On the surface I do not see this as a big loss. This kid was not very productive during the conference season. Saul gave this kid plenty of opportunity via PT and
to me he would disappear at times when on the court.
Let's remember this was one of the kids that was available very late in the recruiting process, kinda like a left over.

We need another point guard.

He was playing with mono during conference play. I think his body broke down, not his game.

Thought we would probably lose a player during the summer, Taylor wasn't on my list as someone who would not return though. Been a tough summer for Saul.

The comments from Saul are pretty telling. The fact that he and the staff were blindsided by this and not much explanation other than a "gut feeling" makes me think he might end up somewhere Ohio doesn't want him to.

What, if any, limitations can really be placed on a kid who is released from a scholarship in terms of transfer destinations? If he ends up at UM, I'm not really concerned. On the other hand, I'd be bothered to see him at another MAC school.

Arkley's article from yesterday said that Ryan had not been present at workouts for the last three weeks. I'm surprised that nothing but a cryptic Instagram post from Wadly surfaced to even suggest something was up before yesterday.

They (meaning the coaches) technically can't place any limitations on where the athlete transfers. They can, however, refuse to grant their release, which will hinder their ability to land a scholarship. So really, if a coach didn't grant a release, but the kid left anyway, both parties would be suffering. The coach loses a scholarship to give to someone else and the athlete who left now has to both sit out a year and pay his way at the other school.

In other words, the restrictions aren't really restricting anything unless the release isn't granted. I'm sure before they sign the release there is some type of gentleman's agreement saying something like "just don't go to XXX school," but who knows?

Football is different animal. Remember a few years ago when the Michigan kid transferred to OSU and ended up being All Big Ten? Ouch.

But like you, I would be extremely ticked if RT ended up at another MAC school.

I have no idea, but he may resurface at a Division 2 school where he could play right away.

A lot of the bobcat basketball players live in the house directly across from mine and R Taylor lived in with them during the summer. I saw him moving his stuff out with his parents two or three weeks ago. I didn't think much about it.

He could also go to a JC for a year.

Yeah, it could have been just moving elsewhere in Athens but it's obvious now it wasn't. All this seems to have gone down weeks ago but was a pretty well kept secret for a while.

Why would you not to see him play in the MAC if he's the kind of player that some on on here claim that he is. I think there's some sour grapes by some. I wish him well, and hope he ends up happy someplace. Can you imagine how bad it would have been without him this past year? Not saying it wasn't bad enough with him.

Heard multiple stories last year about a terrible culture in the locker room and young players - particularly Ryan - being mistreated by a couple of seniors. The only thing that surprises me about his decision is how late it came.

I'm still confused about this one. Was this a basketball decision or a personal decision to leave?

Bingo! And with that disease gone, I was really looking forward to seeing him play this year - kind of a Mike Reese (sp) Javon Harris type of guy.

What were these stories? Who was the "disease?" Did #saulball do anything to address it?

It depends on which opinions you're talking about I guess. I'm one of those who thought he could have been a pretty good player in this conference. He was really smooth about 18 feet and in and had a quick bounce to get up and grab some boards. I hope he is happy wherever he is too, I just don't want Ohio to end up playing him once or twice a year. That would stink.

I'm pretty confident Simmons and Setty will provide strong leadership on and off the court this season. I look for a very inclusive locker room this season for the newcomers.

I must admit I was never a big fan of Bean's game and wondered how much his somewhat selfish shooting pattern frustrated teammates.

I have a really hard time bashing Stevie, I can't imagine dealing with three head coaches (and their assistants) in four years was easy. plus, he stayed AND graduated. Big props there.

Maybe part of the problem?
Same place other "summer transfers" lived?
Adequate supervision/communication there?

Bummer. I think Taylor had a lot of potential. Definitely played well for a freshman. We all know our issues at PG last year. I assumed with better PG play he would shine even more.

Oh well. I hope it works out well for him.

The freshman now have a big opportunity. Lots of minutes available....

I'm not saying I would be ticked if he went to another MAC school. I just think that it makes sense that if it's possible to restrict where a transfer goes as part of the process of the release, everyone would want to stop them from at least playing within their own conference. It just seems to make sense to me.
