There's plenty of amateurism left in college sports. Just not at this level of college sports, which has become a multi-billion dollar industry.

There are a lot of people who seem to imply that their interest in college sports stems from the amateurism, but very few of those same people have a DIII bracket pool with their friends right now. It feels like there's a hope to have their cake and eat it, too.

I missed where Freedom of Speech means nobody is allowed to disagree with you.

Like I said, feel free to explain where I'm wrong and what this has to do with Freedom of Speech.

It's never been amateur at the P5 level and to believe otherwise is naive. The NCAA can label it that way, but if they ever truly enforced the values they preach in their commercials to the masses every March, the power conferences would have almost no schools left for tournament play. Every once in a while though, they'll slap some small school on the wrist just to show they still have this illusion of power.
You folks are juding the entire body of Intercollegiate atheltics by the elite programs of two sports. Ignoring the tens of thousands of real student athletes who benefit greatly from the mission of college athletics.
I'm judging how the NCAA enforces the power programs at the elite level you talk about, because that's where the NCAA and their tournament makes its money. But please continue to be the only person who knows anything about college athletics here. I keep forgetting.

The NIL killed amateur basketball the same way a doctor kills a patient by taking them off life support. Technically, they did it. But that's not what caused the patient to die.

NIL might be tweaked somehow but it isn't going away. It doesn't seem smart to say something that might be taken as you aren't for your guys getting any. Anything you say can and will be used against you in recruiting.

He always seemed the leader type even in college. It does seem like he might have been drunk or, more likely, something put him in a really foul mood and he said something he wished he hadn't after he calmed down. We've all been there.

I'm not saying he doesn't believe what he said or that certain facts aren't true but that doesn't make how it could be used against him any better.

If coaches can leave for bigger, better jobs after they've sat in the living room of a recruit selling his parents on his program why shouldn't these kids be able to transfer and play immediately?

This is an example of how social media makes mountains out of mole hills. Boals' tweet was honest and truthful. Dude lost 2 big-time players last year to NILs and I am sure it is infuriating to the Mid-Majors. We already were behind the 8 ball and now we have to fight to keep guys like Sears, Hunter, A.J. Brown etc. You've got coaches doing so many shady and unsavory things -- I will take my coach tweeting something that the fan base of one of the MOST CORRUPT universities EVER doesn't like.

But are they truly "shady and unsavory" since they've been made legal. I didn't say right but they are legal. The best thing he could have done was simply stayed off Twitter. Say it in an interview but not where it can be so widely and instantly circulated and taken out of context. While people are betting on games in record numbers, interest as evidenced by butts in seats continues to decline. As BTC said, in two sports at the D 1 level, the students playing sports is nothing like it used to be.

They aren't.

The NCAA convinced people that college athletes making money was somehow shady and immoral. Now people automatically associate it as such.

We're honestly through the looking glass. 3 years ago there was a massive FBI investigation and people went to jail. Big programs were implicated. Players have been getting paid under the table for decades, and everybody knows it.

But somehow it's this system -- above board and out in the open -- that people see as shady while defending the system where people were breaking the law and actually being shady.

I'd happily accept an amendment that allows for exceptions when a coach leaves. Seems fair enough to me.

The free transfer creates a minor league system for P5 schools. Since my favorite team is a mid-major that has been heavily impacted by this rule change, it shouldn't come as a surprise that I don't like the rule as it currently stands.

And there was always a review process if you wanted it. Coaching changes, personal hardship, injuries, family issues, etc all solid amendments.

I'm not sure transfer anywhere, anytime is good business for anyone involved. Certainly not academically, but I know thats an aside for everyone.

It's crazy we're watching this kid from CMU - who is averaging TWELVE - transfer because now hes too good for the MAC. We all saw it coming from the early weeks of the season. TWELVE POINTS. And we knew he was gone.

I wish him well, but I think there should be some sort of two year stay commitment requirement or something. Again - waivers apply to circumstances. But one and dones will kill the P5. We need to have some sort of commitment from these kids. Recruiting is EXPENSIVE, and a lot of them are now arriving on campus thinking they'll be here for 6 months and ship off to Ohio State.
