I will say this: Schaus is very smart in regards to coaching searches for basketball. I will say his searches have always been quick and targeted with reason. Watching this Ohio State search unfold makes me intrigued how Schaus would handle a football search after killin' it by getting Saul.
I think you got a friend on the left coast wondering the same thing. ;)
I'm in the camp we need a coaching change on the football front. Some guys are Doug Collins, where they get to a level but can't make the next jump. To me that's what Solich is. Not a knock, just a fact.
That said, look at who Schaus has hired in his time here in a few sports and consider how well he's done:
Basketball-John Groce, Jim Christian, Saul Phillips. Been to the NCAA 2 times including a Sweet 16 appearance.
Baseball-Rob Smith: 2 MAC Titles-keep in mind this is as many as the "great" Joe Carbone in only 5 years.
Women's Basketball: Semeka Randall, Bob Bolden. I admit, the first one I want to wash away like a Clinton or Trump would try to do. The 2nd though, whole other story with his MAC Regular Season titles and an NCAA Appearance and hopefully a couple more here.
On this list, the real dud was Randall, but again not in a revenue sport. There's always one question I ask when forced to make a coaching change or personnel change in any organization: If I get rid of person X, can I do better with person Y? If the answer is yes, you pull the trigger. If you don't, maintain and see what you can do to make the current situation better. That said, Ohio State cannot afford to strike out here.
