Would a top-tier coach be able to turn Rutgers around? Could say Coach K win there? Plenty of high level talent close by to recruit. Problem is that talent wants nothing to do with the team/program. From an outside perspective it seemed like they put all of their eggs in the football basket from a facilities standpoint but even that has not given them anything.

what was Wright State shocked about? Nothing online.
Billy Donlon fired after 6 seasons. They made the Horizon Championship game 3 of the last 4 years and had what appears to be a pretty good year this year. Just went over to their board and they seem overall pretty happy he's gone. I guess you had to be there.

I would argue that Wright State is a better job than half of the MAC.

I hope that is bad info . I like what coach was building over there
Recruiting Indiana kid s, playing good hoops... Though Julie did not really like the style and rules when he played there. I'm not sure Walt was on board there either. That said o think he is s good coach headed in the right https://mobile.twitter.com/gregrakestraw/status/710178096... edited to add info

Count me as surprised. Billy Donlan fired after a 22-13 (13-5) season. Placed third in the Horizon.

Edit: Dan Dakich ripping WSU on Twitter. Says if the NABC "has any sack they'll boycott the WSU job" and that WSU has a "bad bad administration and AD"

I've noticed no MAC coaches mentioned yet (Cooper still holding on). Makes me think most MAC programs on in good hands with positive recent hires - Oats, Saul, Montgomery, Huger, Whitford, etc. . . That, plus one of the best freshman classes in many years, has the MAC trending upward, IMO.

There were two articles in today's Dayton Daily News talking about Donlon's firing. A player says the AD talked to the team, and the AD won't even confirm the firing to the media. WSU says, "There is nothing to report. If anything changes, we will let you know." It was reported that WSU does not have a full-time strength and conditioning coach for basketball, and their assistant coaches are thought to be the lowest paid in the conference. And the AD has hardly talked to Donlon all season. Right now the AD is looking like a moron.

Cooper has to be gone. I know they have a solid recruiting class coming in but he's entering the last year of his contract and he just hasn't produced.

The papers thought Hurley was signed, sealed and delivered.

Facilities at RU are a B1G problem.
They want to build a new practice facility, but have no money and no timetable.

There are no plans to replace the RAC.
The problem with the building is that, based on its design,it can't be expanded.

Rutgers football facilities are also not "B1G ready".

Everyone told RU they needed to improve the quality of their sports programs and upgrade their facilities before jumping to the B1G.
They wouldn't listen.

The only reason the B1G wanted them was to get the Big Ten network into more homes.
Apparently cable systems must carry it now.

where is all the cable money and BIG shares they are getting going to? Seems they would be able to leverage some to the income there to get some projects started.

Always wondered how Vivian Stringer went from the fanbase at Iowa and the facilites to Rutgers.

Chris Mack on Donlon. http://www.mydaytondailynews.com/news/sports/college/chri... /

The guy wins 22 games this year, 13 conference games, which is the most in the history of the school, goes to the championship game three years in a row in the Horizon League, graduates his players. I don’t know who Wright State is pretending to be or trying to be, but that’s ridiculous.”

Others not happy..http://www.mydaytondailynews.com/news/sports/college-bask...

Wright St is dumb. Chris Mack is right.

Billy Donlon might not be the best coach in america, but he didn't deserve this. Not to mention Bob Grant (their AD) - I've been in meetings with Grant back when I was a student at WSU and president of their basketball student section - he's never been confused with the brightest bulb in the room.

Donlon got fired for three very simple reasons.

1) WSU is a basketball school (Well as much as they can be considered any TYPE of school). It's their only big-time program and as such it is their lone money maker.
2) Lack of NCAA tourney appearances (Here is where WSU needs to check their ego and realize they aren't UD as much as they wish they were. They don't have the history, the success, the conference, the facilities, the budget - none of it.) Many "fans" were complaining that they weren't "dominating" in a "crappy league like the Horizon - ESPECIALLY since Butler left". Apparently they're big-time NCAA or bust now. Makes me chuckle.
3) People just didn't LIKE his slow-tempo, focus on defense style of play, even though it likely maximized their probability for success based on the type of kids he could recruit to Fairborn, and thus they blamed their lack of interest/attendance on Donlon (Not the fact that WSU only has 50ish years of history and only 25ish in D1, or the fact that they're overwhelmingly a commuter school which doesn't lead to much student interest nor a deep connection with alumni -- I mean I got 3 degrees from there and I attend more OU games than WSU and I can literally WALK to the Nutter Center from my house!).

With many "locals" complaining about the players/style of play, combined with half full arenas - the genius Grant decided they couldn't let their "money program" decline like that so he made the move. Then he took the punk way out by not even speaking to Donlon or talking to the press.

I've been amazed the caliber of coach WSU has been able to pull in recently from Ed Schilling (was a top assistant to Calipari) to Paul Biancardi to Brad Brownell and now Billy Donlon. If those guys can't cut it, I'm not sure what the heck they expect out of their new hire. Coach K isn't coming to Fairborn.

One word "money".
I don't know about her most recent contract, but her previous ones required her to have the same pay and benefits as the highest paid Head Coach,in any sport at the school.

Great move for both parties. Dixon is a TCU grad and did just about everything he could at Pitt. TCU is making moves to be a bigger player in basketball (committed AD and new arena) and they've got a good enough recruiting base in the Dallas area.

So who goes to Pitt? Dambrot might get a look.
