Dambrot had a lot of excuses after Kent beat Kron last night. In that discussion, he wrote off Jaaron's performance in Ohio's win over Akron.

From Saul's remark in the post-game press conference today, it sounds like Simmons was aware of the remarks. Not the right guy to anger heading into March...

I'm lost on this one as well. Why would Simmons name even get mentioned after losing to Kent? Need the full story here.

No problem with what he said about Jaaron's game. it was fair. He wasn't dissing him. Jaaron going 5-5 from 3 is an anomaly.

The top Tweet will go right to the comments.

I believe he was sort of comparing the Ohio loss to the Kent State loss. He more or less said Akron lost to Ohio because Simmons had a game he'd never be able to repeat, but against Kent State, the Zips it was "we did the things we needed to do. They did a better job of the things they needed to do."

If he said "Simmons was 5 for 5 from 3...not sure he could do that again even if you didn't guard him" it would make more sense, but he just said he had 38 points. I agree with you that 5 for 5 from 3 is an anomaly for him way more than it would be for Dartis or KK, but I'm not sure I'd say him going for 38 is an anomaly.

This is much ado about nothing. Dambrots remarks weren't much out of line.

100% diss IMO.

Basically said Simmons isn't good enough to get the points he did vs Akron.

We've had the best PG in the MAC 6 of the last 10 years. Not sitting well with KD apparently. I hope Jaaron sticks at Ohio for another year to keep Dambrot whining another year.

+1^^^^^^ If Simmons gets fueled by it, let him get fueled by it. I'm not sure how anyone can say that Dambrot wasn't minimizing Jaaron's performance in that game.

I don't he was meaning to diss Simmons; however, it might give JS some extra motivation.

Simmons went 5/5 for 15pts from 3 vs the Zips. Dambrot is saying that because Simmons is a 35% shooter from 3 on the season they could let him shoot from there all night and he's not going to score 38pts on them.

The problem with Dambrot's logic is that Simmons scored 10pts from inside the arc and 13pts from the foul line. The Zips had 3 players foul out and 2 more with 4 fouls.

Bottom line is Simmons' final numbers are more of a result of Akron's inability to properly defend him than it is a result of a statistical anomaly in his 3pt shooting percentage.

Exactly the opposite...as a coach you should know when you are saying something disparaging. This was a stupid thing to say. It was sour grapes after a loss to a rival. He easily could have said "yeah..Simmons was tough against us. He is a great point guard." End of quote. This speaks to what a sore loser and classless person he is.

This is why most coaches give you plain vanilla "coach speak" in post game pressers. Dambrotaparte just talks hooPS and gives the media his honest thoughts and we are skewering him over it.

I agree. He's making a "real" comment - not mindless platitudes. Not trying to start a political war, but it's the same reason so many enjoy Trump and his press conferences.

This is exactly right. Simmons is a great player, and more power to him if he gets motivated by a perceive slight, but Dambrot was just telling the truth. He averages 15 a game and shoots 37% from three. Obviously, it's an aberration when a guy like that goes off for a career high 38 on 100% three-point shooting.

He was just rattling through Akron's losses and explaining them. Poor shooting was mostly to blame, but having a guy more than double his season average can really ruin a game plan as well.

As far as being motivated by slights or perceived slights, a classic MAC example occurred back during the TOS years. Western Michigan was playing in Athens and Ohio had a big lead late in the game. Coah O'Shea emptied his bench. Stephen King had been out for a long time and hadn't had a very productive season. He hits a three and our bench erupts in cheers, etc. Coach Hawkins files that away in his memory bank. When it's time for Ohio t play in Kalamazoo, Hawkins brings that out and uses it to build anger, resentment and a desire for revenge with his team. It works...Western whips Ohio badly.

The lug nuts have been a little loose for several weeks. Credit them for winning but there's been a lot of close single digit victories over the past few weeks.

Maybe they are succumbing to the curse that is ESPN's Bracketology?

You never know with Akron. But, seems more likely to me this is the part of the wrestling match where the no-name gets in a few good shots and maybe a body slam, and then The Rock/Hulk/Undertaker/Savage/Animal Steele/Snuka or whoever ends up pounding the guy.

I don't know. Saying he doesn't normally shoot that well is one thing. Saying that even if you decided not to guard Jaaron he doesn't get 38 is quite another. That's a pretty big jab.

Really good point for Akron on the number of close wins. One thing I've seen is that Akron seems to go as Cheatham goes. When Ohio beat them, he had a rough game. Same applies in the last two losses.

Also seems like one of the keys is getting the tempo picked up when Isaiah Johnson is on the floor. Forcing him to run takes away his advantage in the post. Now, can Ohio beat them without having Carter foul out trying to guard him? That will probably be a deciding factor in the MAC Tournament for OUr Bobcats.

This, by the way, is where I think having Dozier being able to give 3-5 minutes in total to use up 3-4 fouls while Johnson is in the game would be useful. He's a poor FT shooter, so late in the game, once in they're in the bonus/double, why not have the "hack a dog" mentality from a guy who's not a significant offensive player?

On the other hand, in two minutes of garbage time vs BG, Ellis turned it over twice off his own body...

RIP, George "The Animal" Steele, quite the character on the WWF circuit, but a high school teacher/coach in real life.

I thought last night BG also had success doubling Johnson with the weak side guard when he caught the ball down low. Better to have a quicker smaller guy getting into his hands so he can't maneuver into position -- key steal late on the double by Denny was huge.
