Well said Shame.

I also wonder how those that feel Simmons leaving is an injustice also feel about college athletes being paid. If you are one that feels they are paid because they get a free education then you must acknowledge that Simmons fulfilled that "contract" and should now be free to move on.
+1

Too many people look at sports as a charity. Well guess what, that was maybe 50 years ago where it was in the spirit of amateurism. This is a business people and if the kid served his obligation by graduating (which he is going to do in the next 48 hours) then I cannot fault him for leaving.

Not only that, if a kid had a chance to go to Harvard law to increase his/her chances of becoming a key politician would you tell him/her no even if he/her initially started at say, Ohio State? So what's the problem with Jaaron going to Michigan to increase his chances of making the league. It is insanely stupid how people think the kid can't hack it all of a sudden because he's leaving. All those negatives coming out of the cobwebs in the last 72 hours are hysterical. If he wanted to come back, you all would be dancing on rooftops for his return and you know it. And yes, some of you are going to tell me otherwise, of those how did you treat LeBron when he came back? Exactly.

So with that, Jaaron is a fool not to take advantage of going to Michigan (despite my hatred for them) and A. Attempt to get a graduate degree from there and B. To make it to the next level. To do what he does against MAC competition, whoop-dee-doo. If he does that against Big Ten competition=$$$. For those who think otherwise need to wake up and smell the coffee, because perception and reality here aren't far off and if you think this kid could have done that from Athens by playing the bigger boys, again delusional. So congrats to Jaaron, and hopefully he represents what transfers can gain from coming here. And yes, this could potentially be a positive spin if you embrace transfers full-bore and make it a roster slot or 2 in the program. Otherwise, good riddance to this topic, let's get focusing on 2018.
I think the problem is that it's not a guarantee it's going to improve anything. We've had a number of players in the past (Jeremy Fears comes to mind) who have sought to improve their situation and it hasn't worked out. There is no guarantee that Jaaron even starts at Michigan. It's not like John Groce or Jim Christian leaving and even if it doesn't work out they've got a big bankroll to fall back on. If he goes to Michigan and finds the system doesn't fit him or someone takes his minutes then he's actually worse off. Ask Walt Offutt about his B10 experience. The only guarantee is it improves his odds at making the NCAA Tournament.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I second those who say this thread should wind down. However, I would prefer we applaud those who stick with the program because they believe it is the right thing to do. Just like those college football players who said they would never back out of a bowl game because it might hurt their NFL chances via an injury. I am glad I am not the only "Old School" person here.

It seems some here are mistaking the talents of Jaaron with those of LeBron. It seems some here who say we are "delusional" might want to rethink that word. I will say it for the umpteenth time, I wish Jaaron well and hope he makes the NBA, but he was hardly head and shoulders above MAC competition, let alone Big Ten or other power schools. Some of the same people here who laud our conference are now mocking the MAC? It does bring a smile to my face when someone who has never played/coached at the high school level and or beyond somehow knows more than those who did. Again, it has been an "interesting" discussion.

Finally, I will repeat myself (from other posts) and say that sometimes these things have a way of being a blessing in disguise because they motivate individuals and give other players a chance to step up. I look forward to the upcoming season with a secret hope of meeting Michigan in March and letting history repeat itself by dispatching them back to Ann Arbor!

+1 Some very good points here. Yes, I guess I have to admit I'm old school myself. Some on here would say I'm a charter member of the Old Zone, but there are a few on here who are my senior by several years.

Nothing like a chat board to give everyone an equal stage.

He spit on our Alma Mater and went to a school for 1 year. I guess it's fair play given he bailed on UH to come to Athens.

That said, my memory of us sending Michigan packing in Nashville far outweighs what this one player decides to do. It's the system that allows this to happen. Hell, look at Groce. Coaches do it so why not players?

It's all become somewhat of a joke. I rarely watch anything not OHIO. No interest these days. NCAA has already succeeded in dividing up schools with the same D-1 designation. What's next?

Stopped watching my beloved sport of baseball during the steroid era and follow my Dolphins less because of the every changing free agent moves and player antics off the field. I couldn't name the 10 starters next year for the Fish.

There is literally not a single person in this thread that thinks Simmons is an NBA player. You are arguing that point with nobody.

Why hasn't Michigan announced anything and Jaaron's Twitter still says Ohio? Waiting on final grades?

Also, if his heart isn't in Athens, then we don't need him. I'd rather have 12 Gavin Block's on a team. Hope this squad is ready to put in some serious work in this summer. Get agitated, Bobcats!
I'll 2nd that. We don't need anyone who doesn't want to be here.

Ummmm, or it sounds nothing like that. Not sure if you noticed but he did leave it. If he complained about Saul or some particulars about the University you might have a point.

One thing Jaaron has done is screwed up his legacy here. Not sure if that was important to him but I always thought it was one of the cooler perks of being an athlete at a school.

You can be mad that he left as a player, but don't say this was a slap in the face to the university. That is like saying someone that went to grad school after doing undergrad at OU is slapping OU in the face.

Simmons gave it his all for 3 years here. In those 3 years he did more for OU than I would guess anyone on this board. He got his degree as well, was never in trouble. What more could you ask for? Sure it sucks from an on court perspective, but it is a good opportunity for someone who has given a lot to OU.

Classic case of old greedy grumpy people.

Do I have this correct - Simmons got two years education paid for at shool #1 to actually play one year - then qualified to get another year of graduate school paid for by the school he transferred to by doing that? In other words school #2 gets the same one year of him eligible on the court for half the price/cost/investment/support whatever you want to call it?

The first part happens all the time in football - five years of schooling gets paid and only four on the field.

And I assume summer school almost every year as well. Which if you add them up, means +/- another extra year compared to those of us that used the Summers to go home to work.

The summers and extra years are filled with practice and other mandatory team-related activities for redshirts. Those who are injured are typically following strict rehab regimens. The only difference is they don't dress for home games and don't travel to road games. In my opinion, the academic support is warranted for those participants.

and by the way...

NCAA rules were changed a few years ago to allow coaches to work with their teams during the summer, and most players are now on campus taking classes and working out.

Wait a minute. Taking classes? So it now becomes easier for players who aren't transfers to earn the credits they need to graduate in three years and still have a fourth year of eligibility, with an opportunity to take advantage of grad transfer rules.

I look at our roster, and now I am very concerned about a particular sophomore to be. After the events of the past two weeks, I'll bet every underclassman, their families and "advisors" are looking at their options. You'd be a fool not to after what your leader, the guy the coach called the "alpha dog" did...

New reality in college basketball. I would guess that it would be pretty hard for an athlete to graduate in 3 years including summer classes, but I may be wrong. How many students in general do that?

funny, true story:

I entered Ohio in Fall '69, my sister one year later. Flash forward to June, '73 and it's commencement time. My folks drive down to see my graduate, and I did it in the prescribed 4 years. The night before commencement, we all have dinner together. My parents ask my sister where she plans on sitting. She says she'll be down on the floor of the convo. On the floor?, my mom asks. "I thought that's where the people graduating were sitting." My sister: "That's right. I'm graduating too."

She did it while taking only 1 session of summer school.

I know the demands athletics place on kids. But I also know that most incoming freshmen basketball players are on campus, taking classes, in the summer before their freshman year begins, so they're off to a head start. If you really want to, you can get it done in three years.
