I will say this: Schaus is very smart in regards to coaching searches for basketball. I will say his searches have always been quick and targeted with reason. Watching this Ohio State search unfold makes me intrigued how Schaus would handle a football search after killin' it by getting Saul.

I'm in the camp we need a coaching change on the football front. Some guys are Doug Collins, where they get to a level but can't make the next jump. To me that's what Solich is. Not a knock, just a fact.

That said, look at who Schaus has hired in his time here in a few sports and consider how well he's done:

Basketball-John Groce, Jim Christian, Saul Phillips. Been to the NCAA 2 times including a Sweet 16 appearance.

Baseball-Rob Smith: 2 MAC Titles-keep in mind this is as many as the "great" Joe Carbone in only 5 years.

Women's Basketball: Semeka Randall, Bob Bolden. I admit, the first one I want to wash away like a Clinton or Trump would try to do. The 2nd though, whole other story with his MAC Regular Season titles and an NCAA Appearance and hopefully a couple more here.

On this list, the real dud was Randall, but again not in a revenue sport. There's always one question I ask when forced to make a coaching change or personnel change in any organization: If I get rid of person X, can I do better with person Y? If the answer is yes, you pull the trigger. If you don't, maintain and see what you can do to make the current situation better. That said, Ohio State cannot afford to strike out here.

You didn't even mention Volleyball, where good hires have kept the tradition of winning at a high level. And haven't the field hockey and soccer programs also been doing well?

It very well might be, but I have to imagine his salary and those of his assistants will be much higher at Ohio State.

Edit: RP beat me by 30 seconds :)

Honestly think that was a very good hire considering the desperation coming out of Columbus. That said, this should have been the call to make prior to McDermott.

I am not sure tO$U is a better job but this is a pretty good synopsis.

http://www.elevenwarriors.com/ohio-state-basketball/2017/...

Ironic that it is on a site called 11 warriors .

At Butler ...basketball will always be king and Indy, Indiana and the state all know Tony Hinkle,Barry Collier, Lickliter, Stevens, Matta and all the players and coaches who have been there and at IU/PU over the years. For them life is good. Seems to me that the University, the city and the state embraced Chris and the move to the Big East was a winner for him. With roots at very christian Taylor and a wife whose father was the head of the U and his P's in Lexington it would have seemed the marriage with the private parochial that became and Big East Power should have been a lifetime relationship.

Leaving for a U where football will always be king seems a step down. Maybe the money is better, maybe the facilities are better, maybe the perks are better....but I think it will be hard to see that life is better or the resonance of community and all that comes with the "Butler Way" could be much better.

When Matta came and JG recruited Oden, Conley and several others I was standing in Huber Heights talking to a stranger (walmart alum) with red and grey Nikes, a cellphone with the Sloopy ringtone and Red over grey Dodge truck and tald him "congrats on getting 2 of the best out of Indy"....he asked if they were offense or defense and were they linemen or position players? I said they were basketball players at which point he lectured me about how no one in Ohio cared about basketball and how I should mind my own business and talk about things that mattered. I think the article shows that Matta made some inroads. Matta's downfall came when he lost his recruiter as those initial teams set the tone and no one has been able to get the Odens/Cooks/Conleys/Koufos/Mullins/Deiblers to out on the floor since them.

Good luck my friend. You have done well. Life in the shadow A&M football should be interesting. The Butler fanbase is crushed ( https://butlerhoops.com/forum/index.php?threads/who-will-... )and the way it transpired.... that is a bridge burned. They should not blame you as tO$U did the same thing to Butler as they did to OHIO with volleyball when they took Geoff ...wait too late in the game and then throw money at the problem. I know you will do well and continue to recruit In and Ky the way you did when you were at OHIO...my only lament is that when that happens...as it did with Oden.Conley, Deshawn...I am going to have to see a lot more wal mart alums here in IN ....and that sucks.

Borna, I completely agree with you. Butler didn't disclose his salary, but it had to be around 1M a year. Pretty nice with all the things you mentioned and quality of life. And it's not as if you can't contend for a national title, because you can. But it's hard to turn down the coin and the lure of a bigger situation.

I'm not sure, yes OSU is a basketball school, but they have had lots of basketball success.

11 Final Fours, 1 Title, 3 runner ups. In past 18 years three trips to the Final Four.

In 20 years they have been a #1 seed twice, a number two seed three times, and a #3 once. Go back another 10 years and they have been a #1 seed five times.

And in 10 years they have 5 Sweet Sixteen runs in the tournament. Those are all numbers that Butler cannot duplicate.

Then throw the resources in that OSU has at it's disposal, and the salary, this is a good move for a coach who believes in himself.

And in my area it's not the OSU basketball fans who are wal-mart fans, but rather the UK basketball fans.

I thought about this on the motorcycle this am and came back to add a thought. You beat me to it. I was born in 57. Some of my earliest memories were sitting with my Pops watching Cincy and State. Coaching at Wayne HS he was pretty familiar with many of the tO$U players and followed them as they moved on to college. I am well aware of State's history and that is part of the reason I scoff when someone says hoops are legit.

How many State fans actually know they won the NCAA? HOw many actually know prior to the Indiana undefeated team State actually was the previous perfect team? They have been at the pinnacle but like UK that had Bear Bryant as a head coach...and Blanton Collier while my Pops was down there competing UK football has always been Number 2. State is the same way....they could win the NCAA in Volley, Base, Soft and any other kind of ball but NOTHING there will ever get a hundreth maybe a thousandth of the recognition that a BAD football year would get. Basketball was at the pinnacle and Woody kept them in their place the same way Rupp did to football at UK.

I agree, but isn't the goal being at a place that can get you there and a chance to win it. You can do that at OSU, and do it consistently, not sure you can just anywhere.

Definitely one of those alums when I was in school the basketball program pound for pound was just as good as football. I remember when basketball tickets for students was going for more than the football tickets on resale market. Something that you couldn't say everyday.

Curious question/thought, related to the Holtmann hiring. At Ohio State, they have what appears to be only 9 players on scholarship. Even though the spring signing period has closed, they can add people if they have scholarships (assuming here) because they have four to give. I know JC's staff did this with Khari Harley. I guess I'm trying to understand the point of having a designated period if eligible, unsigned players can sign after the so-called deadline?

If they are out of school, they can sign after the date, just not before the date.
