Let's celebrate. The window to enter the portal has now closed. We made it without any big departures. Very few teams in any conference can say that.
We'll still hear of portal entrants in the coming days (not necessarily from Ohio) because the deadline pertains to a timestamped electronic communication to athletic department personnel. Texting a coach before last night's deadline would suffice and the player could still actually enter the portal tomorrow.
I'm not even sure "deadlines" matter at all anymore, but what are the "deadlines"?

May 1st is the deadline to ENTER, correct? Or is there another window as the season gets closer? What is the deadline to choose a school?

I don't think the guys in the portal are under the gun to pick a new destination, but...those who are exploring the NBA draft process have until May 29 to withdraw if they want to return to college next season. Some of them are actually in the portal while trying to be candidates for the NBA too. The times we live in.

We've done remarkably well in retention. The only starter-worthy talent we have lost in the last several years was a 5th year guy that went to Virginia to play for his Dad's best friend and a guy that went on to be one of the best players in the nation for a final 4 team. Is it Athens, is it Boals, dumb luck? Probably all 3.
It's all 3, but it all starts with a HC with a vision and who establishes a culture.

He recruits guys who fit that culture, and part of that is guys who buy in to the team/family.

Throw in a beautiful campus, some decent success and a little luck and you have what we have.

Be grateful we have Boals!

HC must only be important in college basketball. Look over at the football thread. The experts there have said the HC is loved and respected by the players and was the obvious and outstanding hire when former retired, same Athens and great bowl success and yet lots have hit the portal.

College football has changed far more in the last year than basketball has. A new playoff structure, new conferences, and very clear writing on the wall that the G5 will be broken off from the P5. A lot more incentive (not to mention money) to move to a school on the top tier in football than in basketball.

Deadline to enter is hard, that is until some player files suit. No deadline to accept an offer except eligibility issues, which is one area the courts haven’t attacked.

Staff news — looks like Casey Crawford has taken Director of Ops position at Stony Brook. Also spoke with someone in athletic department yesterday. Men’s basketball raised a little over $200K NIL dollars for this season. That’s nearly double from ago. Trending in the right direction.

Aren't eligibility issues discriminatory? If we move to the employee model, why would it be necessary to be an enrolled student?

Portal life is so weird. Some freshman at Quinnipiac just parlayed 8ppg shooting 37% from three over 24 games into a scholarship at Washington State.

Wouldn't Washington State now be out of the P5 with the death of the PAC, leaving them homeless?

The WSU/Oregon St. thing is sticky and complicated.

This recent article explains it pretty good.

Speaking of JUCO, Boals recently started following JUCO Advocate. Really easing into the idea of that channel for potentially supplementing the roster.

That doesn't really dive into the juice of the argument, which is WSU and OSU won their court case against the PAC 12 and have complete control of the board and how any remaining revenue in the conference would be distributed- including Washington's CFP berth and all of the PAC 12's NCAA Tournament win shares. An agreement of that revenue was reached in December, but wasn't disclosed.

The prevailing rumor is that WSU and OSU will be set up very nicely for the future if any other conference decides to come calling for their services. They also control all of the PAC 12 Network, which will produce their games on The CW this coming season. For anyone who actually watched the P12 Network or had access, that's no small change as their production quality was top tier. We'll see how that shakes out with The CW deal, though.

Not a transfer, but Barlow and Martin recently followed a 6’9 HS PF that’s unsigned. Looks like he didn’t play circuit/AAU. 1st team All-State in Bama. Some pretty bonkers numbers — 26ppg, 14rpg, 3bpg.

I’d prefer a transfer but the kid is interesting if in fact we’re taking a look. Just received offers this calendar year from Stetson and Gardner-Webb.

Kinda sorta similar to Vaderwalker (sp?) but he's playing against small-time competition it looks like. That Geneva AL is a spot in the road near the Florida state line. If we could be sure he won't transfer to Auburn or Florida State or whatever school closer to his home town as soon as he gets the chance?

We just got a verbal commitment from a Florida kid who is a top five recruit in program history. We have Florida and Georgia kids on the roster who apparently really like it here and are part of the core group. Could any leave in the future? Sure. But get that kid in the door to begin with and then worry about making your program worthwhile enough to stay.

Seems like a skilled big that would be a great get with our last scholarship. Nothing wrong with growing your program from within.

Boals has recently started following former Wyoming signee Dominic Pagonis, who requested release from his NLI after Wyoming’s coach left a few days ago. He’s a wing, not a big.
