Time to replace the O'Shea thing with a more timely quip. Plus O'Shea will be retained by Bryant. Groce....

Gottfried to be let go they have already reached out to Archie Miller. Gonna be an interesting off season.

I've always held the belief that Archie, like his brother Sean, would hold out for a BIG job if he ever left UD. (i.e. not a lower level B1G school) The Alma Mater calling from the ACC is probably big enough to lure him out of Dayton.

Or maybe JC to NCSt. He's having another stellar year at BC (2-11, 9-17).

N.C. St. is a tough, tough job. Just ask all the coaches who came after Valvano, and when Valvano coached there, it was a different era. He was not afraid to bend the rules.

If Archie were to leave, and I'm hearing that Dayton will do everything it can to keep him, Illinois would be a far better fit. Big 10 hoops should be an easier road to hoe over the next few years than the ACC, at least until Coach K and Ol' Roy move on...

The TOS thing is legendary on this board because he kept applying for every job vacancy on the East Coast that came up during his tenure at OHIO. No other coach before or since applied for as many different jobs while at OHIO. There's only one TOS, accept no substitutes! ;-)

Maybe, but if I'm Archie, I'm waiting on Indiana or Ohio State to open up. He's on the short list, IMO, and I think his landing spot is bigger than NC St.

IU is the one to watch: WHAT IS TOM CREAN'S BUYOUT TODAY?

It is amazing that Crean was brought in to get IU off the mat post Sampson. He has done that and made them credible again yet the general populace has ne er taken a shine to him. He gets booed at HS games and compared to Knight. He will never be Knight and that makes him not good enough for many . He called out some slackers on the team the other day for not leading and not contributing to anything but their dreams of the NBA and the public melted down. Calipari did the same thing and put his player through a 3 1/2 hour practice. Coach K took teeam gear away and barred them from the locker room but Crean gets chastised for calling Blackmon out for being self serving and screwing with the locker room.

Archie is the hot name for the last 8 weeks at NC St. Illinois would love to throw money at him and compliment the Lovie hire. New AD has the boosters blessing. He just made a stellar Vball hire for 300K. Dayton and those schools that lose an Archie or Cuonzo will be hustling as well.

This is going to be an interesting Coaching Carousel. Mizzou, Illini and a few more will be interesting to see how they go. There are a good many fanbases that are getting itchy.

I am not a Crean fan but he has righted that ship and has it headed in the right direction. They want National Championships and Blue Blood status restored. They will be looking for a saviour but I am not sure Glass will pull that string. Oddly enough Purdue and Painter are playing well enough to make any Hoosier fan livid

Welp. Pitt has 4 seniors and two of them are the top 2 scorers in the ACC. And they lost to Virginia Tech last night to continue their challenge for last place in the ACC. I'm not sure if BC is going to blow again next season, but if they improve at all, Pitt will go winless in the ACC.

And somebody gave Stallings a SIX year deal??? Can you say "golden parachute?" He could buy a new set of hair.

And I've always thought he'd go that route. Here's the question: With the lackluster fan support they get, how "great" of a job is OSU, as compared to IU, etc? Yeah, the resources are unlimited, the pay rise will be huge, and the facilities are sparkling, but the basketball environment is well below where he is now. At least at NC State, in the ACC, hoops is king. I don't know if that matters or not, but it's the truth. Right now, UD is a better program than OSU, and has a better fan following. I can't speak to the following at NC State, but based on the pre-game reception Gottfried got vs The Heels the other night, they have expectations of better than they're seeing.

You make a good point re: Itchy fan bases. This will be an interesting spring for sure. The IU thing is interesting because of where they were when Crean started. They were in a situation that compared to how Cronin started at UC - bottom of the barrel, with recruiting being in shambles. I think IU would be foolish to cut ties right now.

so with all of these potential openings, how likely is it that Saul at least gets a call on some of them?

Unless something magical happens this Spring I'd have to say very unlikely.

Not sure why Archie would leave Dayton?

He's proven you can get to the Elite Eight there...

They are one of the best in maybe the best non-power league (B1G, ACC, Big XII, Pac 12, SEC, Big East)

He gets paid pretty damn good there....

Has great arena...amazing fan support.

I know the alma mater is a big draw....but man, just seems like a much stiffer hill to climb.

I know some coaches are ego maniacs that think they are the guy who can turn things around....and leave a good thing in the rearview mirror.

Hope Archie isn't one of those...he's good for UD hoops.

The Reason Archie would leave is dollars, otherwise I agree with you bshott. He's in the $1mil range from what I understand. B1G and ACC schools would probably triple that.

Think about Shaka Smart, who was well paid and super successful at VCU. He held out for awhile until Texas came calling with, I think, around $3 million.

Gottfried is making $2.5 milion at NCSU...doubt they'd go more than that for Miller. My guess is probably less than $2M.

Thad makes about $3.4M at OSU...doubt Gene gets near that with this hire. Probably closer to $2M range.

Archie is $1.1M (two years ago) at UD...I'm guessing that's up to around $1.3 or $1.4 now.

I know money is the carrot at the end of the stick. But damn...$1.4 million at a job where you are well-loved and successful....C'MON!

Best thing I ever heard Saul Phillips tell me was "$550,000 a year?!?! If I can't live on that in Athens, I'm doing something wrong. I'll buy the damn Batmobile if I want" (Insert some other color things)

I'd say how much Gene Smith, or the NC State AD are willing to pay depends on how much pressure they are under to win, and what kind of outside the budget money they get to hire the right coach. I'm in agreement, and I'm biased - Archie is in one of the top 15-20% of jobs in college basketball. UD is a better job than some big money conference schools, although part of that is the result of what Archie and his staff have accomplished.

Word is that Archie is up around $2M. Each offseason, a donor is asked to step up and cover another $250K per year. When Florida was looking for a coach, I heard two donors were needed to add another $500K. Archie is leaving Dayton. Just like Oliver Purnell and Brian Gregory before him. Archie is smart like his brother Sean. Sean could've bolted from X but waited for a blue-chip basketball program to open. To me, that job is Indiana for Archie. Word was that in 2015 IU was going to fire Crean (who got a reprieve thanks to a surprise NCAA bid). First call was to Brad Stevens, second call would be Archie. Stevens isn't leaving the Cs so...

The timing also seems right for Archie. He has had the luxury of this Senior class that he knew would get him to the NCAA Tourney each year. Gave him time to be choosy. Now, he has some nice pieces left and a great recruiting class coming so the NCAAs should keep rolling. But if IU calls, he goes. A lot of folks feel like he would go if OSU calls. I guess they're probably right but I think Archie wants to go where basketball is king.

I would love to have enough money that you could justify giving up $250K a year to pay a coach. I wouldn't do it but I'd love to have that kind of money.

I have heard the Home City Ice CEO Tom Sedler pays most or all of Chris Mack's (Xavier) salary. Someone told me that Xavier's contract is actually with Sedler making Mack a subcontractor. I doubt that's true but would be interesting to see that contract.

NC State and the boosters want Archie. If he ends up at State, he will make Gottfried money or more - I'm guessing $3 million as others will be throwing money at him as well.
