length alone will be enough to get him in. Imagine a murder's row of Campbell, Dartis, Simmons, Culver and even Laster "D"ing up. Could be fun.

So Culver is going to take Wadly, Gavin and Treg's minutes from last year's team? You must really think highly of him.

Gavin isn't losing minutes. If anything, he's gaining them. He's a glue guy with a high basketball IQ and from the evidence of last year was the one guy you could count on to take a charge or hustle for a loose ball when you desperately needed it. Not to mention he has no fear, is tough as nails and can shoot the rock.

I'm high on Culver and Carter, but I think we have to just wait and see what happens. These guys could be All-MAC players or just not fit for the college game. Nobody knows at this point.

For my money, the bulk of the minutes are going to Simmons, Dartis, Campbell and Kaminski with the next group of guys filling in as needed depending on the matchups. I still say Ohio needs to do something about a backup PG. Simmons can't possibly log the same amount of minutes again and we shouldn't expect him to. And if he's ever in foul trouble, Ohio is dead in the water. Jordy can play point when called upon, but either he or Gollon need to step up even more this year and fill that role.

A 6'4'' freshman shooting guard is going to take a 6'10'' senior center's minutes? Right, and I'm Miss Black America.

If Culver is as good as some say he could be, I could see him taking some minutes from Kenny K in a round-a-bout way. In some games, Gavin took minutes from KK. If KK's rebounding and defense don't improve I could see Gavin getting some if KK minutes, and Culver "filling" Gavin's spot.

I agree the minutes distribution is a better approach, but the mix of minutes and depth chart illustrates (to me) we have two areas of concern - depth at PG (we all saw this), and (I agree with Monroe!) big men to rebound and hold down the middle (beyond Tony). Simmons and Tony stay healthy and on the court for major minutes - we are fine, if not... someone needs to emerge.

I'm not concerned about big men after Tony to be honest. Taylor has shown to be able to get the job done in the low post, and Wadly can provide back-up minutes. That doesn't even include the currently unknown contributions of Carter and Dozier, and what I hope will be an improved Kaminski.

The PG depth is something I totally agree with. If I were a betting man, I'd guess that Wadley's scholly might have gone to that spot if he left. He didn't, so we're left to see how Gollon improves (I think he definitely will) and how the coaching staff uses Dartis to give a breather to Simmons. There's a lot of talent to choose from, that's for sure!

I think the backup PG problem is overstated, except in the case of a long term injury to Simmons, then it is a big problem. I am totally comfortable with Dartis running the point. Gollon should be fine for a few minutes if needed.

I think Simmons high minutes last year were more a product of Simmons stamina and determination to stay in the game, lack of foul trouble or injury, and of course his immense talent than it was a lack of trust in other options.

Reducing KK minutes might help keep him fresh. As I understand it, his specialty at MSU was coming off the bench and hitting 3s at a high percentage.

Harley was a point guard prior to his growth spurt and handled the position adequately when Jordie went down in the CBI and Jaaron needed a break. Could be the wild card if necessary.
