I listened to the post-game press conferences on the Ohio web page, http://www.ohiobobcats.com/sports/m-baskbl/recaps/020717a...

In those, I heard two different versions of the defense that was played.

Coach Saul talked about not have hand in face and being disappointed that his players weren't prepared to guard the two scorers on the team.

Simmons spoke about Central just hitting shots. At one point in the press conference (around 1:45), he said if we play them again they would be ready, "again", then spoke under his breath, "we were ready tonight"

What is your take? Was Coach Saul just being a coach and looking for any coaching point he could find? Is there any concerns that it seems like they were on completely different pages?

I wouldn't read too much into that. They'll figure it out during todays film session. Maybe Coach Phillips will channel Vince Lombardi during film? Read Jerry Kramer's "Instant Replay". : )

Coach does sound a little irritated in this presser.

Some of the shots he hit were really well defended. He was hitting NBA veteran-type shots. I know on at least a few occasions I turned to my son and said "I don't know how you stop that." Personally, I think the game was lost midway through the first half when we tried to be Marcus Keene instead of running our offense.

The defense has fallen off big time lately. It's hard to pinpoint why.

I would respectfully disagree. It's not really that hard to pinpoint why. We basically play defense with 4 people.

Just one game ago on Saturday versus Akron, they did a good job on defense. Same for at NIU. Definitely a couple bad performances in between.

[/QUOTE]There have been a couple solid defensive performances mixed in with a lot of bad ones. Before that, there were a lot of very good defensive performances with only a few bad ones. Even the games referenced, Ohio gave up 69 and 70 points, which is more points than Ohio gave up in 10 of the first 13 games.

I can't be certain what you're suggesting here, but I just don't see how changing one player can turn Ohio from a very good defensive team into a very bad one. I can that changing this, but it has been rather dramatic.

I don't know if our defense should be considered anywhere near as frustrating as our uncanny ability to give up offensive rebounds in bunches. Anyone will score when given three chances per possession. Why is Jaaron our leading rebounder lately?

You don't think flipping out a 6'10" senior and our only real rim presence for a 6'8" frosh would have much effect? Tony Campbell has missed half the season and he's still our leading rebounder and is second in blocked shots.

Sure, I understand that, but I think it's got to be more than that for the difference to be that dramatic. The defense has gone from great to awful.

Story of this team. Wildly inconsistent with the exception of Simmons lately.

KK cannot be counted on for defense (ever) or rebounding....and has been up and down offensively.

Dartis the same

Block is probably closest to being the next consistent....

But after that?

Carter and Taylor...no. Laster and Culver...no.

Again...WILL THIS TEAM WIN BACK-TO-BACK GAMES THE REST OF THIS SEASON?

They haven't since starting 3-0 in the MAC.

The only consistent thing....is giving up MASSIVE runs.

28-8 last night. Somone on the chat board tried to say it happens to even good teams.

C'mon. It happens to Ohio ALL THE DAMN TIME

19-4 (WMU), 17-0 (WMU), 19-4 (Toledo), 28-8 (CMU), 31-6 (WKU)

Good teams don't let that happen....again...and again...and again.

Guess Ohio just isn't a good team, right?

The problem I see with this team is it comes down to manufacturing an open look. Why teams get on big runs is because we cannot do so. Whether it has something to do with ball movement or personnel, it simply comes down to Simmons coming down the floor, a pass or two, and chuck it from the cheap seats. Our guys like to chuck from the perimeter, but we gotta be able to run something that gets something remotely close to a layup. Just watching schematically we gotta be able to create looks from our sets because the only guy who can create his own shot is Simmons.

I only got to see the first half on the ESPN3 on the computer but here I go to harp on Taylor again. He's not quick enough for his size to be a good rim protector on defense and the missed dunk was a wall of shame nominee. Is there a 6-9 high school player who can't throw one down from point blank range anymore? As I posted on at length in another thread, Saul needs to go about recruiting in a totally different way or this will be a .500 program more or less in the MAC every year. He needs to look at foreign players, keep a spot open for the possibility of a transfer from a P-5 school (or top mid or smaller transfer like Keene or like Moody who left Florida Atlantic and averaged 17 and 24 the next two seasons). There is no reason for a similar size school with similar facilities such as MTSU to be #41 in the RPI (with a pair of blowout wins over SEC teams) and Ohio be #127.

I'm in favor of what you're suggesting re: leaving that one scholly open, but other than that, to say he needs to approach recruiting differently -- I whole heartedly disagree. What he needs is for every scholarship player to be healthy, and able to play. Other than having one guy who isn't getting PT, the rest of the issues here are related to the health of three guys. Tony getting hurt exposed that, and Jaaron is going a great job covering it up still.

The RPI comparison you're making isn't really useful this year in my opinion. If Tony is in the mix, this is a drastically different team.

I don't know that it's an indication of not being a good team, but it sure as heck is an indication that the coaching is not doing a good job of making in-game adjustments to stop this eye-opening list of runs against them. Time-outs? Play calls? Substitutions?

Runs are prevalent in college BB. Every team has bad stretches during some games, but to be on the other end of so many dramatic runs like this is frustrating.

Find me another team that loses the guy widely considered it's best player, who is a senior, and doesn't struggle with some inconsistency. Creighton - lost Watson, and have been inconsistent after looking like a lock for a top 3 seed in March. Xavier - lost Sumner, same deal. IU, lost Anunoby, same deal.

Since you like using them, may I suggest you RELAX, and adjust YOUR EXPECTATIONS accordingly?

I felt the same thing. I thought several shot they took were well contested and they just hit them. I kept thinking he had to start missing...he didn't. I think in the end, no matter what we did, he hit those shots. That was demoralizing for me as a fan...it had to be demoralizing to our hugs as well.

We lost by 10 and gave up 41 points to the nations leading scorer. We missed 3 buckets from absolute point-blank range at the rim (Carter, Taylor, KK). Those alone make it a 4-point game.

Xavier lost Sumner and hasn't lost a game since. In fact, they're playing Villanova for a defacto Big East title game Saturday. Bad example.

Creighton struggled for a couple after losing Watson...but are 2-3 with a road win at Butler in there. They're aren't as good...but they'll still win a game or two in the NCAAs

IU was somewhat of a dumpster fire with Anunoby.

Bad examples.

Ohio let up huge runs with AC....see WKU, Iona, Marshall.

I'm not downplaying the loss of AC...but to pin the struggles of Ohio all on that is short-sighted.

This team is NOT good on defense. No matter what those damn analytics say ... you watch the games....do they past the eye test on defense? They struggle stopping the dribble drive. Last night they couldn't defend the 3ptr. They let a team that thrives by shooting 3ptrs outscore them 34-14 in the paint. Zero interior defense.

Would AC help fix some of these issues? Sure. But there are still issues.

That win over Akron was great! But to follow it up with such a dud vs. CMU shows what this team is all about....total inconsistency. They have the ability to play great at times...but the inability to string it together for a few games, or even two for that matter.

This team hasn't won back-to-back games since 3-0 MAC start....what gives anyone hope they can string 3 wins together in Cleveland?

Frustrating to watch...because I don't think it's a lack of talent. They guys are pretty damn good....but for some reason they can't perform at a consistent level. Is it coaching? Not sure. Desire? I hope not...except on the defensive end/rebounding where it does look like some guys aren't interested in committing on that side of the floor.

Agreed Sumner might be a bad example. The other two I think are good examples.

What gives me hope? Or interest?

Simple. I could opt to soak hours into rooting for other schools that I have an interest in - my Dad's Bearcats, my sister's Flyers - for examples. But those aren't MY alma mater. I have hope because I saw teams that struggled in 2005 and 2010 do it. Granted, those teams didn't lose a player like Tony to injury.

Not sure I would call scoring 87 points a dud. Usually that's a win. And Keene was just an alien last night and has been all season. Now, were there defensive lapses and missed wide open shots? Absolutely. More than there should have been. But yes, the inconsistency sucks.

Couldn't agree more. I'm a diehard Villanova fan (my dad is an alum and I've watched them since birth)....but gimmie the Bobcats any day of the week! I think the biggest difference between '05 and '10 and this year's team....simple. It's defense

Those teams could get stops in the MAC when they needed them. I'm not sure this team has it in them. And what we've seen with SaulBall the last few years...I'm not sure if that will ever happen. I'm hopeful...and I'll continue to watch. But I'm also a realist (maybe a pessimistic one at times...but I go off what I've seen)

...we'll see about Creighton. McDermott is a helluva coach and they have a lot of talent. I think Bluejays will be fine come March. IU we'll just have to disagree. That team had/had all kinds of issues this year.

Saul Ball will be better defensively next year than they were this year, the reason is simple: Younger players taking the place of KK and Tony that Saul can mold to what he wants from day one. That's a big difference. Guys like Carter and Culver will get better as well.

As for this year, I think they'll be in the hunt. They're going to have to rely on Carter to carry a load bigger than last night, but I think he will. The only thing I wish Saul & Co would do more of is switching up defenses on occasion. It just seems to be that being able to switch to some form of a zone, or a 3/4 court press/trap once in awhile could keep teams off balance. Obviously, being able to be effective in that switch up defense is necessary, but other teams do it, so I believe OUr team is capable.
