Tone's defensive limitations are well known. He's not good. I think he's REALLY missing Treg as that second line of interior defense who could cover up his weaknesses and allow TC to play a little more timid to limit fouls and increase his minutes - which equates to more offense for us.
But, at least Tone TRIES on defense. KK doesn't even fake it. The kid can be a good shooter, but what good does it do if you refuse to rebound and your guy scores 20 on you every night?
Which leads me to, could we see a little more of Taylor or Carter on the floor with Campbell for their defense? Saul probably would be hesitant to play Taylor and Campbell at the same time because then you don't have a big to bring in for rest or foul trouble - but what about Jason Carter? Can he defend well enough? Is he ready as a freshman yet? Would Saul have the cajones to not start KK? Would KK be willing to be a bench scorer?
I feel like this move could be the type to change the trajectory of our team into something special - otherwise I think we're looking at a good/decent MAC squad.
Honestly, depending on who we're playing, I really like the idea of Tony and Carter, then Taylor and Kaminski, playing as duo's. As you said, sort of, they would seem compliment each other in each case.
I've seen a couple games where KK's defense, and his crashing the glass, were noticeable. He's more than just a spot up 3pt man, and he's shown it, but that's his obvious strong point.
One other thing I'll say is that against quality bigs, if Tony is having a hard time with them in a given game, why not get Carter or Taylor more minutes alongside Tony? Coming up in the conference season, I see no reason why Taylor isn't playing at least 15 minutes guarding Isaiah Johnson, even if Tony isn't in foul trouble.
