Looking forward to seeing JC back in the MAC following next season. Knowing how this guy operates, I'm sure his agent is already calling MAC schools because he knows he's a goner after year 4. TCU...Part 2. Bobcat Nation thanks you JC for taking the money and splitting town after 24 months.

Why live in the past and show how much you despise Christian?

Some think he did a good job here and merely took a better (higher salary) position as many, if not most, corporate people might do.

But the facts are the following. Only Russ Finsterwald had a better winning percentage in Ohio history. Christian won 70% of his games here and almost 75% of MAC games. Groce meanwhile won just 60% of his overall games here and 53% of MAC games. Groce got hot during his and we had a good run. He too, like Christian, may be looking for work soon.

Yeah, I don't really get it. I understand why he's not everyone's favorite former coach, but I'll never understand the vitriol (and yes, I've heard all the reasons).

JC hurt not just by the MAC-like talent on his roster, but also the MAC-like crowds in the stands.

Christian. As much as I defend Christian around here it would hurt much less if he took that job than if Groce did.

For the life of me, I don't get why people don't like some of our past coaches. I wish everyone well, even Coach O' Shea who clearly didn't want be here as much as he did the East Coast. I wish Coach Hahn well and that was truly a spectacle with two future NBA players on the roster and finishing near the bottom of the MAC.

Coach Christian is going to be at Boston College for as long as he wants to be, unless he doesn't improve from this season, and I doubt that will happen. Coach Thompson at Georgetown will be fired before Coach Christian will be. For the record, I like both coaches and don't think either will be fired.

My guess is the Jesuit powers that be at both institutions realize their heyday has come and gone and they can live with being in the mix. Coach Thompson has to live in the shadow of his father who is still a larger than life presence in DC. Boston College realizes they can't compete with other schools in an arms race where they have to also fund a Division I football program. Think about it, how many MAC schools can say their last two coaches went to Power 6 conferences. Better yet, how many of the 300+ Division I basketball member schools can say their last two coaches went to Power 6 schools?

I feel like JC just used OU as an escape capsule from TCU and the Big 12. I also think he had one foot out the door as soon as he walked through the door. I also have a problem comparing Groce's record to JC's because of what they inherited. Groce walked into a rebuild and when he left Ohio was stacked. JC walked into a roster that was stacked and what he left behind was a rebuild. Billy Hahn and JC are the only former coaches that I actually do not remember fondly for no other reason than when they departed (1 fired and 1 for another job) the programs were not in a good place.

Although I will say this about Billy, he was entertaining as hell and man could he go after an official! There were times when I thought his head was going to literally explode!

While I agree it was not a rebuild, I don't think the roster was really functional either. Pieces with no cogent direction. BTW Basset was a redshirt transfer that came with Groce, Naatz never got on the floor 19 total minutes in 10 games, Tunji came in with JG as a walk on from the FB team. Dobbs and COleman were both frosh with little experience and unproven skills.

You did not have Waters and Dobbs on the roster you listed. They both played sparingly in spite of the short roster.

Short roster without a full compliment of scholarship players and further decimated by a few supensions over the course of the year. Looking back I guess it could easily have been called a rebuilding year. Had enough room on the roster to sign Horne, Baltic, Keely, Cooper, Kinney and transfer Basset for the following year. With only 2 seniors bringing on 7 of a 13 man roster is a lot.

Contrast that to WVU asst. coach Billy Hahn today.

While Huggy sometimes looks like his head is going to explode, Billy is seemingly always lounging on the team bench's first chair with his inside arm resting on the scorer's table, just another calm spectator.

I tend agree with these sentiments. I still can't exactly get my head around the whole JC era. He had a very good record in conference, and lost virtually every game against a competent non-conference foe. In these games he sometimes seemed not to really care. His body language was that of disinterest. This has led me to speculate that he really did have his mind on getting out of town. He seemed so disengaged at times. Perhaps, I just couldn't read him, but he perplexed me and still does.

There isn't a school in the MAC and maybe a couple (maybe not) of the 300+ Division I schools in the nation whose two previous coaches left to coach at Power 6 schools. Coach Groce and Coach Christian were two totally different personalities. Not that I could glean much from the brief conversations I had with both of them. However, they seemed completely comfortable in their own skin. You can't say that about everyone in their position.

Unlike Coach O'Shea who seem to put himself in the running for any East Coast job (hence the infamous TOS,) Coach Groce and Coach Christian weren't putting their names out there, the jobs came their way. I wish Coach O'Shea well and even Coach Hahn well. There has never been a coach in MAC history (Coach Hahn) who had two future NBA players on his roster and finished near the bottom of the MAC. Yet, I hardly hear any animus against him. He simply would lose all sense of judgement and perspective when faced with a bad call etc.

Not sure why some would expend their energy against a former coach who didn't leave us nearly in the shape others have. Let's be grateful for what we have with Coach Phillips and let those who have coached here move on with their careers. I think we have a bright future and we are, as we always have been with fans and facilities, the envy of the MAC!

JC didn't leave an empty cupboard. But he did leave for a higher profile job, with higher pay which is something many, if not most people do in this day. Jim Snyder and loyalty are long gone. He 'bolted' for a number of reasons including having won 70% of his game as Ohio. I don't blame JC for leaving. Most coaches, given the opportunity, would have probably done the same when they have a chance to go to higher profile job. Most coaches do have an ego.
