Why live in the past and show how much you despise Christian?

Some think he did a good job here and merely took a better (higher salary) position as many, if not most, corporate people might do.

But the facts are the following. Only Russ Finsterwald had a better winning percentage in Ohio history. Christian won 70% of his games here and almost 75% of MAC games. Groce meanwhile won just 60% of his overall games here and 53% of MAC games. Groce got hot during his and we had a good run. He too, like Christian, may be looking for work soon.
Yeah, I don't really get it. I understand why he's not everyone's favorite former coach, but I'll never understand the vitriol (and yes, I've heard all the reasons).

+1. Frankly, I'm pleased with how it all worked out. I have no qualms, and I wouldn't mind if he ended up in Oxford.
I feel like JC just used OU as an escape capsule from TCU and the Big 12. I also think he had one foot out the door as soon as he walked through the door. I also have a problem comparing Groce's record to JC's because of what they inherited. Groce walked into a rebuild and when he left Ohio was stacked. JC walked into a roster that was stacked and what he left behind was a rebuild. Billy Hahn and JC are the only former coaches that I actually do not remember fondly for no other reason than when they departed (1 fired and 1 for another job) the programs were not in a good place.

Although I will say this about Billy, he was entertaining as hell and man could he go after an official! There were times when I thought his head was going to literally explode!
Groce walked into a rebuild at Ohio? I don't see the roster he inherited as being a rebuild:

No. Name Pos. Ht. Wt. Cl. Hometown/Previous School
11 Adedipe, Adetunji F 6-5 215 SO Orange Village, Ohio/Orange
3 Allen, Michael G 6-0 180 SR Detroit, Mich./Cloud County C.C./Daytona Beach C.C.
Bassett, Armon G 6-1 176 JR Terre Haute, Ind./Terre Haute South
2 Coleman, Steven G 6-4 200 FR Melbourne, Fla./Eau Gallie
24 Freeman, Tommy G 6-5 180 SO Muncie, Ind./Central
32 Nagtzaam, Zach C 6-11.5 255 RS FR Ayr, Ontario/Southwood Secondary
25 Orr, Justin F 6-6 205 SR Cincinnati, Ohio/Murray State
44 Sayles, Asown F 6-5 210 JR McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport
33 Tillman, Jerome F 6-6 235 SR Beavercreek, Ohio/Beavercreek
12 van Kempen, Kenneth C 6-10 265 JR Weert, Netherlands
1 Washington, DeVaughn F 6-7 215 SO Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville
That's fair. But he definitely added to and improved what he inherited. JC in no way did the same. He lived off of Groces players and then bolted.
JC didn't leave an empty cupboard. But he did leave for a higher profile job, with higher pay which is something many, if not most people do in this day. Jim Snyder and loyalty are long gone. He 'bolted' for a number of reasons including having won 70% of his game as Ohio. I don't blame JC for leaving. Most coaches, given the opportunity, would have probably done the same when they have a chance to go to higher profile job. Most coaches do have an ego.

Maybe he left a couple boxes of mac and cheese and but when JC left Ohio was very lean. I'm sorry but that's a rebuild to me. Just look at the Ohio record during Saul's first year. That screams rebuild.

Part of that lean cupboard plays for the Knicks now.

This notion that Christian was using Ohio as a stepping stone is utterly silly. Brad Bates, an AD with a truly awful track record that includes the neutering of football and basketball in Oxford, offered him a lottery ticket in the form of the BC job. Any one of us on this board would have cashed in that ticket. There was no conspiracy or backstabbing.

Christian wasn't warm and cuddly like our current coach, but it's quite clear to me that expected to build a program here. When someone roughly doubles your pay to do the same job, and allows you to probably more than double the pay of your assistants, you take the damn job. It's not that hard to figure out.

The record is a direct factor of the players on the roster not fitting Saul's system. Saul's first year we had an NBA player and a player that would win the MAC POTY the next season. We had one of my favorite Bobcats ever, Treg Setty. We also had a point guard who refused to share the ball until it was certain he wouldn't be able to get a shot off. Some of the blame for that season has to fall on Saul's shoulders for allowing that kind of play to continue all season long. JC benched Bean for that type of play and he came out of it doing what the coach wanted. That's not what Saul does though. He brings in players you don't have to worry about not playing the game his way. Saul came in as a Vegan and found a freezer full of steak.

THIS. Anything else on the topic is just absurd. Ohio got a good deal out of the situation, so did Coach Christian. Nothing else needs to be said really.

I'll take Groce's 3 NCAA Tournament wins over Christian winning 70% of his games and tying for a MAC Regular Season Championship every....single......time. Last time I checked, JC has been a Division One coach for 15 years and has 0 NCAA Tourney wins.

In this league, it's about winning the MAC Tournament championship. Nobody remembers who won the MAC regular season title if you don't back it up in Cleveland in March.
Yet, Groce, who you seem to worship will be looking for a job soon. He left for greener pastures, he just chose a greener pasture than JC. Both are good coaches, you just choose to despise one of them. That's your choice.
Groce-3 NCAA Tourney wins at OHIO>Christian-0 NCAA Tourney wins in 15 years as a D-One Coach. I like my choice. #6-48 #NumbersDontLie
Congratulations goes out to John Groce. He made the 2010 tournament by taking a huge gamble on a kid who had no desire to go to school, and got into some trouble off the court as well. Basically the definition of a rental, who would have made our school look great if we made it to the Sweet 16 and it came out that he was ineligible.

In 2012, we came dangerously close to coughing up a sizable late lead in the MAC final to Akron. Cooper threw in a few crazy shots, and we were very close to Akron have their "Leon Williams tip" moment. Without green and white glasses on, that game was a coin flip. The semifinal against Buffalo was sort of the same way.

Unfortunately for Groce, his luck is not exactly transferring over to Illinois. His gambles on questionable kids have mostly fallen flat, and they aren't having any conference tournament magic. Maybe the Michigan plane delay is the break he needs to keep his job for one more year.

Is Groce a good coach or an opportunistic coach? Hmm, wonder what Illinois fans think of that question after being the only team Rutgers' feels confident playing in the Big Ten the last two years. Tournament wins are without question what we are looking for as a program, but stop acting like Groce was some legend.

Lost by 20 to a team in practice jerseys, different shoes and fresh off the plane.

Honestly though, props to Groce for getting that pay day.

Illinois fans seem to be in meltdown mode. I was hoping Coach Groce could make a miracle run, but this is the worst possible result. You get smoked by a team that just survived a near fatal abortive take off in high winds. They come clad in practice jerseys and a hodge podge of shoes.

I suppose you could make the argument that Michigan feels they literally have a new lease on life and are glad to live another day. Therefore, they can play loose and stress free. I suppose the speculation now turns to wear Coach Groce goes from here. As I have stated in a previous thread, perhaps he should consider openings in the Missouri Valley Conference, rather than the MAC or places like Cleveland State or Youngstown State. Someone more well versed than I might be able to weave through the MVC possibilities.

Indeed.

Read he has a highly rated recruiting class coming in. Maybe that will help him stick around.

I think the only real possible opening in the MVC might be a perfect fit for him, Indiana State. I don't know a thing about his contract status but after a promising start under Greg Lansing they have been on a slow decline to an 11-20 record this year.

The key for any of these guys is to go to a place where you can win. The payday is nice but you'll find yourself looking for a job in a few years. Has anyone ever been to Champaign Urbana? It's in a cornfield. Then you have all the top schools recruiting Chicago. Hmmmm...where should I go....Duke or Illinois? Kentucky or Illinois? Michigan, Michigan State, etc. You get the picture.

They say nice guys finish last. At least he doesn't act like the coach who finished next to last in the ACC this year. If you catch my drift...

Any coach who takes OHIO to the Sweet 16 and one FT away from the Elite 8 is a legend in my book.

I was with my family my Senior year in Athens and stopped Coach Christian if he would get a picture with me and my nephew who was wearing an OU football jersey.

He said no, that he was too busy and proceeded down Court Street. He had nowhere to be.

I was so taken aback after dealing with Groce.

Glad he is gone and hope he loses every game at every school he coaches at. Just a jerk.

Interesting. I can't imagine Snyder, Bandy, Nee, Hahn, Hunter, TOS, Groce or Saul acting like that.

I'm happy we're onto the the semi's of the MAC.

Doesn't take a rocket scientist to analyze those who apparently hate JC.

Jim Christian acted counter to everything I love about Ohio. He did not embody our shared spirit and I am glad he is gone.

I don't think that the fact that I have this opinion takes away from where our team is currently.

Saul Phillips embodies what is special about being a Bobcat and I see many years of continued success.

Love how the article describes Brad Bates leaving to become a consultant. Is he going to consult on how to be an effective fundraiser while running athletic programs into the ground?
