Another Ohio recruit — Myles Che entered the portal. Didn’t realize he landed at Chattanooga. Lee liked his transfer post. Take that for what it’s worth.

Not a bad freshman year.

Lipscomb guard Derrin Boyd is in the portal.

Averaged 18ppg last season while hitting a shocking 44% from three.

This is a guy who is likely looking to transfer up.

A MAC school used to be a step up from a conference like the ASun, but not so much any more. So I agree a step up would likely be A10, MVC, etc.

I'm wondering how much longer the A-10 or MVC remain steps up from the MAC. Especially if more realignment happens that includes other teams like UMass leaving - Dayton seems like they could make a jump to the Big East and would fit right in.

For as long as they keep outspending MAC teams on basketball budget. The average A10 bball budget is more than 2x the average MAC bball budget. the MVC average is ~50% higher. You get what you pay for.

I think we recruited Wheeling's Marcus Johnson out of high school, but can't remember. He's a BIG guard (6'7" and what looks about 230-250 at least). Has a great handle for a big guy and shot 45% from three last season. This might be my new favorite player in the portal. Went to Akron SVSM High School.

He averaged 20ppg last season on a really bad team vs VERY small-time competition.

Greencat, I wouldn't agree with you about "very" small time competition. Yes, D2 but a league that usually has teams with good talent, like West Liberty, Fairmont, etc. But I still agree with you that we have to be careful of being overly impressed with his numbers vs D2.

His team was 10-18 and lost to that Notre Dame College in Cleveland that is being phased out.

He was 9-26 shooting in that game including 2-11 from deep = 18%

Shouldn't Boals be looking for a big guy who actually plays center?

We have reached out to Josh Corbin from Robert Morris. He also spent time at Winthrop. 6'3" and averaged 13.4 at RMU. Mostly a three point shooter. Led RMU in minutes per game and assists. From Gahanna Lincoln.

He is intriguing. Oakland showed what a sharpshooter can do. I don't know where he'd fit if all return. I don't want to take too many mins away from Reef, EJ4, AJB or heck, even Ajay. We need a frontcourt guy bad. If Wiz did indeed leave give me an 8 and 8 guy.

This is what I find interesting about our portal approach so far. A lot of 2 guards. Seems like Boals is trying to replace the lost outside shooting in Miles. AJB is coming off an injury, EJ4 took a step back.

If Wiz in fact decided not to use his last year, I think we’ll see front court, shooter, PG added.

I'm wondering how much longer the A-10 or MVC remain steps up from the MAC. Especially if more realignment happens that includes other teams like UMass leaving - Dayton seems like they could make a jump to the Big East and would fit right in.
A year or so ago I would have said Dayton was a likely switch to the Big East with their fellow Catholic schools, but I can see them staying in the A-10. They'll pack their place no matter what conference they are in, they have the name to schedule top non-con programs, and they'll be the front runner for the AQ every year. The big driver to switch will be $$$.

But will somebody pony up to hire Anthony Grant? Not that Dayton would have trouble finding a new coach. It's a good step-up job for a younger coach.

Two front court guys from Xavier have entered the portal: Sasa Ciani, 6-9, and
Kachi Nzeh.

I wonder if this is going to be the trend with failed P5 attempts. Go back to the team you left, if there’s no love lost.

I think the NCAA shouldn’t allow a player to transfer back to the school they left originally. And yes, I know that means we wouldn’t have gotten Jason Carter. Akron doesn’t win the MAC without Ali Ali.

Just looking at who Boals recently followed — NIU’s Yanic Konan Niederhäuser and Arkansas’ Layden Blocker. Could be in the mix.

Both pretty interesting.

Yanic's per 40 numbers are solid -- including 4.3 blocks. Fouls a lot though -- not quite a Wiz in that regard, but it's a problem.

Blocker was very, very highly recruited. That sort of athleticism in a PG is rare at the MAC level, so even though there's some stuff in his numbers that's pretty scary, if you can get a guy like that, you should.

This is what you totally miss! The courts have stripped the NCAA of any control in this matter. They had a rule on sitting a year if you entered the transfer portal twice, and the court challenges and the OHIO Attorney General effectively struck that down, the NCAA, as much as so many want to blame them, has given control up to state legislators and the courts. State High School Assoctions have also had to concede to the courts, as evidence to NIL being legal in 27 states
