This is a good test for Akron and Dambrot. Does he want to stay until he retires (he's 58, so that's not out of the question), or try to rebuild a program he has some ties to? Either way, he should be able to get another 5-6 years of guaranteed income. Nice position to be in.

Past ties or not, if Dambrot turned down a huge pay day from USF, I just can't see him making the jump to an A-10 school he has already turned down twice. Maybe USF isn't a dream job either, but the point is if he is open to going elsewhere, there's almost no question he could do better than Duquesne.

Good point. I didn't know about USF.

Rumor here is that he has been offered $7 million over 7 years plus a $40 million arena upgrade. My sense is that he's tired of waiting for Akron to invest in the program. Given the talent he loses this year, might be a smart choice.

According to my friend the Duquesne alum, the arena upgrade is gonna happen anyway. Now, for Dambrot, given the Akron arena situation, that could be significant. And the money difference isn't something to sneeze at for him at this point in his life.

Duquesne NEEDS to offer 1M to get anyone decent. I'm not certain they will.

And he's probably also tired of never winning an NCAA Tournament game at Akron #GooseEggNCAAWins

this is all just a big show to give his agent some leverage when negotiating the next contract extension with Akron. nothing to see here.

I will say I do appreciate his loyalty to Akron. Hopefully he stays and Fiami gets a new coach that can compete at the top of the MAC with OU and Akron moving forward.

His son just transferred from Akron to Pitt. I think he's gone.

Jeff Goodman reporting it as well. Dambrot has agreed to the Duquesne deal. This is huge.

Yeah, here's the story:

Pretty disastrous for Akron and not good for the MAC. Amazing to think about a perennial power in the league, but without Dambrot, the Akron job kind of sucks. The school is saddled with the awful football stadium debt, facing general turmoil in the institution itself, and even a decade of tons of success couldn't fill their crappy little arena. I am seriously wondering what kind of replacement they'll get.

Don't particularly like KD, but he's good for the MAC (a good villain). On to the next one.

I've nailed another one. Please, folks, hold your applause!

Seriously, though, I'm shocked.

So the best coach in the MAC over the last decade...statistically speaking...leaves for a job that is a total wasteland. Yeah....I'd say that's a bad look for the MAC.

Dambrot couldn't win in March.

For all the talk of the Zips as the MAC's premier program, let's not forget they have NEVER won an NCAA Tournament game.

People don't remember Jim Christian's MAC Championship at Ohio. Nobody is going to remember Keith Dambrot's 2016-2017 Zips that won the MAC but failed to get it done when it counted.

I'm very curious to see who they hire. Id rank this opening above any other MAC job except Ohio and Kent. There will be transfers, but if the new coach can avoid a completely emptying cupboard, he'll have more talent than most new MAC coaches start with.

I'm fully eating crow on this one. I wrongly assumed Dambrot would retire from Akron and was perfectly content to play out his career there. Again don't think Dambrot will duplicate his Akron results at Duquesne, that's one tough place to win at and it's an afterthought in a crowded Pittsburgh sports market.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is also reporting this but references the ESPN Goldman report as the source.

Agree that it's not a good look, but the A10 is a significant step up from the MAC. He took a nice salary bump to go someplace where, if he wins the regular season title (or even comes close), he'll very likely make the tournament. That hasn't happened in the MAC since 1999.

It's a been a dormant program for a lot of years, but they're building a new arena and now they have a new coach who wins. They have a long way to go, but he already has a much better foundation than he would ever have had at Akron.

9 appearances in the MACC in 11 seasons but only 3 wins, and zero wins in the Dance. Dambrot isn't leaving the MAC because he out grew it, its because he couldn't truly dominate it. Not a bad look on us at all.

Several Zips already saying they're transferring. It's looking like a full rebuild there.

I'm not sure they're building a new arena. I was of the understanding they were renovating the Palumbo Center that's there now.
